Mari represents a new beginning for Shinji away from his previous life. It's heavily hinted their relationship might become romantic but the ending is open enough You can interpret it as you like

3.0 + 1.0 was pretty light on the romance side. There's a good chance Shinji and Mari will end up together but you can interpret it differently if you wish so and probably it's intended to be a bit ambiguous

I loved it. The village part was great as was the second part of the movie and it was great that everybody got a happy ending. Only complaint is that I fell like the characters weren't fully fleshed out with the exception of Shinji and Gendo.

There is a strong implication Shinji ends up with Mari but it could be interpreted as platonic. I don't think any possible romantic relationship among the pilots will ever be made explicitly canonical. And with all the chaos in the fandom that would have happened if Shinji ended up with either Asuka...

That's an issue I take with it, it doesn't say to accept someone as they are or that people can learn and can change, it says that in order for the character to be happy you have to divide her up to make her more palpable, that the only way for Shinji to say I like/love you is if she isn...

Does Shinji remembers the others in the end or forgets everything like in the manga?

NTE is very Shinji-centric reflecting Anno's priorities and this is both a strong point and a weakness in that I always have the sensation the other characterd are not fully developed or fleshed out. I think a tv series might have worked better than a movie series

I think a Mana Kirishima-esque character would have been better than Mari because the age difference would not have been a problem and thematically it works just as well
