An alternate Japanese cast for Evangelion

Given how eclectic the English dub cast of Evangelion has been, let's apply that same treatment to the Japanese cast (NOTE: no reprisals, not even having the OG VAs appear in a different role). Shinji Ikari - Ayumu Murase Rei Ayanami, Yui Ikari - Ai Kayano Asuka Langley - Haruka Tomatsu Touji Suzuha...

Maybe omae baka would be most appropriate, though I wouldn't rule out temee baka or kisama baka post-arael

Re: What if Asuka said "Omae baka" or "Temee baka" or "Kisama baka"?

I mean we see Asuka spend every opportunity belittle, mistreat, and insulting Shinji Even if so, remember she's been openly instructed by Misato when in Rome, do like Romans do . Maybe she's trying to be polite, after all. As I said earlier, maybe when she's just straight-up lost it after th...

Re: What if Asuka said "Omae baka" or "Temee baka" or "Kisama baka"?

I see. Thanks! But I think you bastard would match Asuka's state of mind only towards the ending of 3.33. Eg. she could shout Shut up and die, bastard Shinji! when fighting him in - I don't remember, Terminal Dogma? But till then, baka Shinji was wired way too strong in her brain, so to say. So &qu...

Re: What if Asuka said "Omae baka" or "Temee baka" or "Kisama baka"?

Being not a Japanese fluent person in any way, I feel lost. What's the difference between those pronouns? Japanese has a variety of pronouns that reflect a speaker's gender, age, social status, relationship with the addressee, and how the speaker wants to present themselves. In the case of second-p...

Re: What if Asuka said "Omae baka" or "Temee baka" or "Kisama baka"?

And Asuka adding a more offensive connotation would miss the point of her character, specially after episode 9 It would actually be in character for her to at least use "Omae baka?" (お前バカァ?) towards Shinji though "Temee baka?" (てめぇバカァ?) or "Kisama baka?" (貴様バカァ?) would...

What if Asuka said "Omae baka" or "Temee baka" or "Kisama baka"?

We all know Asuka's catchphrase "Anta baka?" (あんたバカァ?) but I think it would be more in character for her if she said "Omae baka?" (お前バカァ?) or "Temee baka?" (てめぇバカァ?) or "Kisama baka?" (貴様バカァ?) instead.

The Miami accent is perfect! I can totally see him playing basketball on the beaches of Florida :shifty: I think he is weird enough to be a Florida man lol! I think the Florida Man matches much closer to the "Idiot from Osaka" trope than the usual dumb country yokel that's used for such c...

Re: What accent should Touji Suzuhara speak if he ever had one in the English for his Osaka accent?

If we're going with "The Idiot from Osaka" trope as a basis then I think a British chav accent could translate well. You still get chavs in rural areas. A rough working-class Bristolian, Swindon or broadly Southwest Country accent maybe? A mix between country and street. I would have used...

Re: What accent should Touji Suzuhara speak if he ever had one in the English for his Osaka accent?

Well, that makes sense considering it's the suit Shinji wore while in Village-3 in Shin (it's a very rural and poor place, of course). Toji never struck me as a particular rich guy, especially if you consider what he had for lunch... But then again, the basketball thing and his cap also really help...

Re: What accent should Touji Suzuhara speak if he ever had one in the English for his Osaka accent?

Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing it with me. I think a New Yorker accent is actually perfect for him. It has nothing to do with Osaka, sure. But Toji's character really gives off that street vibe. Both because of the way he acts and his tracksuit... OTOH, in Japanese society, a tracksuit ...

That was a manga-only thing.

Meanwhile in one of the subs (I think it was either the first or second rebuilds).

What accent should Touji Suzuhara speak if he ever had one in the English for his Osaka accent?

AFAIK, none of the English dubs of Evangelion ever adapted Touji's Kansai accent, but what if they did? The choices New Yorker/Brooklynite (the Viz release went in this route) Southern Redneck British Chav Australian Bogan Northern British like Scouse (i.e. Liverpool) and Geordie (aka Newcastle or T...

Re: Shin Eva - Official Social Media

lmao While "Bye-Bye all of Evangelion" is kinda wonky, it is very faithful to the Japanese original. I suspect Dan Kanematsu was once again on translation-duty - this lack of feel for the English language is kind of his style. He is. What other translator would Anno use but him? Though I ...

Re: Stuff that you would like to see in Evangelion 3.0+1.0

This would be a bit farfetched but I'd like to see Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart (https://youtu.be/0IV7GapuKnw), or at the very least a Japanese-language cover of it be used for the climax (perhaps get Nana Mizuki to sing it).

Re: Does Rei Ayanami have schizophrenia?

Rei's behaviour is a bi-product of her upbringing I believe. If Anno wished to make her schizophrenic, then it seems it remained a concept and nothing more. That was his original intent except he didn't know how to write a schizophrenic character properly. Most likely Rei would have hallucinated a ...

I heard Rei more likely has Schizoid Personality Disorder.
