Actually, eins (with an "s" at the end) is "one". "Ein" is an indefinite article ("a"/"an"), preceding masculine or neuter nouns (as opposed to "eine", which precedes the feminine).

Ah I see. It's just two different words that mean relatively the same thing, such as "stupid" and "idiot" are two different words that share similar meanings. It's just how he chose to translate it.

I have run those words through a couple of translation programs and they came out the same as they came in.
