I guess it's been a pretty long time since I posted something and it kind of feels like the website is becoming dead day by day.
So this will be a good chance to get some liveliness back.

This is my drafts about the topic you read in subject that i made like months ago which I wanted to post but didn't.
I am letting loose ends in, eitherway me months ago had more knowledge than I have now.

Here we go

Why doesn't Shinji understand Asuka, but Asuka understands Shinji (of course, not perfectly)? This question has been bothering me. When comparing their interactions, both reach out to each other on a similar level.

Now please take this as more of a question than discussion.Because I wanted to post this to clear my doubts.Like I want your views.

So you can also ignore what I wrote down and give your direct ideas if you want and take whatever I wrote down as just a subjective view.(Either way I have to use Ai as english is not my primary language. So it can shorten my points too much).

While Asuka initiates more "reach outs," they are often aggressive but compared her Shinji opens himself more.
.
From Asuka's side:
In episode 9, the synchronization symbolizes Shinji reaching Asuka's emotional level. Asuka reciprocates but less significantly.
After Leliel's incident(ep 16), she visits Shinji, acknowledging her partial responsibility for his reckless actions. This demonstrates emotional mirroring.
In episode 18, her empathy is evident: "I wonder what he's dreaming.".As Shinji was admitted to the hospital after the bardiel incident. So she was actively empathising with him.And was interacting with Rei.

Her attempts to sexually attract Shinji till ep 10 were primarily for self-validation, but also represent an intellectual pursuit of connection.

The kiss in episode 15 is multifaceted:  processing Kaji's relationship with Misato, expressing her feelings for Shinji, testing him, and seeking self-validation. Overall, it's an emotional outreach.

However, Asuka's aggressiveness hinders Shinji's understanding of her. For example, in episode 17, the radio reveals her anger, yet she hides it from Shinji while talking to him about Kaji and who will be the new pilot and only expressing it through verbal attacks when he doesn't bring her bento,Meaning she doesn't show her anger in a meaning full way that will give Shinji a clearer clue about her mentality.  Her introspection in episode 22 reveals her desire for connection, but her anger pushes Shinji away.

Shinji's attempts to understand Asuka:
In episode 12, he asks, "Why do you pilot Eva?" demonstrating an emotional and intellectual outreach, prompted by her anger over his synchronization rates. As he was watching for her reaction, meaning he was trying to understand her more than himself.

He reaches her emotional level in episode 9 by lowering himself to her level.

He repeatedly expresses concern for her safety multiple times throught the whole series, showing empathy.(Note: he is too passive but there are exceptions).

In episode 16, he asks, "Why do you look down?" after recognizing his mistake with the kiss. This demonstrates emotional mirroring. Now why this simple asking about her down mood matters.Because when Asuka gargles loudly after the kiss ,We see Shinji's head recoiling due that large noise while watching bathroom, meaning he knew he did something worng. Now his query about it came at the time he thought correct as “You look down, what happened”.
He tries comfort Asuka in Episode 22 despite her verbal rejection and despite his own emotional deterioration and expectation of getting harsh rejection. This matters because, for Shinji, approaching another person is never emotionally neutral-it is a risk. Throughout the series he consistently avoids confrontation, hesitates to impose himself on others, fears rejection, and withdraws after negative responses. Yet here he chooses to cross those fears and reach out anyway. That single act is therefore more meaningful than it first appears: it represents Shinji acting against his habitual avoidant pattern. He knows Asuka may reject him-as she often has-yet he still attempts to comfort her. For someone whose instinct is to retreat whenever intimacy becomes painful, even this quiet attempt is a significant expression of concern rather than a trivial gesture.
In episode
However, Shinji's limited understanding is evident in episode 24 when he inadvertently hurts Asuka by revealing Kaji's death.

Both characters reach out, but their efforts are often flawed.  So why does Asuka seem to understand Shinji better?

Possible explanations:
1. a) Asuka's understanding of Shinji is more intellectual than emotional, as she fails to recognize the negative impact of her aggression.
b) Asuka is more observant. She notices Shinji trying to kiss her in episode 9, leading to her kiss in episode 15. Her conversation with Hikari in episode 18 about Shinji being naive and a stooge hints at a deeper understanding of his sexual inexperience.
c) Asuka initiates contact more frequently, prompting more reactions from Shinji.
d) Key information about Shinji is often revealed accidentally or by himself by his own will: his attempted kiss, his reasons for piloting and playing cello. his paralysis in episode 18.
E). Her dialogues in episode 18.
Asuka (OFF):“…it may be hopeless for him.”
Asuka:“That idiot surely won’t be able to recover from this.”
Asuka:“About now he should be dreaming.”

This one of the phew time when Asuka rarely shows her curiosity towards Shinji and empathise with him actively.
Who knows she might think about him all day.

I wonder if Shinji also thinks about her often. Though episode 23' when he standing is outside door of Asuka's room, The next dialogue when he is outside midato's door suggests that he is wants to help both Asuka and Misato but is devoid of methods and is too afraid to help.
This can hint towards him thinking about her time to time.

2. a) Asuka's defense mechanisms, like misguiding Shinji after the kiss and in episode 9 ("Don't breach this wall of Jericho"), confuse him and hinder his understanding.my previous episode 17 example. And offcourse kiss scene.
b) Her anger pushes Shinji away, validating his fear of rejection.
3. Shinji's passivity: While he attempts to navigate the ambiguity, his efforts are insufficient. He doesn't actively seek reactions from Asuka or attempt to break down her defenses, waiting for her to reveal everything. This passivity contributes to her haughty behavior. He wants Asuka to open herself. He wants her to navigate ambiguity which is also what Asuka wants from Shinji.Shinji wants to understand her but that said si too afraid to induce a reaction.Thats selfish.(Though i don't blame him much for this as Asuka is also in part agressive to his tries to be friend with her.)
Simply he rarely pursues understanding once it becomes emotionally risky.

4. A toxic loop: Asuka's aggressive outreach (the kiss) combined with Shinji's passivity creates a cycle of rejection, aggression, and further passivity.
Like Asuka reach out Shinji(Kiss). But in process she pinches his nose and forces him to breath through her mouth(Dominance)(dehumanisation of Shinji by ignoring his needs). In inturn Shinji remains passive as he doesn't know how to react to her advances(In turn rejecting her needs unintentionally). She increased the duration in turn(Increasing intensity of aggressiveness which chockes Shinji more),Shinji finally snaps back to take breath(He is pushed away).Asuka si hurted.Shinji tries understand what happened. She lies and misguides him.And Shinji never did anything than that to understand what made her hate him.He tookd her words on face value.

5. a) Shinji's internal focus on his trauma and desire for acceptance limits his capacity for empathy.
b) His emotional immaturity and lack of experience hinder his ability to understand Asuka's complex trauma.
c) His fear of rejection and confrontation (avoidant personality disorder tendencies) prevents him from actively exploring Asuka's emotions.

So my current impression is that Asuka appears to understand Shinji better because she is more observant, while Shinji genuinely wants to understand Asuka but is too passive and intimidated by her defenses to pursue that understanding. Do you think that's the right way to read their relationship, or am I overlooking something important?

Edit: let's add another pre planned point.Amd I think it is imp.

6).a). Asuka's haughty nature is the biggest barrier for Shinji after his own .Shinji's avoidant tendencies likely make him reluctant to pursue conflict or repeatedly challenge Asuka's defensive behavior, which contributes to his difficulty understanding her.(Some fan diagnosis suggests Shinji might be AvPD)

Shinji opens himself more and validates Rei in comparison to Asuka. He tells Rei about how he felt motherly vibes from her in episode 17.Now purpose was not tell how he felt about Rei but rather to connect.Meanimg Shinji feels more safe in company of Rei to make such personal remark.Though he laughed clumsily and watches Rei meaning he understood that he may have given Rei a wrong idea by that. And offcourse talking with Rei in episode 22 and seeming happy. In comparison to Asuka where talks are not much opened up like he does with Rei.Even during comforting her in episode 22', we can see he is clearly uncomfortable, meaning he mostly knew what will happen and was kind of seeking approval from Asuka to help her.Which means by view of this point, both are at fault.

b). Asuka's rejective personality:- Asuka strictly bans pitty by Shinji after his own biggest barriers(he is being sympathetic or empathetic).Shinji often expresses care through quiet concern, apologizing, or offering sympathy.Asuka often experiences those same gestures as reminders of her own inadequacy.A person who understands Shinji will also know that showing sympathy is actually baby steps towards closeness by person like Shinji which Asuka rejects.Through way of putting dialogues “I am dead if I get sympathy from you ” where here sympathy has some altered meaning,And Shinji's dialogue with Asuka where we get vision of Asuka rejecting Shinji throughout the series in organge colour palette(meaning pissed off) in eoe “You don't tell me anything, you don't open up to me,how I am supposed to understand you Asuka” might suggest she rejects his sympathy pretty often-offscreen.

Now what Shinji is pissed about Asuka is not only opening up.But also importantly how she rejects him.For example.

Shinji isn't hurt from constant banters like “idiot” “stooge” “ pervert”etc. What actually hurts Shinji is her rejections is mostly irrational from POV of Shinji. For example in episode 12,she rejects Shinji frequently(through way of putting dialogues) whenever Shinji's sync rate goes up.Now this actually made Shinji feels like “...dumped by a girl...”And lower mood prompting romantically hurted by radio.

And those rejections should psychologically *demotivate* Shinji to pursue more like he does in case of Rei even if less. And this supports my previous point.

So I guess now
,since I now justified both characters on pretty much equal parts.

I guess these are enough

The biggest problem with Shinji is his inability to read between the lines; he takes everything at face value. He actually believes Asuka wants him to stay away from her in the Wall of Jerico scene. He does not realize she's actually encouraging him to make the wall fall down. In the ep. 15 kiss scene, he actually believes she's just bored; it doesn't occur to him that she actually wants to kiss him. Shinji's the type of guy who should have been approached plainy and directly. I remember in one of the instrumentality or instrumentality style scenes he accuses Asuka, Rei, and Misato of always keeping things ambiguous.

Negative! Primative! Limited! I let you live.
But I gave you life.
What else could you do?
To do what was right.
I'm perfect, are you?
