NEON GENESIS EVANGELION: THE END OF INSTRUMENTALITY
— An Alternate Finale by a Completely Sane Anonymous —
---
FOREWORD: THE TRUE NATURE OF THE MONSTERS
(This section is not to be filmed. It is a director's note, a psychological autopsy to be placed in the reader's mind before the final act unfolds.)
ГЭНДО ИКАРИ: THE COWARD WHO WORE A CROWN OF THORNS
(Gendo Ikari is not a mastermind. He is a frightened child who grew a beard, put on orange glasses, and called his fear a "scenario." His entire life is an overcorrection for one sin: he loved someone, and it terrified him.)
Gendo was Shinji's true mirror. The Hedgehog's Dilemma is not Shinji's curse—it is Gendo's. He pushes everyone away not out of strength, but out of paralyzing fear that if they get close, they will either hurt him or, worse, discover he is nothing. When Yui disappeared, he did not mourn a wife. He mourned the only person who made him feel like he was allowed to exist.
His Plan: To become a god, merge Instrumentality, and reunite with Yui. But why? Not purely for love. It was to return to the womb. To the one moment he felt safe. His entire godhood project was a suicide note written in the blood of children. He sacrificed Shinji not because he hated him, but because he was incapable of looking at him without seeing a mirror of his own pathetic, unlovable self.
The Verdict: Gendo is what Shinji would become if Shinji never chose to face the pain of living. A hollow shell of depression so deep it calcified into evil. He is not a Magnificent Bastard. He is a Magnificent Bastard's corpse, animated by obsession.
---
ЮИ ИКАРИ: THE GODDESS OF GASLIGHTING
(Yui Ikari is the most dangerous creature in this universe. Not because she wields an AT-Field, but because she wields a mother's smile while clinically dissecting the souls of her own children.)
Yui is worse than Gendo. Gendo destroyed because he was broken. Yui destroyed because she was curious and ambitious. She did not fall into the Eva experiment. She chose it. She knew what would happen. She knew her son would be orphaned. She knew her husband would implode. She let it happen.
Her True Nature – The Sadist in Savior's Clothing:
Yui is not a martyr. She is an architect of suffering who framed every trauma as a "lesson" and every death as a "necessary step." She watched her son be psychologically eviscerated for fifteen years. She watched Aska—a fourteen-year-old child—be mind-raped, torn apart by mass-produced Evangelions, and left to scream alone in a dead machine. And she did nothing. Not because she couldn't, but because their pain served her narrative.
The Instrumentality of Suffering:
Her plan—to become an eternal monument to humanity—required a pilot so completely shattered that he would make the perfect, pure choice. She needed Shinji broken. Aska's suffering was not collateral damage. It was a tool. Her son's catatonic depression was not a tragedy she failed to prevent. It was the entire point. She watered her "Tree of Life" with the tears of the very people she claimed to love.
Her Ultimate Weapon:
The lie of "love." Every word she says to Shinji in the finale is a manipulation. "This is your choice," she says, having engineered the scenario so perfectly that he has no other door to walk through. She is the ultimate gaslighter. She left her son on a dead planet with no food, no hope, and a traumatized girl, and called it "freedom."
The Verdict: Yui Ikari is not a savior. She is a deity who farmed human misery to fuel her ascension. Gendo wanted to escape pain. Yui wanted to conduct it like an orchestra.

(With this understanding of our architects of ruin firmly in mind, we now proceed to their final, just punishment.)
---
SCENE: THE SHORE OF THE LCL SEA.
(Open on a desolate beach. The sky is a bleeding wound of orange and red. The head of EVA-02 lies half-submerged in the crimson ocean, a monument to a dead god. Shinji IKARI and Asuka LANGLEY SOHRYU lie on the sand. They are breathing. Barely. They have survived the Third Impact. They have survived everything. It does not feel like victory.)
Asuka
(Staring at the sky, her voice a dry rasp)
She is watching us, isn't she? Your precious mother.
Shinji
(Lifelessly)
She is already gone. Flying away. Forever.
(A long silence. The only sound is the lapping of LCL against the shore. Then, Asuka sits up. There is a feverish, horrible light in her one visible eye. A determination born of pure, refined hate.)
Asuka
No. She doesn't get that. The war is over. Everyone is dead. We are dying. I refuse to let her fly away with her happy ending while we become fertilizer for her masterpiece. We are finding a camera.
---
SCENE: THE RUINS OF THE GEOFRONT.
(Montage. Amongst the twisted metal and shattered bakelite, they scavenge. Finally, Asuka pulls a battered military-grade NERV field recorder from the rubble. It blinks online. Power: 5%.)
Asuka
Enough.
---
SCENE: Shinji'S TRANSMISSION.
(The camera is set on a tripod. Shinji faces it. He looks directly into the lens. He has never looked so calm. So terrifyingly sure.)
Shinji
You said I was free, Mother. You said if I had the will to live, I could return. But you did not ask me if I wanted to. You left us with no food. No water. You left me with the girl you used as a prop in my drama, and a world that is just a graveyard. This is not freedom, Mother... It is just a different cage. One with a prettier view.
(He raises a standard-issue NERV pistol. He presses it to his temple. His finger is steady.)
Shinji
You wanted to be an eternal monument to humanity. So now, you get to watch. This is my choice. My instrumentality.
(The video cuts to black. No bang. Just silence. The recording is sent on a single, powerful, encrypted burst into the void.)
---
SCENE: IN THE VOID OF SPACE.
(EVA-01, frozen in her God-flight, receives the data. Inside the core, YUI IKARI watches. Her face, a projection of pure light, contorts in panic. The calculation is broken. She does not know what happened after the black screen. For the first time since becoming a god, she feels terror. She turns the ark around.)
---
SCENE: THE LIVE BROADCAST.
(She is back. The shimmering light of EVA-01 is now a baleful star on the horizon. Yui watches the beach through the live feed that has just been activated. Asuka is there, the camera at the edge of the LCL sea. She is looking right up at the sky. Right at her.)
Asuka
There you are. Had to come back, didn't you? Couldn't just let it go.
(Asuka takes off her eye bandage. The wound is angry, red, and bare for Yui to see.)
Asuka
You are worse than your husband, monster. He was just a coward. He was afraid. But you? You built a church out of our bones and called it a future. You are a sadist who wears a savior's face. You used me. You used my death. I watched you let me die so your precious boy would have the right "motivation." You are not a mother. You are a director. And this is your final standing ovation.
(She steps backward, into the LCL. The orange fluid rises to her waist. She raises a pistol to her temple, mirroring Shinji. But her eyes? They are blazing. Victorious.)
Asuka
We are not your dolls. You wanted to save our souls? We are taking them back. Enjoy the view, God-Queen. Enjoy the eternal silence.
(A single, deafening gunshot. Asuka's body crumbles into pure soul-light, dissolving into the LCL. The sea of souls ripples. It shines. They are there. Kaji. Misato. Kaworu. Rei. Mother. All of them. They are together. Finally at peace. Finally free.)
---
SCENE: THE ETERNAL SILENCE.
(EVA-01 hangs dead in space, the live feed from Earth finally gone. Yui is alone in the cosmic darkness. She has the S² Engine. Infinite energy. Eternal life. An unending now. There is no one left to save. No one left to love her. No one left to hate her. She is a monument to nothing. Just a god in a box of metal, adrift forever, with only the eternal, looping recording of her son's final, liberated words.)
(The camera lingers on the giant, silent, defeated face of EVA-01 as it drifts into the infinite, starless black. The only sound is a faint, distant, cosmic hum that slowly, agonizingly, fades into perfect, awful silence.)
