Without any doubt, I am able to say that Hideaki Anno was really careful while choosing topics that are justifiable in a physical sense for events happening throughout the entire series. The Dirac sea for leliel and the order saying “break down its atoms in the quark level” during the katsuragi expedition can be given as examples.

There is one concept however, which we know little to none about how it works:
AT Fields. In this text, I will mention the clues that can explain how AT Fields work and accurately state what an AT Field actually is. I believe that this will bring a new understanding to the lore of neon genesis evangelion.

There are four fundamental forces in physics and each force has its own force carrier particle in the standard model. Graviton for gravity, photon for electromagnetism, W+, W-, Z bosons for weak nuclear force and finally, gluon is the force carrier of strong nuclear force. In certain contexts, these forces can be referred to as “fields” (such as the gravitational field or a magnetic field). I propose the idea that an AT Field is either the fifth hypothetical force/field in physics or the “unified field” according to the Unified Field Theory (UFT) , with “seele” (in German, soul) being the force carrier of this hypothetical field in the evangelion universe.

We already know that EVA’s rely on a “soul” in order to form their AT Fields. Another evidence for this theory comes from the power comparison of angels. We know that Tabris (Kaworu), Ramiel, and Arael (by estimation) have the strongest AT Fields. This may be primarily caused by the strength of the souls that they carry inside, it is known that Kaworu carries the soul of Adam which must be one of the strongest souls in the evangelion universe. By the definition above, it is likely that the amount of “seele” particles in a body determines the strength of its soul and thus, directly shapes the strength of its AT Field. In electromagnetism for example, the number of photons is positively correlated to the field strength. According to the evidence above, it is likely that “AT Field Theory” is the most accurate explanation of AT Fields.
