So I haven’t read the full article, or may not remember it entirely, but he mentioned that Japanese anime shouldn’t be catering towards western audiences, and that Japanese anime must stay Japanese.
I mean, that’s what made anime unique in the first place compared to other animation. If it’s made in Japan, then it’s anime.
And about how western audiences must adapt to the Japanese culture regarding anime, isn’t that what we’re kind of doing for a long time now? I think it’s fair to say that many anime gave us a glimpse of the Japanese culture, more or less.
Feel free to correct me if I missed anything.

Re: About Anno’s words, “Western audiences must adapt to us”.
It's pushback against a trend he has seen to try and take western or other foreign markets into account when *creating* series.
US films have definitely trended toward being created with a world audience in mind; I think it has made them worse and I suspect a similar trend is what he wants to stop or prevent.
This kind of mentality puts business ahead of art and culture. So I basically agree with him, even though I am not optimistic that he will get his way.
