As the title suggests; what are some theories regarding Eva that have been disproven, but you still kind of like?

One of my favourites is that the Eva Series use souls from Shinji's schoolmates. Does it make any sense at all? No. Is it deliciously grim and in-character for the series? Yes!

Asuka in the EoE beach being fused with Rei and Misato because of her supposed eye colour. It's so silly but so fun.

The MP Eva theory is something I believed for a long time but I have to say that a lot of people don't seem to realize why it was theorized (and thus stopping them from making that assumption themselves), since we know almost for a fact that all of Shinji's classmates lost their moms and their souls are kept in the Nerv soul bank somewhere.

I still think it's a tragedy that "Duel of the Seeds" was debunked.

Sometimes I wonder if you were meant to think Ritsuko might possibly be Gendo's daughter and not realize it. There's no real evidence for it though and probably would be too much anyways.

I think Keel being the wandering Jew is a cool idea. Most people want to live, but Keel wants to die.

Well, there's no evidence for this, but in one episode the Chamber of Guf is stated to be "empty," after the final soul was presumably given to Rei. The Chamber of Guf, of course, being the place in Jewish tradition from which all unborn souls are from - it's said that when this chamber is empty, the world will end or the Messiah will come (there are a few interpretations here). The takeaway and intention of this being, Rei probably has Lilith's soul. But, this has always made me wonder if kids in the rest of the world, born after Rei was, are... well, soulless? Which would be pretty dark. If they were soulless, could they even go through Instrumentality?

Imagine being a parent in the world of Eva, you go through this awful experience in which your physical walls are torn apart and you're forced to accept the flaws of other people if you wish to regain your corporeal form, then you come back, and your kid's been staring at a wall for a week eating dry cheerios out the box because YOU were a puddle of orange goop on the floor and turns out, they don't have a soul and couldn't join you! You'd have to put them in therapy for life. (Not to say anyone else who went through Instrumentality wouldn't need boatloads of therapy either...)

Something else I had out with a friend recently that there's no canon basis for. Humanity is the 18th Angel, right? On this, we can all agree. First Ancestral race, yada yada, Egg of Lilith, makes a bunch of guys. Cool! Something left unanswered, or at least I'm unsure of how to find an answer for (disclaimer: I may be stupid); did humans Evolve in the world of Eva? Or did they just sort of, show up one day when it was their time, just like the Angels do?

My friend's theory is that humans did evolve from apes, but were just always destined to turn out as the current human form. She postures this is because reproduction is a gift of the Fruit of Knowledge and not the Fruit of Life, so I'm inclined to agree that this is probably the case, but I did think it was a weird oversight. It would also be really funny if evolution just wasn't a thing in Eva.

Not sure if either of these count as 'debunked,' given that there's just not enough information given in canon for either. But I do certainly enjoy them

For me, Naoko Akagi being the soul in Unit 00. There's some decent dramatic AND comedic potential in the set up, exploring her angst after being used or her trying to kill Rei repeatedly.

I also genuinely don't think Misato's dad molested her the way a couple of users on Tumblr suggested, but something about cycles of abuse repeating themselves and Misato seeing her dad in the men in her life taking on a darker context is an interesting idea to me.

Mari being Shinji's daughter from the future. Not because I think it's a good theory or anything. But it's really funny.
