Anno revealed after a Yamato 50th anniversary screening that Studio Khara had received approval from rights holders Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation to produce a new Yamato anime film project.
This will be a different project from the ongoing remake series that started with Yamato 2199 in 2012, though Yutaka Izubuchi (2199's chief director who was present at the screening) will also be working on this new project with Anno.
Anno indicated that the staff aims to begin production in 2025 for theatrical release later.

Curious that they're doing this while 2199 continues to go on.
Hopefully its good, though I hope they don't try and compress entire original series into feature length or anything like that.

Although the project sounds interesting, I'm just kinda annoyed that Khara is rarely if ever embarking on an original IP.

Yeah closest was like...what? Dragon Dentist?
I'm looking forward to this take on Yamato but its also kinda hard to feel that Khara is a truly exciting studio anymore post-Rebuild.

Thats so bizarre. i havent really delved into studying Anno as a person, but you'd think a creative guy like him would be eager to start something new instead of working on other properties.

Re: Anno/Studio Khara's Space Battleship Yamato Movie
Anno is still primarily an otaku with otaku interests, which means for better or worse his heart is mostly with the IP work he grew up on. I think this has just become more prominent since the Shin movies took off in earnest with Godzilla.
I don't think this is inherently either good or bad, its not like good stuff can't be made within franchise framework or whatever, but it is does change the kind of artist I view Anno as to some degree.
