At least they had something resembling a relationship beforehand, Shinji and Mari makes about as much sense as Asuka and Kensuke, as in they're both forced and stupid.

I always thought the Rebuild were leaning more towards Rei Ayanami being the final goal. The first two movies definitely were. And I'm a bigger Asuka fan, but Rei makes more sense than a "character" like Mari who's just there to sell new merchandise.

But I guess I can convince myself that the relationship between Shinji and Mari at the end isn't necessarily romantic, and that she just represents change.

Well I guess you people are fool in this case.Nobody end with none.
Shinji gave Asuka a hope while he became kensuke's doll(I am not explaining and arguing that just read the best thread for it).Asuka realised that she was loved ,And remembers kensuke's affection,And accepted or realised the fact that she has a place to go(in short).

Shinji was left and couldn't save himself alone.So here Mari comes and completed her promise.

And for that train station scene.Its not what you think.There is no time reversal.Its minus space.According to rules of minus space only god's can live in minus space.Same happens here.Kowuru and Rei are literal god's so they can't be dissolved.And for that Asuka at train station.She is Asuka's orignal(don't bother) or the Asuka we got to see in left of the entry plug when our Our shikinami's dss chocker got activated in entry plug.

So Shinji and Mari left minus space through the train station.(And for there behaviour,They act like typical friend,only if you want..)

So it's not what you guys think.Choice is yours here.Pair Asuka with Shinji if you want or else.it will work.End is open End.

There is clearly a "goodbye" between them in Asuka's Instrumentality. Not to mention the Train Station where it seems Shinji goes in the opposite direction.

Well search what does GoodBye means in Thrice upon the time.It is repeated through the movie.
