Please don't *make fun* of others' theories, I only want to bring them up here and talk about them because they're neat and I find them amusing. "EVA is a puzzle", and everyone's created pieces will be different.

I always love seeing unique interpretations of Evangelion, especially when they make no sense or have no evidence to back them up. Post here your favorite fan theories that either make no sense, are COMPLETELY off the rails, or are blatantly wrong and can be debunked easily.

First one for me is "Can EVAs get fat?", which was posted on our very forum in the 2010s. I can't find it now [thanks broken forum search feature] but it's definitely an interesting one. The logic is that since Unit 01 ate part of Zeruel in NGE, and that Unit 13 ate the 12th Angel in Q, it's possible the organic bodies of Evangelions could gain weight in the form of fat. While I doubt this was ever actually considered by anyone at Gainax or Khara, it's certainly an entertaining thought to imagine Unit 01 with the proportions of Peter Griffin.

Next is ANOTHER one I can't find for the life of me, "Shinji is a vampire". I remember much less about this one but it's got something to do with how he gets dirt in his mouth after the N2 attack on Sachiel/The 4th Angel, and somehow dirt in the mouth relates to being a vampire. Wish I could find more on this one and the last one so I could credit the original posters, these are great.

Third is a sad one, Folding Ideas' completely incorrect interpretation of End of Evangelion https://youtu.be/NAMAwErYRpQ?si=Biw_WPzU8WfZ7aUW He goes with the nihilist interpretation of the story partially thanks to Manga Entertainment's incorrect translation for EoE. He sees Shinji as COMPLETELY broken, only wanting to return to reality so people will feel pain again [for edgy reasons, not for healthy reasons of "the good times mean nothing without the bad times"], and that he chokes Asuka in a GENUINE attempt to kill her. This one hurts me a lot because Manga Entertainment's shitty localization likely caused a TON of English speaking fans to come to these incorrect conclusions despite Shinji straight up stating that he wants to go back because "his feelings were real", the idea that the good times are WORTH the bad times. Obviously the ending scene doesn't really help get this message across but said message is heavily implied through the dialogue in Instrumentality.

What are your favorite "oh my God how did anyone come up with this" EVA theories and interpretations?
*injects Angel blood* I know what the fuck an EVA is now :)

That vid really takes me back, the pre-Netflix era of the fandom was quite different. I'm really quite glad most of the myths and negative views promulgated by ADV were cleared up by the re-localization, not to mention the work of people here on the forums.

One theory that I still think it's kinda funny, and also part of the actual *Manga commentary track, is the idea that Asuka at the EoE beach has been fused with Rei and Misato.

That one was based on the notion that Asuka's eyes were the wrong color in that scene; except they weren't. They were just reflecting the LCL.

BTW that was actually the Manga Home Video commentary. Unfortunately ADV didn't have EOE.

Sorry for the double post, but it's been a couple of weeks. I just remembered that my most hated crazy fan theory is "Keel is the Wandering Jew."

Since the murder of Kaji has always been a subject of debate, I always read interesting and creepy theories made up by fans. I can't remember where I read it, but some folks developed a theory explaining that Ritsuko was actually the murderer because she discovered Kaji, and she always saw Kaji with distrust because of his continuous ambiguity. Also, Ritsuko may have wondered about a possible betrayal by Misato since she was in deep love with him, etc.

Yeah, that was crazy and twisted to think about...

Shinji has been an unwitting pawn of the Big Shinji Conspiracy; a diabolical plan masterminded by his father to make him the centre of the entire plot, solely to make him and everyone around him that little bit more uncomfortable. Kensuke tried to warn him!

...Wait. That's just the plot of 3.0.

I don't remember where exactly I read it, but there was a theory that Kaworu was cloned from Misato's father. I don't think it really adds much to the series and there's no proof to substantiate it, but there's probably something dark you can do with that for a fic.

One of Reichu's pet ideas posted here in the early days of the forum (if not before, in the AnimeNation Eva subforum).

Perhaps these particular theories aren't "insane" but I don't know if I find them likey. At least one person I've come across on Tumblr suggested that Misato might have been molested by her father or Gendo raped Rei at some point during the series. Not that either would necessarily be out of place in Eva, but we've been inside the headspaces of these characters and there's no real suggestion of either having happened? Not trying to defend Gendo's honor since at the very least he's a groomer for how he had a relationship with Ritsuko shortly after her mother died and how he stares at Rei's naked body throughout the series, but I feel that the director who had Shinji masturbate to Asuka's comatose body would have made a character being a rapist a way more explicit part of the text.

There's no proof against it either. Seems to me the writers didn't really care either way, and left it open. I personally do like the idea a lot and it's reasonably popular. In fact it seems a significant amount of people end up reaching that conclusion if they give it any thought. It's certainly more fun than "random boy".

I love the "Eva is set in a Axis victory" insane theory, I just think it's funny. I have the feeling Asuka wouldn't be so tolerant of all these "inferior races"
