We need a proper translation, but basically Anno and Tsurumaki mentioned earlier today on an event for the new Gundam show an earlier idea for the final scene where Mari was on the other side of the train station.

DeepL wrote: Director Kazuya Tsurumaki has said that recently Director Anno has been liberated from Eva and is in full otaku mode, just like he was with Top and Nadia, and is really into it #ジークアクス #GQuuuuuuX

DeepL wrote:Tsurumaki: “When this was mentioned to me, I remembered that in the case of Eva, Anno had proposed that Shinji and Mari meet on the opposite side of the train platform, but I was not convinced, and the encounter ended up with Shinji bumping into Mari as she came down by parachute.

I'm not sure they mean that Mari would just be another bystander (no mention of Rei, Kaworu or Asuka), if Mari and Shinji would meet by chance, if Mari crossed to the othr side of the station (or if Shinji would do so). Mari showing up out of "nowhere" of course is indeed a callback to her parachuting in. Presumably this will be talked about more in the upcoming CRC interviews. It might also be referring to Mari's introduction in 2.0? An interesting note nonetheless.

That kind of confirms my suspicion that Anno didn't actually want to work on Shin and was tired of EVA.

This is referring to the scene in 2.0 when Shinji and Mari first meet, not the final scene of 3.0+1.0.

I think they mean Shinji and Mari meeting in 2.0. That's why they mentioned the encounter ended up with Shinji bumping into Mari as she came down by parachute.

It's pretty interesting they originally considered Shinji and Mari encounter in 2.0 to be in the train station. That place has always been full of symbolism for Shinji.

It really doesn't. Some art just requires a headspace that's tough to be in.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Wasn’t Anno the only otaku that Miyazaki actually had respects for?

In the context of 2.0, everything new to Shinji's life drop from the sky (Asuka, Mari, Kaworu) and there is a thematic continuity in that, however I think Mari and Shinji meeting on the train station platform would have ended up being a more interesting encounter in light of how the story ended 2 movies and 12 years later.
