I watched NGE (the full series, death & rebirth, and EoE) back in high school in the mid 90s when it first came out. One of the guys in the anime club had friends or family in Japan and he would get VHS tapes of the episodes sent to him by FedEx. Our school had a really nice AV lab and Internet lab so we would download fan subs from newsgroup that were time coded and then use the AV lab to convert the video from NTSC-J to NTSC and hardcode the subs. It was an interesting experience because our staff supervisor was also a philosophy teacher and we had another teacher who taught "a visual media and critical thought" type class sit in on a lot of episodes so they both offered opinions and different ways to think about the show.

Anyway, I kinda fell away from NGE and anime in university because the anime club there was run creeps (2 of the guys are in jail now) and a lot of the people in it were too so the whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. This was late 90s - early 00s so the internet wasn't what it is today and finding new communities wasn't as easy as it is today.

I had heard a lot about Rebuild but had never watched it as a few people told me it was just a condensed version of the story and turned into a series of movies. However, a few months ago I decided to re-watch the series and then watch Rebuild. The series hit a lot differently now that I'm a lot older and have had more experience and Rebuild left me with a lot of, shall we say, thoughts and opinions. I hope that I can find some people to talk about my thoughts and help me sort through them.

I never actually took any of his classes but from what i understand, I don't think he did. He was just a staff supervisor for the anime club.

One thing that I still remember him saying was that many people would probably make the mistake in saying that Rei has no emotions. He pointed out that Rei has lots of emotions (like when Shinji sees her excitedly talk to Gendo). Rei just doesn't know how to express her emotions. Today we'd probably say that she was on the spectrum of has mild autism. She's also the only one that's constantly trying to learn about herself. We see her reading books on genetics, philosophy, and mathematics. She is trying to understand her place in the world and why she is the way she is.

Been a bit of a while, hasn't it?

Last I was here, I left on less than amicable terms (here's a hint: Celery). That, however, was 7 years ago. I'm not quite the rampaging nutcase I was then; getting married and having a kid will do that to you. Still a massive Eva fan, of course, hence why I've returned to the fold. As the avatar might suggest though I stuck my head down the Little Witch Academia rabbit hole and didn't quite manage to pull it out again. Yes, Sucy is best girl, no I will not hear otherwise.

It's good to be back, anyway.
