I'd say it probably will be something other than Eva. I don't think they would even consider a release aftwr summer next year, and that's already much later than anticipated.

I don't think it is.

If I recall correctly, when Shin Kamen Rider released Anno said he had no projects in development for the first time in like 20 years and he was planning to take a long and well-deserved break first and then help Kazuya Tsurumaki with his newest (still unannounced) project first before doing anything new.

Him personally or Khara didn't have any new projects? From what I remember he wanted to distanciate himself from franchises like Evangelion and give more freedom to the internal teams, do I remember correctly? If so it wouldn't necessarily be incompatible and could still tease potential things to come. Who knows.

That's what Animator Expo implied to me, but right now I'm not sure what's next for khara regarding anime. I really, really hope they can simultaneously do w/e Tsurumaki does and a younger staff project.

As for Anno, I think his filmography needs an original animated film. One (final?) masterpiece. But that'll take some time.

Khara def has some work in development. As a studio they've likely got some commercial work and other gigs to keep staff on hand. They're also doing monster work on a show called KAIJU NO.8 that's coming out next Spring and just last month the Khara twitter account put up a post with job openings for a new unnamed project in development so they've got something cooking. We'll just have to wait until they announce it to see what it is.

Regarding Anno no one at this moment no really knows what will be his next project as a writer or director. Fans will, of course, throw out theories based on old rumors or stories but until a project is announced nothing is really official.

Oh Anno, you have a long awaited sequel to Nausicaa to work on. You already got Miyazaki-sans blessing.

Was there no new lantern design in 2024?

Well, he is recovering from a broken leg, so I would assume the lamp festival was the last thing on his mind.
