Different continuity, her universe wrapped up with G vs Destroyah.

I see. I particularly liked the romance she had with Shinjo in G vs. Spacegodzilla and how by the end of the film the soldier who wants to kill G because of the loss of one of his buddies in one of the prior entries of the Heisei era at least could admire the creature.

For some reason, in Destoroyah I couldn't stand Miki calling G's son "little one". Just felt too cliche in an uncomfortable way especially since he pretty up becomes original G's successor by the final image of the Heisei era.

Godzilla x MechaGodzilla (2002)

Image

I finally watched this again for the first time in years and I am still kinda indifferent to it.

Pros & mixed elements!
- Akane is one of the best human characters of the franchise and a genuinely well done strong female character. She doesn't face caricature sexism, the 1 guy that dislikes her has a legit grievance and while he gets put in his place, he isn't demonized & gets a standout heroic moment near the end.
- Very good Godzilla suit. Basically the G2000 suit with a smaller less crocodilan dead. The slightly sloped down snout is unique.
- Great MG suit & abilities.
- The Gojira bones origin & MG rampage are all cool ideas, executed fairly well but not to their full potential IMO.
- Great opening.
- A few standout epic shots (lightning hitting godzilla, godzilla roaring near a pyramid like building, a shutting down Kiryu with a blazing sunset in the background)
SPOILER: Show
Image
Image
Image

- Good score.
- Bringing back the classic maser tanks was cool.
- City sets are ok but pale in comparison to the cities from the first 3 heisei films.

Cons!
- Really bad CGI in places.
- Like GMK, almost no attempts were made to place Godzilla in the background of real cities/scenery like was done and done well in G2000 and results in the monster scenes feeling extremely set bound.
- The Godzilla suit actor's performance is unremarkable, Godzilla seems very stiff, especially during his first encounter with Kiryu.
- All romantic moments were cringy except the post credits scene.
- Small plot hole of why they didn't try and use the absolute zero as soon as they arrived in the final battle.

Overall!
- Rating: Good, simply good.
- Something is just off, it feels less than the sum of it's parts.
- Not optimistic about revisiting Tokyo SOS (direct sequel to this) as I didn't like it as much as this when I watched them years ago & getting rid of Akane (the best part of this) was a giant fail.

Rating the various MechaG movies!
Godzilla vs MechaG (1974) - Very Good
Terror of MechaG (1975) - Great
Godzilla vs MechaG 2 (1993) - Near Great
Godzilla x MechaG (2002) - Good
Godzilla - Tokyo SOS (2003) [haven't watched in a long time] - Ok / Meh to Decent?
Godzilla vs Kong (2021) - Decent

Sad fact about that particular G film is that the actor who played Hayama ironically irl abused his then wife Mika Katsumura who played Yuuri the Pink Ranger in Mirai Sentai Timeranger.

The GVK sequel is confirmed to he a team up movie between them.
"sequel pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence - and our own."

It's added that this movie will "delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever."

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is back behind the camera, while returning cast members include Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3), Brian Tyree Henry (Eternals), and Kaylee Hottle (Godzilla vs Kong). As for the movie's additions, an impressive ensemble has been assembled that includes Dan Stevens (Legion), Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Alex Ferns (The Batman) and Rachel House (Thor: Ragnarok).

I would have liked separate Kong & Godzilla sequels but this is fine, better than the rumored Son of Kong remake & I am pleased this confirms it won't be a rematch film. Pleased with Hall returning, that said I could do without Henry's character.

Not sure what villain we may get. It being in the Hollow Earth maybe Megalon & the Mu Civilization?
Hyper unlikely idea but there were those floating blue/purple crystals, maybe they were a tease for Krystalak (original American kaiju from a old godzilla video game) - https://wikizilla.org/wiki/Krystalak

...

We are also getting a live action Disney+ King Kong series produced by James Wan. Unclear if it will take place in the Monster-verse or not.

:D

Gamera - Rebirth anime trailer - https://youtu.be/XNh3aRBoCPg

Cons
- Animation/artstyle is exactly what I feared, cheap jerky 3D garbage (I hoped for something closer to Arcane, Castlevania or Blood of Zeus)

Pros / Hopes
- Looks like it is giving us lots of action which the Netflix Godzilla trilogy severely lacked.
- Love that they are using Jiger so prominently, I have long considered his original film while not great to be the most underrated of the series. I hope Gamera does not defeat him too easily.
- Jiger's design is great.
- Gamera's design is good.
- Looks like they are balancing well the focus on kids of the 60s-70s era with the much more serious tone of the phenomenal 90s series.

Godzilla: Minus One

In a sense a modern take on classic origins, coupled with post-war destruction and a country trying to get back on its feet.

Appletv+'s Monarch - Legacy of Monsters
Series set in Legendary's Monster-verse, I am notably more interested in this than the Godzilla & Kong sequel.

New perspective during the 2014 Godzilla bridge sequence.

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

The design basically appears to be the same as from the Godzilla Ride.
Overall I like it a lot. Legs are a bit large but not as disproportionate as Shin or as huge as the legs on some of the statues of the Ride design. Head is 90s suit like.

Some people think that Godzilla Minus One is "calling back" to Shin by having its protagonist played by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who played adult Shinji at the end of 3.0+1.0. Go figure.

Anno did say he didn't want to make Shin Godzilla 2. Ironically, Anno himself used VAs from Sailor Moon to try and entice Ikuhara to work with him on Eva, though that didn't work out. I have no idea if Toho is that interested in having him back for another Godzilla movie, but as far fetched as this theory sounds, it's actually not without precedent...

Saw Minus One yesterday night and really loved it. It felt like a fusion of Godzilla movies and like, Roberto Rossellini or someone like that. Like if you could somehow imagine a kaiju attacking partway through Germany Year Zero that's sort of what this is.

Also the basic premise here of kamikaze pilot that abandons his mission and then encounters Godzilla is just a really strong pull for one of these movies.

The Godzilla series is firing on all cylinders right now and it is allowing for some nice variety to choose from...
- Minus One is giving us gritty bleak dead seriousness (it's also getting god tier reviews)
- Monarch is moderately serious akin to G2014.
- GXK will be more outlandish dumb fun hopfully without going full retard like the MCU sadly fell into.

I do not quite love the art style but the animation quality is immeasurably better than the Netflix Godzilla trilogy or Gamera Rebirth.

Some of the Minus One posters go HARD.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."
