I'm working on my own subtitles for the movie, and I'm having a bit of trouble with Asuka's military rank that Sakura mentions about an hour in, when responsibility for Shinji is being transferred. In Japanese, the rank is 戦時特務少佐 (senji tokumu shousa), which Google translates as "Major of Wartime Special Affairs". The subtitles I'm working off of translated it as "Temporary Special Senior Major". But in that same scene, there's a closeup of a document that Asuka signed that seems to list her rank as starting with "War Substitute...". I'm trying to make the subtitles consistent with the visuals, and the best I could come up with is "War Substitute Special Major". Can anyone offer some insight?

Educated guess based on general knowledge of military affairs: People are sometimes temporarily/provisionally promoted to ranks higher than they would normally have/in more buerocratic armies higher than they would be technically qualified (read: have the clearance for) when someone in that spot is needed or for extraordinary feats. If that rank sticks after the war is over is a whole other can of worms, but I'm guessing that something along those lines is the case for Asuka.

As far as the difference between subtitles and official documents I wouldn't super worry about that, it's not unheard of that ranks, especially the more complex ones like this, have different descriptors to mean the same thing
