Bird Box 2018

This film is such a hot mess, like I feel this month and last month have not been my day when it comes to watching films, they either had crap first acts, second acts or been a train wreck. Though in this, the issue is the characters, representation and general story.

SPOILER: Show
This tries to pander and thinks is being really clever when it's not, oh look here's your gay man oh sorry we killed him ten minutes in here's your interracial couple, but they have zero chemistry don't work on any level and z guy comes of a creep at the start of the film he also dies how convenient.

Here's a character who is a homophobic narcissistic, but he's good really, even though he let his 3rd wife walk in to a burning car in the first act and did fuck all to save her. The only nice character is treated like shit even though she is showing genuine compassion and kindness and being a good person. Spoiler, she doesn't live because kindness is weakness in this film's eyes.

The lead wears make up constantly even though it's dooms day cause you gotta look good even though the world has gone to shit right? Sandra is a great actor, just not in here. Her character is a mean, distant and cruel, and she doesn't even name her kids there just called boy and girl, which just made me think of Catherine Cooksons The Girl and the two maids going why does she call her girl, the cat has a name? With reference to the crazy mother who abuses the lead character as she's not her daughter and therefore won't refer to her by name.

So Sandra's character doing the same raises the question as to if she should even have either of these children to start with? Should her character have died in act 2 and someone else have them? As it's clear she never wanted her own child from the start but no one was pushing her to get an adoption her family were just forcing her down the motherhood route, but the film's message is your not allowed to say no and if you do everyone around you will punish you if you don't comply.

Where this film gets really messed up is it states the presence what ever it is as you never ever see it once which is a huge film mistake as the viewer does not know the stakes at all as all they see are some rustling bushes. They state if your mentally well, you kill yourself. If you have mental illness, you become its slave and do its bidding and try to get others to see it.

Which is a really messed up way to hit at people who have mental illness, as it's saying your worthless and weak, and you'll buckle and do z bad guy's bidding. Its plays again to the tone that people with mental illness are the most dangerous to sociality, which they are not in reality. The film feels to me like one that wants so bad to look progressive but doesn't want to do its homework in any way and thinks it can wing the class, when it can't.

Like I know there doing a sequel of this, but I dread to think how its gonna turn out....

He's All That (2021)

I actually preferred this reboot over She's All That since it showcases the measures some people will go to get fame even if temporary. The positive message to just be you no matter what was so great although I definitely could've gone without two Kardashian scenes... :irked:

3 From Hell

Probably the best Rob Zombie film that wasn't a Halloween remake. The Devil's Rejects had their own chemistry as a fucked up family indeed but when I watch how Baby, Otis, and Midnight Wolfman work well as a trio of maniacs headed for the border, it's a hell of a ride leaving many dead in the wake.

In the past week, I watched the R-rated cut of The Descent for the first time since it came out in theaters and the 1999 Japanese Ring 2 sequel. As far as the Descent goes, of all the transformed female warriors who started out traumatic due to a tragedy, the main character Sarah was definitely kickass. And the Ring 2 1999 flick, I would've liked it better if almost everybody weren't trying to exploit Yoichi's power like what happened in the past with Shizuko but I gather that was the point if only that didn't make the doctor character such a weasel.

Is that the cut with the real dark ending
SPOILER: Show
In that she didn't get out and was having a hallucinating about seeing the light and is seeing her dead daughter
As here in the UK we had that cut in cinemas whereas I heard the US had the happier cut. I wish Neil Marshall would do a soft reboot on the descent as the 2nd movie was not directed by him
SPOILER: Show
And it kind of sucks as the director Jon Harris does not understand the source material
along with Dog Soldiers 2.

The recent Amazon Prime cut was the ending where
SPOILER: Show
Sarah gets spooked when hallucinating Juno right next to her
. The Region 1 Unrated DVD that I possess is the one with
SPOILER: Show
Sarah doesn't escape the cave and pictures herself having a birthday with her daughter

Watched "Gantz O" Saturday night, had been meaning to get to it as it looked intriguing and I liked it. The CGI was pretty good, movements and expressions
as well as decent character differentiations. My only criticisms would have to be the "helpless female syndrome" 1 character ok. I've met a few clingy school
girls in my time but 2 was way over the top. Criticism 2 would be the AI embedded into said ladies breasts causing them to move in all manner of gravity
defying gyrations during any action sequence....I mean dude you went through so much trouble to make everything else look good......(sigh)

Kate 2021

Like screw rotten for downgrading this when it was as good and fun as Wicks and has very real stakes, it's a fantastic film. I'm guessing their all just disappointed as they didn't get there sexy spy moment like in Atomic Blonde, and she played as a full on killer who goes to every length like Wicks.

SPOILER: Show
I also see why Hollywood might have passed on this script, as god forbid you show the real slow death effects of radiation poisoning. Like tremors, blindness, loosing concentration. Throwing up, losing your teeth, coughing up blood as these are the real effects Kate goes through as she is dying the only thing they didn't show is hair loss, and serious diarrhoea and IBS which also come with this form of poisoning.

I like that like Atomic blonde they really bruise and bloody Kate's character up, but it corrects the mistakes in that film made like no fighting in sexy clothing, it's all flat shoes and practical. Also, the sex scene in here, the only one it has is not what it seems, and she could have hired a male escort or sex worker as she does not have full on sex with him, she's not naked, and she pays him to leave as she needs the room as a shooting spot for a target. (Also renting a boyfriend is a thing you can do in Japan, so you could also read it as that)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead fucking owns this role, like why she isn't an A-lister I will never know as her acting her is excellent she sells that this person is dying and desperate that their life is ebbing away and that and I'd say the dynamic between her and Ani has Ripley/Newt vibes if Newt were older and more in your face as Kate's reason for wanting out is she wanted a family and Ani mirror the daughter she's been thinking about.

Varrick is also a real interesting take on the handler he comes over a real nice guy and the film does not reveal right till the end just how much of a twisted fuck he is and how he trains women to kill by making them hate then trains them to be killers then clearly replaces them with a new model if they want out, but at no point does the character turn in a cheesy way. Where they suddenly turn nasty, instead he remains calm and pleasant and fatherly right to the face off and it's a fascinating subversion on the betrayal handler trope.

My only nitpick is Jojima who is gay and dresses very flamboyant because the film does not make clear at any point this is a K/J pop reference and that's why he is dressed like this but if you didn't know any better you'd assume this is a backward gay reference similar to the 80s. To the movie's credit he was one of the hardest characters they fight which is a good thing.

Someone has said bisexual lighting was used in Kate to hint bisexuality like Loki, but her sexuality is never confirmed, which is a shame.

For a friend's birthday, we went out for dinner and then went to the movie theatre. They picked out Shang Chi; it was pretty cool. Not a big fan of Marvel movies, though, but I won't complain

Just finished watching Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991) and even though the relatively short runtime felt a bit taxing, it was worth it if only to watch the absolute exotic beauty of Tia Carrere whom I regret still not seeing her in the Wayne's World flicks. I mostly know her from True Lies dancing the tango in the beginning with Arnold and also regretfully constantly her face hit by the head terrorist and Jamie Lee Curtis even if she was a villain.

We got something similar in Edge of Darkness (2010) with Mel Gibson but it wasn't quite that gruesome.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

[vague spoilers]

Pros!
- Good number of kills & the unrated footage is very much worth it. Extremely brutal & graphic without being unrealistic / outlandish.
- Does a good job of showing the reactions of loves ones to some of the deaths which adds to their emotional effectiveness even if we didn't spend much time getting to know the victim.
- The miner outfit is extremely iconic & effective.
- The mine is a fantastic setting. As the cast get deeper it becomes darker & wetter.
- The mayor/sheriff are actually responsible & shut down the valentine's dance once they know a killer is on the loose.
- For once the fat guy isn't comedy relief or the practical joker. He is both a stoner but also often the voice of reason & straight up manhandles the leads simultaneously when they get into a fight.
- Film has a authentic friendly small town atmosphere.

Neutral / Mixed observations!
- The quality of film for the restored unrated footage is lesser than the main film & has a faint sepia tone to it. But it gives it a kinda aged errie feel to the sequences.
- Sarah is gorgeous & is a decent conflicted character but she doesn't fit the mold of a final girl & isn't a fighter.
- Score is unremarkable.

Cons!
- The 2 male leads aren't particularly likable, we get very few scenes where they aren't tensely brooding over the love triangle they are in with Sarah. This was probably done on purpose so both would be red herrings but it still is off putting.
- Once we get near to the final showdown the killer's identity becomes fairly obvious by nature of there being no one else alive for it to be.
- No nudity.
- I understand the Sheriff keeping a public lid on the murders to avoid panic but him appearing to keep it from his Deputy was weird.

The Devil's Advocate which is hands down my most favorite 1997 film and maybe even of all time! Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino are a heavy hitting duo especially in their talks about the law and whether or not God truly cares about humankind which is what I got out of the long speech Al gave Keanu about God being a prankster, giving man instincts however setting the rules in opposition, and enjoying the way humanity tries to stick to the good path.

The Babysitter and The Babysitter (2): Killer Queen

Both of these are basically funny parody trailers stretched out into whole movies. They don't really work as horror because there's no tension at all (the protagonist never really seems to be in danger and the villains keep dying because of their own incompetence) but it doesn't work the concept of incompetent killers to full comedic effect the way that a better horror-comedy does, like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which these movies are pretty clearly aping. There are some funny moments (including one character who's a walking sophomoric jab at Twilight and yet is oddly the highlight of the films).

Both of the movies have a deeply uncomfortable aspect in that the male gaze (which is expected to some degree with this genre) dominates the film, but unlike every other element of the teen slasher that it's trying (and often failing) to parody, it comes across not as an artistic choice to highlight something about teen horror movies, or parody itself, or make some kind of a statement, but simply as McG (ugh) taking the opportunity to film the leads in skimpy outfits, especially Bella Thorne, whose character is so obsessed with her own breasts that about three-quarters of her dialogue is devoted to them.

Unlike brilliant takes on horror like Cabin in the Woods, which takes apart the tropes and indicts the audience for enjoying torture and slaughter of attractive people, or Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, which is an irreverent but loving send up of the redneck slasher genre, or Netflix's own Fear Street Trilogy that flips a standard "cursed town"/"vengeance haunting" plot on its head to make a brilliant social commentary on institutional prejudice, capitalism, patriarchy, and inherited wealth, The Babysitter and its sequel are paint by numbers TvTropes style storytelling.

In fact, they come across as written by TvTropes editors. Self aware but with no purpose to the self awareness, reveling in presenting the tropes as they are without any kind of commentary or novel approach to them, with no surprises or attempts at any kind of plot twist or originality.

There is, finally, something really creepy and obvious about the way McG revels in how much one of the supporting actresses, Emily Alyn Lind, ah, developed in between the filming of the two movies.

The Addams Family 1991 is a spectacular experience of which I enjoyed much. Every actor and actress including Raul Julia, may his talented soul rest in Heaven, brought their best material to bring about the chills, thrills, and kills!

The Simple-Minded Murderer (1982):

Young Stellan Skarsgård plays a Forrest Gump type in 1930s Sweden who suffers horrible mistreatment in the hands of a literal Nazi Scrooge, until he finally snaps and the film turns into First Blood for a brief final stretch. Gorgeously shot and completely metal when it gets to the part with the improvised samurai sword, this Swedish facemelter is unfortunately unavailable in English.

John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness (1987)
Image

Great overall, IMO the 3rd best Carpenter film after The Thing & Halloween.
Great score as usual.
Good mood & several genuinely chilling moments ("In fact, you will not be saved!")
Church setting is great especially the lower levels.
Acting of the whole cast is pretty solid.

The film's pace is pretty slow but mostly that was fitting & I enjoyed such but in the 3rd 4th of the film while the "incubation" was taking place it slowed down even more with the characters trapped in small rooms trying to dig through the walls to each other. Such is the only con of note I can think of.
Dennis Dun (big trouble in little china) becomes a little annoying in the later half but it's never a major issue.

Watched a French Sci/fi movie on 'flix last night called "Oxygene" or "O2'

pretty decent over all..though the dub was a little cringy in spots. A woman wakes up in a cryogenic capsule not knowing who she is or why she is in there and has very little control over the computer interface keeping her in there so if you are claustrophobic it will be especially horrifying.....

To this day, American Pie 2 is my most favorite of the whole saga and I make sure to repeat at least once. One thing I noticed that maybe in the theatrical cut but left in the uncut is that near the ending when Jim and Michelle get together and start to leave the band camp auditorium, the camp counselor looks at them and near his mouth looked like he had a case of syphilis. Probably the circumstances of playing "Spanish Flea" on the trumpet while Jim had his asshole shoved by Michelle the instrument.
