So let's talk the spears (Spoilers obviously). I believe they mentioned in the new movie that there were 6 spears? And all of them must've been retrieved after Second impact, from the Adams, since if Lilith would've had it's own spear it would've prevented the life on earth to flourish after First impact. So therefore all the spears must've been retrieved from the Adams. Four spears for the four Adams we see in the first movies:

From the flashback to Second Impact in 1.0.
SPOILER: Show

And then Longinus and Cassius for the fifth and leader Adam (Eva 13)?

My theory is that the only surviving spears were the latter, and the first four spears were destroyed in Second Impact, and the leftovers were given to research (Made into experimental weapons at Bethany Base etc).

To quote the EvaWiki on "Spear of Longinus":
"Eva-05 possesses a weapon called "Anti-Angel Extermination Weapon Spear of Longinus Basic Type (Pseudo-Restoration)."[9] "Pseudo-Restoration" could imply that Eva-05's weapon was based upon one of the Spears present at Second Impact, but it is unclear what is meant by the "pseudo" in its title (partially restored?)."

It would add up for the final to the spears being needed for future plans according to the dead sea scrolls, and them being the key to instrumentallity. The first time we see the spear of Longinus is when it's impaled in Lilith in 1.0, so we can assume they impaled Lilith to stop it from growing just like in the original series. Cassius we first see being moved on the moon wrapped in cloth in 2.0. So with that we can easily assume that they launched it up there with Mark 06 to be used in stopping Near-Third impact. No other spears are mentioned or seen except for in that one flashback to the Second impact, so it can be hard to tell. And it's not quite crystal clear on why Cassius changed it's shape to resemble it's counterpart Longinus while they were both impaled in Lilith in 3.0. Since Cassius changed it's shape back to it's true form when Eva-01 grabbed it it the new movie, then perhaps it changed when Mark 06 started Third impact between 2.0 and 3.0. The spears may change shape depending on what they're being used for, Despair or Hope. I'd love to hear some thoughts on this!

I don't think the Spear of Cassius changed during the Third Impact. The Spear of Cassius being transformed in Spear of Longinus seems to happen later.

We should consider that is pretty likely the Spear of Cassius and the Spear of Longinus were used to stop the Third Impact. That's why these are impaled in Lilith's body (the epicenter of the Third Impact).

Also, we should consider that the Hope by Cassius doesn't seem to be exactly a good thing.

The humans were given two options. They could be destroyed by the Angels or they destroy the Angels and take their place (as creatures with Fruit of Life but without Fruit of Knowledge).

The despair of Longinus seems to represent the first option, while the hope of Cassius seems to represent the second option.

Interesting, then there must be more explanations to why Cassius changed shape while it was impaled in Lilith. Argh, if we only knew exactly how the Third impact was performed. And yes it seems likely that "Despair and Hope" has a bit more deeper meaning beyond the words, so you're probably not wrong. But then the question arises: Why do spears change shape?
