Even if you don't know who Phil Tippett is, you're doubtlessly familiar with his work. He's the guy responsible for the creature designs and stop-motion sequences in Return of the Jedi, Starship Troopers, RoboCop, Willow, and Jurassic Park. But for the past 30 years, he's been working on this personal project-- an all-stop-motion feature film titled Mad God. The movie will be premiering at the Locarno Film Festival this coming Thursday, and they describe it thusly:

Mad God is an experimental animated film set in a world of monsters, mad scientists and war pigs. A corroded diving bell descends amidst a ruined city and the Assassin emerges from it to explore a labyrinth of bizarre landscapes inhabited by freakish denizens. This unique labour of love combines many innovative animation techniques and has taken Phil Tippett 30 years to complete.

That alone sounds unspeakably fascinating, and I sincerely hope this movie is picked up for a wide theatrical release.

For whatever reason, stop-motion has never really been used for any major Hollywood blockbuster. The closest thing I can think of to an exception is Chicken Run, but that was a British movie. Mostly it’s small, independent movies that use stop-motion. Why do Americans seem not to like stop-motion compared to hand-drawn animation and CGI?

The suits don’t like it, and as a rule, Americans don’t get the “willing” part of the willing suspension of disbelief.

It was used in mayor films but by Ray Harryhausen with things like Clash Of The Titans and Jason And The Argonauts and a number of Ray's other film between the 50's/60's/70's, but it was going out of style by the early 80's as it was being replaced with animatronics so its more of a case that it just went out of style due to cinema effects changing, but I do wish main stream films would bring it back as it has a massive charm.

The last huge blockbuster type movie that used it as a centerpiece was Dragonslayer, I believe. Great movie, but weirdly gruesome for a family-oriented sword and sorcery flick.

I’m not trailing about live-action movies that use stop motion for practical effects. Those, as you mention, have a long and successful history.

Movies that are completely stop-motion? Not so much. You get a few breakout hits here and there, like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Chicken Run, but by and large they tend to be cult films, or minor successes at best.

I wish Disney would release that unedited on Blu-ray, it's such an underrated film as it subverted so many tropes of the time.

SPOILER: Show
The unedited version has Galen finding the princess's dead body being eaten by baby dragons, which he kills, and later Vermithrax Pejorative find them dead which fuels her anger further but also changes the narrative. In that she's not just an angry monster killing on impulse, she's an old in pain dragon properly at the end of her life and her need for human food is to feed her young, it also means somewhere out there is probably a male dragon which Galen and Valerian have yet to even meet.

Thank you for clarication there is a series called The Trap Door and its flully stop motion it was made by the people who went on to found Aardman. It also has some real dark humour in it.

Wes Anderson also made two stop-motion animated movies— Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle Of Dogs. Ironically, Isle of Dogs, despite being an adult animated movie that wasn’t a comedy, ended up being the more successful of the two.

I didn't realize there was an edited version. I've never seen it without the scene you reference included.

I remember this as it was in the original UK/DVD/ VHS version before Disney got the film rights and put out their version of Blu-ray in the 90's/2000's doing what they deemed a kid friendly version, though I wish they'd sell off as they've never rebooted dragon slayer, and they should release the unedited version.
As Legend in 1985 has two versions, the home release vertion and Theatrical, so there is no reason dragon slayer can't have a two version release as well.

I grew up watching claymation classics such as the Wallace and Gromit shorts and Bump in the Nignt. I have all of the Wallace and Gromit shorts on Bluray and the complete series of Bump in Night on DVD. I remember going to see a sneak preview of Chicken Run as a kid and then my parents took us to the toy store and bought us all of the Chicken Run figures and plushies and we still have them. We even collected all of the Chicken Run Burger King toys to build the plane too.

I had forgotten about bump in the night, that is a really unrated gem.

Found a few other stop motion channels on youtube.

It’s screening at festivals, but Tippet is still looking for a distributor who can take it to theaters.

I also have fond memories of watching Gumby. As for stop motion movies I love The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.

This movie seems like something that is going to haunt my dreams for a while. Stop motion always seems really good at capturing the grotesque- manages to look more wet than what CGI can do, and can move more fluidly than animatronics in a lot of regards. The trailer made more squeamish than I've felt in a while watching movies.

Glad to see appreciation for Tippett's work, as well as Harryhausen's. I was just watching bits of 20 Million Miles to Earth yesterday, as well as the Kali swordfight in The Voyages of Sinbad. Stop motion is just lovely, and I'd hate to see it wither away. The willing suspension of disbelief that comes with it, I feel, has allowed it to be spectacular without stupid "realism preserving" crap that obscures everything- ever notice how many blockbusters have big battles in the rain or in dust or in nighttime because they want to hide the CGI's flaws?

I kind of miss stop-motion in movies too, even though I was born long past its heyday. If this movie gets a wide theatrical release, maybe it will spark some renewed interest in it.
