Why wasn't "New Century" kept as the title, It makes just as much sense as "Neon Genesis"...Even though both Titles translate to basically the same meaning.

I have heard that Gainax changed it for asthetic reasons, Is it true and why?

I agree - Neon Genesis Evangelion sounds a billion times cooler. It also differentiates the show from other shows by not having a clichéd title.

I just want to make sure you are asking why Gainax rendered the title in English as "Neon Genesis Evangelion" in the show and promotional materials. A common error is in thinking that the title "Neon Genesis Evangelion" came about during the English language licensing and localization process.

However if memory recalls, Gainax had contact with potential localizers very on which might have played a role in that title. I can't remember. I might be flubbing some details.

In the Genesis 0:0 documentary, Anno actually says they chose "Neon Genesis" because it sounded cool.

I believe he also said in Genesis 0:0 that he had two different titles so that he could have more than one meaning.

Gainax made TWO titles for Eva, one in English and one in Japanese (This is kinda similar to how the Episode titles are named. For instance, the Japanese title of "Sincerely Yours" versus its English title "I Need You" ("One More Final" being what Movie Episode 26' is refereed as)), though they mean different things. Apparently they did something similar with other shows like Nadia (not that I've seen it, so I couldn't say).

Shin Seiki Evangelion= New Century Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion= New Gospel Evangelion

If you just look at any Japanese merchandise, you'll see it says the ENGLISH title, showing ADV/whoever had nothing to do with it.

Even the dreaded(??) track on S2 Works of what would have been the Eyecatch music/announcers say the words "Neon Genesis Evangelion".

I always thought Neon Genesis Evangelion was "First Book of the New Gospel" .... ? That translation seems to make a lot more sense, and "New Beginning Gospel" doesn't sound like grammatically correct English, which leads me to believe it's just a crude, direct translation (I'm not sure, though!).

Apostolos, IIRC. It would translate to Apostles/Messengers, something to that extent, which makes a hell of a lot more sense than Angels.

You heard that from Matt Greenfield, who was wrong. That's translating "Genesis" as "first book" instead of as "beginning", and he got the syntax wrong. Really, the best translation to English would be "Gospel of the New Beginning".

Which makes you wonder why Anno went to the trouble of putting Angel on all the scans of them in the series...

Yup. Angel was in the OP as well if I remember.

There's also Human Instrumentality Project, which when translated from the Japanese, would get Human Completion Project. And dictionary says they aren't synonym.

I bet you knew that.

Yeah.

Although what Anno was going for was one thing (which was a Sci-fi reference), he choose another name (yet another Sci-fi reference), which dealt with something else.

Blargh. I can't recall which was which. >_< I *think* he was that choose the name Instrumentality although what was happening really went along with that Sci-if term Completion?

I think It had something to do with childhoods end by arthur C. clarke (hes the guy who wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey)
