It's been a day since I watched Shin Evangelion and I'm finally comfortable talking about it.
I had the pleasure of watching this movie with my stepfather (the guy who introduced me to EVA in the first place) and we were both speechless as the credits went by. Shin Evangelion is amazing. This is a movie about growing up and accepting change. Most characters, at first, aren't willing to let go of the past. This is true for Shinji, Asuka, Misato and especially Gendo. While Shinji is maturing, his father is regressing. Gendo's plan to meet Yui has always been "over the top" and the film plays with it. Here we have a guy who is ready to kill gods and become a divine creature just to go back instead of moving forward. Underneath his glasses he is literally hollow. The moment he realized that Yui was part of Shinji all along was so emotional it almost brought tears to my eyes. One of my favorite Evangelion sequences, period.
There's something so special about the last few minutes of Shin. Frankly, I loved every segment of this movie. The Village sequence was superb and set the tone for the entire movie. Somehow, the film's last third was able to top it, though. Again, it's about accepting the change and moving forward. These characters are in repeat cycles. Kaworu must experience the same thing over and over, while Gendo is always thirsting for more and more (clones, Evangelions and so on). Asuka is trapped in a body that simply refuses to grow. As a woman, she must relive her frustrated feelings for Shinji again and again. Speaking of Asuka, I'm so happy with her character in this movie. She is in a large number of diverse scenes and plays a big role in the story. It's everything I've always wanted from Shikinami. I'm also happy that her relationship with Shinji received the closure it deserved. I feel like Asuka has always represented a very emotional and human side of Anno. Her bond with Shinji was always meant to be an extreme portrayal of reality, but now they can rest and move on as grownups.
Ultimately, this movie is about life itself. While Gendo spent most of his time running away from himself and disregarding human life, Kaji was ensuring that life was preserved. We change, Evangelion changed and now it's over.
After watching all these movies one after the other, I can say that there is no point in ranking them. In my opinion, Shin is in a league of its own. It's the best NTE movie by a long shot. I honestly believe it's on a par or close to the other two Evangelion endings. It's similar to EOE, while also being unique.
Sure, I could write a whole text on why I think HA is a mediocre film. I don't want to do it, though (at least right now). I would rather celebrate the one superb NTE movie. I'm happy.
Just sit here and waste your precious time. When you want to do something, don't do it right away. Don't do it when you can. Read my posts instead. It's the only way to live a life without regrets.
