Ok, here's the idea I was talking about a few posts ago:

Post-failed EoE 3I (failed as in Rebuild's "Near 3I")
After everyone sees the actual power of the Evangelions, with no more angels to defeat and with NERV and SEELE's secrets in the wrong hands, every country begins to construct Evangelions.
Rich countries build a couple. Poorer countries band together to cover the astronomical costs of a single unit. A 3-year Cold War of sorts begins. First, Evas in capital cities as last-resort defense. Then Eva units placed in borders over territorial claims. Then hastily put-together-units used in warzones.
A pilot-replacement conveyor belt begins as lots of kids brought in start to develop serious issues (all unaware of course, of what makes Evas tick). Only after a N4I that erases Turkey and all the way down to El Cairo, everyone decides it's madness and all remaining Evangelions are sealed away.

Fast forward 9 years. A now 26 year old Shinji and Asuka are requested by the JSSDF's very own Maya Ibuki to help them train a new set of pilots "just in case".
Will Shinji -who just wants to be left alone- and Asuka -now a UN emissary for Eva decommisioning- help subject a few more innocents to the traumatic experience Eva piloting is?
How will the world react to the idea of Evas still existing and being practically combat-ready?
And of course, plenty of fan-service too!

Only similar idea I had to that was one where Shinji is not given a choice over whether he wants to be an instructor or not.

Or to be more exact, his choices were to take the job or take his chances with the firing squad alongside most of the kids, as merely having the ability to sync is officially considered a crime against humanity by the post-3I UN.

The way I thought about it, Maya would resort to her late senpai's shady manipulations. It would ultimately boil down to 'we are gonna do it like it or not, but you can at least help the cope with it better."

I think I'm going to write a fanfic where the Ikari and Langley-Soryu families have an intense inter-generational feud stemming from the long-standing rivalry between their family-owned automobile dealerships.

Set in, oh, let's say Ohio.

Funny, that. One of my shipping-focused smut ideas I actually spent time thinking on details about was a Shinji/Mana one where the two families are both heads of major corporations and decide to do a corporate merger plus arranged marriage between the heirs. Both heirs in question have been asked for their opinion at age 14 and both tentatively agreed, but it's not until age 16 when they finally meet for the first time by way of Mana moving in with the Ikaris to get to know her future husband until the actual marriage (which won't happen until they both turn 18).

An idea I had for a Eva fanfiction which is quite an old one in itself.

The basic premise I had for the story was basically what would have happened if Shinji decided to run at the end of 3.0, instead of the Simply letting the wille capture him,

how I imagine the story going is that he would wonder the near third impact affected Earth, trying to understand himself and maybe even figured out a way how to fix everything for good, I also imagined that he wouldn't be affected as much by the core contamination, because like the other pilots he was affected on a fundamental level by synchronising with an Evangelion unit.
although I was thinking of maybe having it where this only prolines his life, and that the core contamination is slowly killing him regardless, I could also imagine his character in quite different from how it's portrayed in 3.0 and 3.0 + 1.0, due to the amount of time that has passed which I wanted to be around about 6 or 7 years after the events or 3.0 all the while I can imagine that Wille and Nerv are still trying to get their hands on him, with Nerv wanting to use him as a catalyst for human instrumentality and Wille wanting to imprison him or possibly even execute him, because the danger he poses by simply existing
a humble artist by day, an absolutely god-awful fanfic Writer by night

Fifteen years after a cataclysmic event known as the known as the Mt. Markham Incident, the world is slowly beginning to unravel. Mankind is polarized and distrustful more than ever, unknowingly manipulated at the whims of puppet masters with plans to remake society in their image. One of the few hopes for a free humanity rests in the hands of the Artifical Evolution Laboratory, led by the cold Gendou Ikari and his wife Yui. They have been developing humanoid mechs they brand as the "Evangelions" to help humanity rebuild from the disasters of the past. Years after being neglected by his parents, Shinji Ikari, Gendou and Yui’s 14-year-old son, returns to Tokyo-3. Shinji is in a perpetual internal battle against the deeply buried feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. Reluctant to open himself up to another, Shinji's life and world is forever changed when he learns the real reason he was summoned, to serve as a test pilot for Evangelion Test Unit-01.

Evangelion 00.01: Introduction
SPOILER: Show
In 2015, fifteen years after a global cataclysm, a massive terrestrial geomagnetic storm known as the Mt. Markham Disaster, fourteen-year-old Shinji Ikari is summoned to Tokyo-3 by his estranged parents. Shinji gets caught in violent clashes between the JSSDF Ground Forces and ultranationalists protesting the UN’s presence in Japan but is rescued by Misato Katsuragi who is his legal guardian, homeroom teacher, and a UN Forces personnel officer, who brings him to the UN Artificial Evolution Laboratory. There, his parents Gendo Ikari, his father, and Yui Ikari, his mother, pressure Shinji to serve as a test pilot for Evangelion Test Unit-01, a 9.5 meter-tall, humanoid bipedal vehicle, as part of the “Project E” system testing phase. Shinji initially leaves the laboratory in resentment at his parents before he realizes that his cousin Rei Ayanami, and his parents, are already struggling to move the project forward, and he decides to take part. Shinji emerged unconscious during the simulation due to attacks inflicted by the simulated opponent on Unit 01, due to the unit going into a feral-like mode during the systems testing. After the battle, Misato drives Shinji back to her place, and he continues his classes at the International Service Academy’s local secondary school and extracurricular preparatory school. Asuka Langley Soryu, a fourteen-year-old childhood friend and classmate, comes by to wake him up for classes. It’s revealed that Shinji is pursuing an elective in criminal investigations while Asuka and Rei are pursuing public health. When another systems test takes place, Shinji's classmates and longtime Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida join last minute to aid Shinji after a simulation starts to malfunction. Still, the simulated enemy throws Unit 01 onto a hillside, winding them. Misato, overseeing the systems testing, has the two take cover behind Unit 01 and all three retreat, but Shinji ignores the orders and destroys the enemy with Unit 01's knife. After Misato scolds him for insubordination, Shinji wanders off late at night to the city park before returning around midnight.

During another round of systems testing, Shinji is sent out to conduct a simulated attack in Unit 01; the opponent fires a powerful laser, causing him to fall unconscious, before beginning to drill into the simulated Tokyo-3. He regains consciousness several hours later. Rei tells him that something went wrong with the systems test and that a new simulation will be needed to counter what is likely a “heisenbug” in the simulation before leaving. Misato brings Shinji to his parents, who she says want to speak with him privately: Yui explains the purpose of Project E and apologizes to Shinji for their absence in his life. She goes on to thank him and express her appreciation for his efforts. Gendo briefly seconds Yui’s statement but apologizes for his coldness so far. He promises that Project E will soon be completed, and they can start spending time as a proper family. Shinji agrees to pilot Unit 01 alongside Rei in Unit 00 as part of the simulation to counter the heisenbug, wielding a positron cannon, which in reality would require the entire electrical power output of Japan to power, like a sniper rifle, and successfully destroys the Angel. Rei is barely conscious of defending Shinji from the opponent's return fire, but he saves her and pills her out of her entry plug in the simulation room. Rei, usually introverted and socially awkward, shares a smile with him.

Upon returning to Misato’s apartment, Shinji finds that his childhood friend Asuka has moved into one of the empty guest rooms. Shocked, she explains that she’ll be living with Misato and him from then on as she was chosen to be the second “Dedicated Pilot” for Project E.

Evangelion 00.20: Rising
SPOILER: Show
In a system testing simulation at the Artificial Evolution Laboratory, a simulated entity escapes its confinement and tries to break out of an era designated Bethany Base. Still, Mari Makinami Illustrious, a new designated pilot, launches a simulated Evangelion Provisional Unit-05 and destroys the entity by self-destructing the EVA and safely ejecting at the last moment. After the simulation finishes, she’s greeted by Gendo and Yui, who thank her for participating on short notice in the simulation, and say that the data gathered will help them move to the ground testing phase.

Meanwhile, Shinji, Gendo, his brother Uma, and Yui visit the grave of Shinji’s cousin Tobio Rokubungi. Shortly after, a live fire exercise takes place in Sagami Bay with the UN Navy 7th Battle Fleet, Task Force 14 and United Nations 25th Air Force, but is quickly joined by the newly arrived Model-02 and its headstrong pilot, Aska Langley Shikinami, whom Shinji initially mistakes for Asuka much to the former’s annoyance. Ryojidelivers to Uma a suitcase containing a quantum computing chip branded as "Key of Nebuchadnezzar." Gendo and Kozo Fuyutsuki visit the Artificial Evolutionary Laboratory’s lunar compound, Tabgha Base, to inspect the work of its staff, which is noted as being more advanced than what is done on Earth. During Gendo's absence, another systems test simulation is overseen under Yui and directed by Misato. Shinji, Asuka, and Rei kill the simulated entity in a plan devised by Misato Katsuragi. Gendo returns and asks to have diagnostic tests and inspections run on all units.

In an attempt to bring Shinji and his family closer together, Rei prepares a luncheon. At the same time, Mari arrives in Tokyo-3. Later, Unit-04 and the Artificial Evolution Laboratory’s U.S. branch in Homey Airport are destroyed during an activation test of the unit’s fusion core, prompting the North American Combined Security Command to send Unit-03 to Tokyo-3. Due to an international agreement that allows no more than three functioning Evangelions per country at a time, the International Evangelion Project Agency seals away Model-02 and schedules the first official ground test of Unit-03 on the same day as Rei's dinner party; Asuka Shikinami volunteers as the test pilot, to avoid the party. Once Shikinami activates Unit-03, a computer virus possesses the EVA’s CPU and causes it to go on a rampage. Shinji pilots Unit-01 on the ground for the first time as it’s the only means capable of containing the threat, but is reluctant to fight Unit-03 for fear of harming Shikinami, who is still trapped inside. Gendo threatens to order the activation of the Dummy System so that the threat can be eliminated in its totality if he doesn’t, but hearing his father’s cold threat causes Shinji to mentally and emotionally snap. His unit proceeds to beat and dismember Unit-03 violently. Feeling betrayed by what his father threatened and his mother’s inaction, he leaves Project E. Both Misato and Asuka plead with him to stay, but he maintains his decision.

Aska survives but is grievously injured and placed in an intensive care unit within the Artificial Evolution Laboratory. Shinji visits a comatose Shikinami and silently cries, apologizing for his actions toward her. He prepares to unpack his belongings at his new dorm in the preparatory school, but the JSSDF’s Eastern Army 1st Division attacks, so he flees to an emergency shelter. Gendo fails to activate Unit-01 with the automated piloting system, so Asuka takes her Unit-02 and heads out to fight the attacking forces alone. Mari soon joins her in Unit-08. Rei joins the fight with an incomplete Unit-00 and charges the artillery lines shelling the laboratory with an N2 mine. The mine detonates prematurely after being hit before Rei reaches the artillery line. Unit-00 is severely burned and falls over

Upon seeing Rei‘s unit incapacitated and heavily damaged with her still inside, Shinji rushes to Gendo and asks to pilot Unit-01 again. Shinji sorties with a Pallet Rifle and fends off JSDF mechanized infantry and armoured vehicles, but before he can defeat them, Unit-01 runs out of power and shuts down. Unit-01 reactivates in a berserk mode in response to Shinji's rage at the possible loss of Rei. It takes on the remaining forces but is quickly overwhelmed by a renewed barrage, and Shinji uses the EVA to protect Rei’s EVA. Unit-01 then starts levitating as it pulls Unit-00 in its gravitational pull. At that moment, Shinji sees an apparition of Rei, and Unit-01 pulls Unit-00 into its grasp. As they embrace, Shinji thanks Rei for her attempt to reconcile him with his family. She apologizes that it was not realized, but Shinji assures her it is okay. While levitating, Unit-01 generated a massive electromagnetic cyclone levelling much of Tokyo-3 and destroying nearby power grids. Misato, who has been watching the battle, sees that the event is similar to what she saw during the Mt. Markham Disaster. Ritsuko realizes that the EVA has become the most powerful being on Earth, triggering the Hakone Disaster and declares this to be the end of the world.

However, before more damage could be done, an F-2 from the JASSDF shot down Unit-01 and Unit-02 with specialized EMP-tipped Mitsubishi AAM-3 missiles. Both EVAs fall back to the ground, piled onto each other. As Shinji, Rei, and Asuka regain consciousness, they emerge from their respective cockpits, only to be surrounded and arrested by JSSDF soldiers.

Evangelion 01.13: The Multitude’s Tale
SPOILER: Show
After the Hakone Disaster that created widespread civil unrest and upheaval in Japan and much of Northeast Asia, a national conservative and right-wing populist international association known as the Bund mbH gained political influence over the UN Security Council. The United Nations is reorganized into a confederation, political power is centralized, and numerous Balkanized and fractured states in North America, Europe, and East and South Asia join the new union. The new regime moved quickly to consolidate its political and military influence, giving greater power to the UN Forces.

The UN is also heavily influenced by a fascistic international political, intellectual, and commercial association of national conservatives and national populists known as the Bund mbH, primarily through regulatory capture of the Security Council. After the Hakone Disaster, the great, middle, and emerging powers began balkanizing along cultural, political, ethnic, and religious lines in the global upheaval, strife, and civil conflict that quickly followed. The geopolitical impact of the Hakone Disaster allowed various right-wing organizations that are Bund mbH members to gain power through numerous means in the fracturing states and appoint their representatives to the UN Security Council. One of the most significant changes made by the new is the power given to the UN Forces. UN security forces can now monitor, detain, arrest and question anyone they see as a threat to international security. Most significantly, a utopian and scientifically socialist terror group known as NEU-NERV began a hybrid warfare campaign against the UN. NEU-NERV’s goal is “to build a stateless and borderless society governed purely by scientific, rationalistic thought so that humanity can live in enlightenment free from exploitation of his body or mind for the sole purpose of the material accumulation of wealth.”

The story is told in the third person through the perspective of Shinji Ikari. In this new international of unprecedented global strife and upheaval, he is seen widely seen as responsible by the UN security forces. He is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence, being charged with mass man slaughter, property damage, and insurrection. However, the circumstances regarding his conviction and sentencing were controversial due to the lack of corroborating and credible evidence. Asuka and Rei were also detained and sentenced for being an accessory to Shinji’s crimes. However, he is approached by UN Security Council President Fredrick McDaise and now Lt. Gen. Ryoji Kaji, being offered conditional parole if he agrees to serve as mechanized cavalryman of the UN Army 1st Division Mechanized Cavalry Battalion 1. McDaise tells him that if he accepts, he will have all his basic needs provided and a high salary if he agrees to defend the United Nations System and put down any potential threat to it in its entirety. Believing this to be a chance to redeem himself of the destruction he’s made to think he caused, he readily accepts.

Apart from Shinji, personnel are drawn from youth or young adults who are marginalized or impoverished, including those with backgrounds and upbringings in poverty, juvenility, delinquency, orphanages, foster care, and abuse, who all attended or were forced into military reform of high schools. Asuka and Rei are soon released and assigned to separate companies within the battalion.

Shinji begins his tour of duty under Kaji’s command. The story is interspersed with his narratives of his recent experiences and flashbacks of his life before becoming a Designated Pilot of Project E, including his upbringing with his parents and later Misato, his academic life in both preparatory and secondary school, and his friendships with Rei and Asuka. In his new assignment, he has difficulty adjusting and is generally the subject of mockery and bullying amongst his comrades; however, Kaji, even in the strict environment of military discipline, privately mentors and guides Shinji in adjusting to his new environment. He makes time for the boy in particular, seeing him as a son and mentoring and training him in his new life. (Kaji had been romantically involved with Misato Katsuragi and bore a son they named Ryoji Kaji Jr. however, his career and the subsequent Hakone Disaster led him to be raised by Hikari’s older sister Madoka).

About six months after being assigned, to Shinji’s surprise, the Kaji promoted Shinji to an executive officer after becoming a mentor and a leader to the youth in the battalion. Shinji agrees with mixed feelings but promises to give his entire effort to his new role. They primarily play Shogi in their free time and discuss strategy, being allowed to provide suggestions and advice to him, either in terms of information or material items. Ryoji asks Shinji to lead their first major military operation from the front line and tells him the fundamental nature of the enemy they are facing; NEU-NERV. Finally, he is out in command of Operation Herem, a series of manoeuvre warfare strikes on Fifth International and NEU-NERV facilities throughout Eastern Siberia and Northeastern China. He briefs Shinji on his tactical plan and presents it to the UN Security Council for approval. They reject the plan and order them to carry out what has been drafted by the UN Forces General Staff, which would be more casualty-heavy on both sides. Ryoji and Shinji try to negotiate, but they are overruled. They eventually draft a plan secretly to maximize the enemy's losses while minimizing their own. Shinji unexpectedly encounters paternal cousin Hiro during the mission, with his and his unit’s will being broken, and learns from Hiro that they had been part of a penal battalion as part of their punishment for insubordination. Empathetic to his cousin and team’s plight and struggle, he accepts their surrender and offers them a place in the battalion with Ryoji’s approval.

In the days following the beginning of the operation, Shinji begins to quickly realize the extent of the damage and destruction he’s caused and that the public story was that he was still imprisoned for his actions. Knowing of Kaji’s likely disobedience, the Security Council recalls the entire battalion, with the International Criminal Court Court-Martial Chamber charging Kaji with insubordination and disobedience, with which he is sentenced to death. McDaise personally arranges for Shinji to execute Kaji for the boy to prove his loyalty. Shinji initially and vehemently refuses to do so, going as far as defending Kaji. However, McDaise said the Security Council would charge Shinji and those under his command for the same crimes. Fearing the implied threat of death on the youth who served in his battalion, Shinji, though highly reluctant, agrees.

On the day of the execution, Shinji is forced to carry it out by gunshot to the head in full view of his friends and Ryoji’s staff officers. Shinji struggles and hesitates to pull the trigger, but Ryoji, having willingly accepted that he will be executed, quietly smiles at Shinji and nods. Shinji pulls the trigger and begins to break down mentally internally. Too fearful of showing weakness, Shinji quickly leaves Kaji’s cell and returns to his quarters. Once alone in his quarters, Shinji privately sobbed, unwilling to accept what he had just committed. However, he also firms up his resolve, knowing he has a responsibility to fulfill to both McDaise and his battalion. As he was already an executive officer, Shinji was soon assigned command of the regiment. Still, due to his age, he is given the alternate battlefield commission rank of Chief Commissioned Officer. He quickly promoted Asuka to personnel officer, Rei to the operational intelligence officer, Kensuke to the tactical intelligence officer, Toji to logistics officer, and Hikari to the personnel officer. This allows him to consolidate his control over the entire battalion and command it as he sees fit.

Upon taking command, McDaise privately meets with Shinji and explains that failure to achieve the objective necessary tactically would be unacceptable to him and the United Nations System. Unable to cope with the expectations, Shinji desperately tries to contact Misato or his parents over the following days. He is later informed by a reluctant Asuka, who unknowingly gives him falsified evidence that Misato and his parents likely died after the incident.

Around this time, Shinji, his staff officers, and the battalion undergo rigorous and highly physical, psychological, and ideological training to maintain their combat abilities and motivation. They are made to believe their first and only true loyalty is to “defend the shared societal norms, values, and institutions that have been ordained since the emergence of human civilization.”

Shinji, though initially unsure, quickly begins to find a twisted form of solace and stability in what he’s being brainwashed into. Ultimately, the thinking steadily influences his tactical decision-making and command style over his battalion.

The OVA concludes with an epilogue five years later, where Shinji is now leading the armoured assault troops of his battalion on a strike of a NEU-NERV installation in Siberia. Though the installation radios that they surrender, Shinji orders the attack with seemingly no hesitation, quietly reciting Deuteronomy 12:30-31 to himself.

Epic of Evangelion 2.06: The Revelations
SPOILER: Show
The story alternates between the perspectives of Shinji and his childhood friends Asuka and Rei. It is presented as portions of private memoirs written by one and revelations by all three about their upbringings and identities.

Shinji, the product of the “Raising Project” breeding program, was raised by Gendo and Yui Ikari, who tried to keep him safe from his uncle who ran the program. He would spend most of his time at home alone, however, and was raised by his mother Yui when she was available, until meeting Asuka Langley Soryu when he was four, the daughter of computer researcher Kyoko Zepplin Soryu, and later his maternal cousin Rei Ayanami at the age of five. The three would often attend school and hang out with each other at home, mainly at Shinji’s apartment. However, they do not always have a stable or necessarily healthy relationship due to all struggling with issues of loneliness, inadequacy, and low self-esteem brought about by their parents’ distance in their lives.

Five years after the events of Evangelion 01.13: The Multitude’s Tale, Shinji is commanding the UN Army Division 1, Mechanized Cavalry Battalion 1, with Asuka as his operations officer and Rei as his tactical operations officer, both serving as de facto deputy commanding officers and advisors. Shinji has a sibling-like relationship with Rei, Asuka, and the rest of his staff officers and has grown to become highly respected and revered by his personnel. Shinji and his personnel are made to attend rigorous daily training and “theoretical seminars” that often rely on emotional manipulation to maintain the loyalty and obedience of the battalion. Once he finishes his day, Shinji has dinner in a mess with the other person and heads to bed with them soon afterwards. However, he is often plagued by nightmares and dreams in his sleep brought about by years of being forced to commit acts beyond his psychological and moral limits. However, he is also starting to have a reoccurring dream about his “brothers” and “sisters,” individuals he somehow feels he’s known but never met.

When discussing the dreams with his cousin Hiro, Shinji learns that both resulted from a breeding program called the “Raising Project.” Shinji manages to access classified files from the Japanese Prime Minister’s daughter Oyayi Kiryu. In that pursuit, he investigated further, realizing Uma Rokubungi, a prominent geneticist—was head of the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, which ran the program then. Later, Agnes is anonymously provided with leads regarding the status of his parents, precisely evidence they are alive and have been the primary equipment contracts and suppliers of the United Nations Forces for Evangelion mechs. He also learns that he was the final product and culmination of the breeding program’s efforts, being cryptically and metaphorically termed the “he who shall break the seals of wrath, giving to all according to what they have they have done.”

Meanwhile, Asuka has been reading through the files and diaries of her mother, Kyoko Zepplin Soryu, after her day of training and work. The files reveal information about Kyoko’s participation in a privately-run in-vitro fertilization program called the Genetic Enhancement Initiative. Kyoko had agreed to become a volunteer to give birth to a designer baby, resulting in Asuka. Despite this, Kyoko and Asuka have always had a distant relationship, with the former busy with research, instead having Asuka raised by the family’s nanny while consistently placing high academic and fitness expectations on her daughter. She eventually reminisces about when she met Shinji at the age of five, quickly becoming attached to and somewhat possessive of him due to her loneliness. However, these revelations only serve to harden Asuka, who tries to “kill her past.”

Rei also returns to her quarters after her workday, pulling out her photo album of herself with Shinji and his parents. She nostalgically looks through the photos, reminiscing about her upbringing and life after the Hakone Disaster. Born in Vladivostok, Primorsky Krai, Rei was often neglected by her parents, instead being raised by nannies hired by her family. It reveals that her parents placed high academic expectations on her, and she followed in their footsteps as a researcher. Often feeling lonely and inadequate, she is eventually taken in by her aunt Yui and moves to Hakone, Japan. Feeling she is part of a family and accepted for who she is, Rei grows close to Yui, viewing her as a mother figure and teacher. However, she also grows close to Shinji, developing a close brother-sister-like relationship due to their shared upbringings and experiences, but also because of his kindness and compassion towards her. They begin attending school together, with Shinji assuming the role of a protective and caring older brother to Rei. The two begin to look out for each other more and more while also having a close relationship with Yui, who is most present in their lives. Shinji and Rei still maintain close contact, even with the former now being Misato’s legal ward. Meanwhile, Rei eventually moves to the laboratory with Yui as her and Gendo’s work schedules become more demanding. However, she became more familiar with their research and grew closer to Yui and Gendo, eventually agreeing to become their first test pilot for Project E in 2014.

Using the information of his parents' whereabouts, Shinji soon tracks them down, realizing that they are now leading an armament research and production company known as ALT-NERV PLC, enraging Shinji, feeling his parents have been profiting and living comfortably while his battalion is the front lines. Gendo and Yui are shocked and relieved, believing Shinji, Rei, and Asuka died during the Hakone Disaster. Unsure of how to process their reaction, Shinji said he was not ready to begin a relationship with his parents again. Gendo and Yui understand, given his circumstances, agreeing to respect his decision but telling him they are thankful that he is alive.

The plot synopsis concludes with Shinji leading his battalion in battle on the front lines, being designated as the Siege on Urumqi, with his Main Mechanized Cavalry Company 001 being engaged in heavy street fighting to overthrow the East Turkestan government. While piloting, he faces an internal conflict and dilemma over his duties as an officer and his role as a son. He also subconsciously feels more going on behind closed doors than he realizes. As time passes, he begins to slowly question whether he’s truly making the right decisions, with the internal dilemma he faces becoming a slowly growing source of conflict within him.

Evangelion 03.00: Climax
SPOILER: Show
Fourteen years after the worldwide cataclysm called the Lake Inawasiro Disaster, still believed by the public and UN Forces to be the Hakone Disaster, Major Aska Langley Shikinami and Captain Mari Makinami Illustrious, pilots of EVA Models-02’y and -08’B conduct an airborne assault to carry out a clandestine extraction mission of Shinji and Unit-01. When Asuka grabs them and locates them with her Evangelion unit, they are attacked by unknown EVAs used for force protection. Unit 01 suddenly reactivates and hacks the EVAs program ordering them to stand down, after which the rest of the automated defence systems are deactivated and a UN Air Force U4002-01 aircraft lands and airlifts Unit-01 and a comatose Shinji. Uma watches the military operation in his office via. hidden aerial drones and says that everything will soon come to fruition.

Slowly regaining consciousness, Shinji is fitted with an electroshock choker and sent to Colonel Misato Katsuragi, who now leads the UN Integrated Combat Operations Command, Strategic Operations Section, a formation tasked with planning and conducting strategic operations for the UN, especially against the now-designated terror group Geheimgesellschaft Seele. As a group of unknown UAVs attack, Misato orders the deployment of both the SOS headquarters air defence system and EVA Models-02’y and -08’B to intercept, operating under the algorithms used in the COU of the now cannibalized Unit-01. She warns that Shinji will be killed if he pilots any Evangelion units because of the Hakone Disaster, which has also kept the pilots from aging. The occupant of Unit 00, according to Misato, was never found, likely deceased.

Six months later, Shinji is released from custody. Upon returning to his battalion’s headquarters in Jasper, Western Canada, he is greeted in an embrace by Asuka and Rei. Rei takes him to their subterranean complex in Pyramid Mountain. However, Shinji is withdrawn and somewhat unresponsive simply saying that he has duties he needs to attend to. Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father and ALT-NERV’s CEO, informs him that his Evangelion Main Guard-01 was upgraded as per his requests. Shinji after his shift retires to his quarters and office recollecting the traumatic experience of his custody under the UN SOS, but can’t understand his experience and Misato’s demeanour. During the night, Shinji experiences successive dreams and nightmares as he begins to realize that Misato or Ritsuko had ordered his memories of the previous 14 years repressed. He also realizes that they had planned to use him for synchronization testing, as he begins to recall a conversation Misato and Ritsuko had while he was in a vegetative state after his mental breakdown in their custody.

Gendo's wife Yui invites Shinji to play shogi and reluctantly reveals that he is a product of the “Raising Project” breeding program run by the former Japanese Science and Technology Agency. She explains that Uma Rokubungi, Gendo’s brother headed the agency and personally enlisted them as volunteers. She explains however that once she and Gendo realized Uma’s true intentions for Shinji, they legally took custody of him and raised him as their son. She continues by explaining the reason for their absence was due to the threat Uma posed to them as a family, and that by placing him under Misato’s care, it would be dangerous for Uma to try and take custody of or abduct Shinji. Yui hands over the file on the Raising Project to show him the proof behind what she was saying. Shinji is shocked and distraught, disowning both Yui and his father on the spot before leaving in frustration. On his way out, he is alerted by Rei of intelligence reports concerning the timing of NEU-NERV’s first ground test for the Evangelion Unit-13 in 14 days. Shinji then instructs her to alert the UN Forces general staff and Security Council of the development and request permission to deploy. In the room Yui silently sheds a tear at being disowned by her son, muttering to herself that she is sorry for everything.

Shinji and Rei meet with UN Security Council president Fredrick McDaise to discuss the intelligence report received. McDaise green lights Shinji’s proposed operation and that he has the right to neutralize any opponents who may interfere. Meanwhile, back at ALT-NERV headquarters in the rebuilt Tokyo-3, Yui informs her husband of their disowning by Shinji. Gendo sadly replies that he was expecting such from their son and that he had every right to hate them. Yui adds that they were possibly not ready to be parents yet.

On the day of the operation, Shinji and his Main Mechanized Cavalry Company 001 intercept Unit 13 as it begins its ground test, fighting through NEU-NERV’s force protection Evangelion Mark.XX units; being led by a unit designated as Evangelion Mark.09, which Rei mysteriously senses is piloted by a “sixth clone” of her named “tentative name: Rei Ayanami.”. However, they are ambushed by Aska in her Model-02’y and Mari in her Model-08’B. Shinji, finding himself in a three-way battle, angrily charges Aska who tells him to stop before he “damages anything else”. Angered, Shinji unsheathes his unit’s Progressive Sword, blocking Models-02 strikes and sending it flying into a building where it’s at the mercy of Asuka’s Rear Guard-02. When Shinji finally manages to fight in close quarters with Unit 13, it slowly begins to induce a vortex in the clouds above, Shinji slowly begins to realize that the kinetic energy generated from the fight is significantly powering Unit 13. Aska and Mari try stopping Shinji, while Rei and Asuka beg Shinji to retreat realizing it was a trap set up by NEU-NERV. On Uma's orders, Mark.09 prioritizes protecting Unit 13 during its induction of a geomagnetic storm.

Unit 13 rises into the sky, using the power it generated from its fight with Main Guard-01 under Shinji to induce a full-scale geomagnetic storm and severely damage and incapacitate his unit. The clone of Rei inside Mark.09 loses control of her unit due to the geomagnetic storm, which begins to operate autonomously as it tries to shoot down an incoming U4002-01 aircraft being commanded by Colonel Misato Katsuragi as it tries to provide air-to-air and air-to-ground-support. Rei ejects from her unit and Aska short-circuits her unit to incapacitate Mark.09 after being completely overpowered in close-quarters combat. To stop the geomagnetic storm, Mari ejects Shinji's cockpit and orders his forces to retreat for their safety, while she snipes the unit with her positron sniper and downs the unit from the air. Aska later rescues Shinji who is sitting in a fetal position under a tree, lecturing him on running away from his problems before dragging him through the forest, with the clone of Rei following.

Major Aska Langley Shikinami, “tentative name: Rei Ayanami” and Shinji Ikari, still withdrawn, are walking across the outskirts of Tokyo-3. They arrive at a settlement of survivors, and encounter Kodoma Horaki, and Nozomi Horaki, now adults. Kodoma is a cafe owner who has a young daughter, while Nozomi is a professional photographer, and all are friendly to Shinji. Aska expresses frustration with Shinji, force-feeding him. During the event, Shinji’s visor, arm warmers, and neck warmer fall off for the first time showing his scarred eyes, violet-glowing irises, heavily scarred neck, and medically rodded forearms, revealing he has the “Plague of the Eva.” As Shinji slowly recovers, Rei explores the village and settles down, working as a farmer. Shinji meets Ryoji Kaji Jr., the son of Colonel Misato Katsuragi and the late Colonel General Ryoji Kaji, who was believed to have died to prevent the Hakone Disaster but was executed by Shinji 14 years earlier. Rei requires consistent medical attention and supervision and her body begins to suffer multiple organ failure, dying in Shinji's presence.

A U4002-01 arrives to pick up Aska, and Shinji decides to go with her, despite protests from the crew. Shinji is placed in isolation. Meanwhile, Misato is briefed that Geheimgesellschaft Seele’s executive committee is meeting at Cavalry Base on Mt. Markham, Antarctica to inspect and observe a new fusion experiment. In response, Misato ordered the United Nations Strategic Operations Service to prepare for a raid on the base to capture SEELE’s leadership. Before the mission, Aska admits her past feelings for Shinji but states that she "grew up on her own, apart from him", referring to their actual ages being 28 but bodies being stuck at 14 due to the Curse of Eva and Plague of Eva. Shinji apologizes to Asuka for letting his emotions influence his judgement for severely injuring her whilst she was trapped in Unit-03 during the botched ground test. Aska accepts the apology and acknowledges he has matured.

The U4002-01 carrying Aska and Mari is attacked by surface-to-air directed energy weapons and several unmanned aerial vehicles. Asuka and Mari commence an armoured aerial assault and move to destroy the surrounding regiment of Evangelion Mark.07MPs before the experiment commences. However, Model-02’y refuses to continue as its CPU is hacked, forcing Aska to remove her eyepatch, revealing the VMAng.09 entity encoded in her eye, overriding Model-02’y’s programming into a state like Shinji's Unit-01 14 years ago. However the Mark.07 MP’s overpower and main and dismember Model-02’y causing it to subsequently explode. Moments before the explosion, Aska is approached by her "original", revealing she is a clone of the Shikinami series, barely ejecting in time. Meanwhile, the U4002-01 is flown in a controlled into the ground after its systems are hacked by Seele.

Realizing they crashed close to Cavalry Base, Misato and her flight deck crew climb their way out of the rubble and make their way to the base. Ritsuko and Misato shoot dead several guards and protective security personnel successfully making their way to Keel Lorenz and the executive committee hiding in a subterranean bunker. Keel reveals that he expected the UNSOS to come after them and that SEELE intended to trap and destroy them at Cavalry Base. Realizing how easily the intelligence was leaked to the UN, Misato and her crew realize that Keel is telling the truth and that they are indeed trapped. However, before Keel could proceed, everyone present felt and heard the ground shaking above them. Sakura and Midori Kitakami find three companies of chrome-plated Evangelions, led by Main Guard-01 engaged in close-quarters combat with the Evangelion Mark.07MPs. Upon joining Sakura and Midori, Misato looks solemnly at Shinji’s Main Guard-01 leading the formation, implying her regret for how she initially treated him. Mari in Model-08’B joins Main Guard-01, providing the latter cover while it takes on SEELE’s forces. Inside Main Guard-01, Shinji is piloting his unit while in a trance-like state, mumbling repeatedly to himself about his need to fulfill his “mission”.

In the mental realm, Shinji is seen fighting against being swarmed by his classmates in his old preparatory school with Shinji barely winning, Then Gendo and Yui show Shinji and explain to Shinji the impact of the Mt. Markham Disaster. Shinji then descends into a laboratory where he finds his “brothers” and “sisters” being examined, being children bred from the “Raising Project”. As a result, Shinji says that he rejects his past, going on a rampage and destroying the medical equipment in the laboratory. Meanwhile, in the real world, Misato returns with a now captured Keel Lorenz and the executive committee to help rescue other personnel who were injured or trapped in the debris, which allows Shinji to continue pressing his ground attack on Seele’s forces. Shinji begins re-experiencing various memories from differing realities, vaguely realizing that he has been in his cycle of inadequacy and struggle countless times before. Shinji then enters Kaji’s office, who tells Shinji he’s done right by his personnel, that he should forgive himself for his actions, saying he has to live for himself, not for others, and thanks Shinji for serving alongside him.

Shinji begs Kaji to stay, wanting more clarification from him, and to guide how to move forward in his life. Kaji disappears from the mental realm with Shinji awakening from his trance-like state into the real world. Realizing he destroyed all of SEELE’s forces in the process, Shinji gets out from Main Guard-01, with Aska and Mari’s units recovered and SEELE’s personnel surrendering. Shinji proceeds to find Misato, Ritsuko, and Aska, alongside Misato’s flight deck crew gathered around his unit. Shinji then jumps onto the ground, staring face to face with Misato. Shinji stands before Misato, Ritsuko, and the flight deck crew, however, he is soon flanked by other armed pilots. Misato tries to thank Shinji for his help. However, his forces immediately detain and beat Misato, Ritsuko, and Aska into submission.

Evangelion 193.33: At Her Mercy, At His Judgement
SPOILER: Show
Misato, Ritsuko, and Aska are now in the remand of Shinji’s formation, being held in a maximum security military prison inside the Pyramid Mountain Complex. Misato and Ritsuko are questioned extensively and held in confinement, while Aska is kept under house arrest in Jasper, Western Canada. Inside the facility, Misato begins to realize just how strict the discipline in the battalion is and what they’ve endured over 15 years.

She flashes back to when she was questioning Shinji after recovering him during Operation U.S. Misato told Shinji with a straight face that he was the one who triggered the Hakone Disaster leading to worldwide upheaval, strife, and conflict, destroying the entire international system; however, she knew the evidence of such was not conclusive and that Shinji wasn’t primarily to blame. After threatening and physically punishing Shinji with the electroshock collar placed on him, Shinji readily agrees out of fear and terror. However, he eventually finds that Rei and Asuka are also being detained under the same pretences he was. The following day, Shinji cooperates in the “synchronization exercises” being run by Ritsuko.

However, Shinji begins to emotionally and mentally break, unable to cope with his circumstances, leading him to suffer a mental breakdown. The situation gets so bad that Aska is forced to intervene and forcibly restrain him. She physically disciplines Shinji, criticizing him for acting like a spoiled child. While forcibly restrained, Aska takes Shinji to a final round of “synchronization testing.” Seeing how mentally and emotionally broken he is, Misato orders the testing to be called off. Shinji is then restrained to a hospital bed in the infirmary. He overhears that this was planned and that they needed to emotionally and mentally break him to retire data on his total synchronization rate with the Evangelion. He also overhears that they had to suppress his memories of the past 15 years to maximize the results. Upon hearing this, Shinji is enraged and tries to attack both women before he is sedated.

Sometime later, he is released from custody, mentally and emotionally scarred from his experience. He is transported by plane back to the Pyramid Mountain Complex, where his battalion is garrisoned. After recalling the events, Misato is visited by Asuka and Shinji, who’ve entered to interrogate her. She learns that his regiment is preparing for Operation Mushashi, what is hoped to be the final battle to destroy NEU-NERV; She also learns that Mari was serving as an informant and mole for Shinji’s battalion. Misato tells Shinji he needs to “understand” the position she was in and move past what she did, saying what he does is no different; Shinji angrily counters by saying that what he does is entirely different, is frank with himself about what he and his battalion feel they need to sacrifice to win. Meanwhile, Aska is confined to the nearby penal colony of what was Jasper and is forced to do arduous physical labour; however, she frequently disrespects and disobeys the correctional staff. The following day, Asuka inspects the penal colony and crosses paths with Aska, her clone.

Upon crossing paths with Aska, Asuka singles her out for “failing to meet work quotas” and resisting “correctional authority” and proceeds to pull her aside to be “privately disciplined.” In her office in the Pyramid Mountain complex, Asuka confronts Aska about her nature as a clone, seeing her as heresy and mockery of herself and her identity, only to understand that Aska is just as lonely as she was in the world. Asuka allows Aska better living conditions and makes her role less arduous. Meanwhile, back in Misato’s cell, Shinji is still confronting Misato and now Ritsuko in their role of Operation U.S., the latter being the one who proposed the operation and pressured Misato into carrying it out despite her objections. Realizing this, Shinji angrily pulls his gun on Ritsuko and threatens to execute her summarily. However, Misato pulls him into her embrace before he can pull the trigger, triggering him to break down emotionally.

However, after a long embrace, Misato finds Shinji limp in her arms, where her prisoner scrubs are stained with blood and realizes that Shinji is not conscious, seeing that he’s bleeding from his mouth.

Evangelion 306.33
SPOILER: Show
Shinji is rushed to the military hospital within the Pyramid Mountain Complex where he is in a coma and placed in an ICU. Misato is allowed to stay by his side under supervision. Over the next week, Shinji begins to recover but is still physically weakened. He tells Misato that the “Plague of the Eva” is likely causing blood vessels to tear in his body due to extreme muscular hypertrophy. She apologizes saying that it was because of the fact she and UNSOS psychologically and physically pushed him beyond his limits in their custody that he’s now suffering. Though hesitant to accept her apology, he removes his cataract visors, arm, and neck warmers to reveal significant scarring and surgical impacts meant to keep his condition in check. He adds that the Plague of the Eva cost Asuka her left eye and right arms, leading to both being cyber-synthetically replaced. He continues by saying that the Plague of the Eva is carried by all the pilots in his battalion.

Meanwhile, Asuka is still coming to terms with her clone Aska, who she still sees as a defilement of her and her identity while also feeling some form of pity for her. She eventually heads to Aska’s cell to settle the issue, where she confronts the clone. Asuka proceeds to question her for information, physically assaulting her out of anger, resentment, and jealousy. Aska tries to fight back only to be nearly choked to death by Asuka with the latter’s right arm, which she realizes is cybernetic due to the strength of the grip. Aska also notices a red glow beneath Asuka’s medical eye patch. Asuka is hallucinating, choking an apparition of her mother out of anger and resentment for the life she has. Aska remarks how they are both alone in this world and have never been able to find happiness or meaning in themselves. Asuka desists and leaves the cell, on the verge of an emotional breakdown.

Meanwhile, Misato is by Shinji’s bedside and decides to properly apologize to him, only to be rebuffed. Shinji decides to tell Misato how he honestly felt leaving with her when he was still her ward, saying he felt he could never connect with her, and at times didn’t feel emotionally safe around her. But because he felt she was the only person who felt like she legitimately cared and was there for him, he tried to reach out to her after the Hakone Disaster for help. The fact that she didn’t respond even though he later realized she was likely alive left him feeling betrayed. However, Misato reveals that she was briefed that he died in the Hakone Disaster and that it was through an anonymous tip that she found he was alive 14 years later. She adds that even though Shinji triggered the Hakone Disaster, it was another geomagnetic storm at Lake Iwashiro that destroyed the worldwide power grid. Misato explains that because both incidents happened so close together, it was difficult to determine who triggered the incident leading Shinji to become the scapegoat for the public. She acknowledges that what she’s done is unforgivable, but wants Shinji to know she is genuinely guilt-ridden for everything she put him through in the past 17 years. As she is about to leave, Shinji asks her to stay by his bedside for a bit longer, to which she agrees.

Over the following week, Shinji begins to recover, with Misato helping and guiding him. The charges against her, Ritsuko, and Aska are dropped, with the latter two returning to the Strategic Operations Section. However, Misato uses her paid time off to help Shinji recover and serve as a tactical advisor. Appreciating her help, the two slowly rebuild their relationship from 14 years ago. Misato helps Shinji reform his battalion’s strategies and tactics for the upcoming Operation Musashi.

However, is skeptical of what she sees as Misato’s influence in the battalion. She confronts Misato and Shinji, demanding Misato’s true intentions regarding her recent actions. Misato explains that she’s only trying to help Shinji in preparation for Operation Musashi. Asuka doesn’t believe the explanation and accuses Misato of using Shinji to make both believe that she’s changed. Misato agrees somewhat, stating she’s doing what she feels she can to make up for the years of maltreatment she put them both through. Realizing Misato is genuine about her intentions, Asuka backs down and leaves.

A few days later Shinji, Asuka, and Rei attend an emergency meeting of the Bund mbH’s executive committee in Jerusalem. Fredrick McDaise who has been president of the Steering Committee of the United Nations Security Council for 15 years, has been the Bund’s executive chairman in that same timeframe. The committee was called to discuss how to address the growing possibility that the Bund mbH could be charged with negligent accessory to causing the Hakone Disaster by the United Nations Investigative Agency. Shinji realizes that the Bund mbH instigated the coup in Japan, knowing that NEU-NERV would rush to conduct a fusion reaction test with potentially devastating results. McDaise said that Shinji was meant to be a public scapegoat through his triggering of the Hakone Disaster, due to the media blackout at the time and ensuing chaos as a result of the coup and the incident. Enraged, Shinji confronts McDaise before fleeing the meeting with Asuka and Rei.

When he arrives back at the Pyramid Mountain Complex, he informs his staff officers, Misato, Ritsuko, and Aska of the developments regarding the actual nature of the Hakone Disaster. However, Misato can tell that Shinji is in emotional turmoil, having essentially been fighting under a lie for the past 15 years and that he was used by the Bund mbH for their political gains.

Meanwhile, Uma who was listening in on the Bund mbH’s meeting in Jerusalem realizes Shinji’s emotional and mental turmoil from the event. He uses the development as a means to expedite his “final plan”. He calls up an individual over the phone, telling them to implement the “expediting protocols” for the “final plan.” He orders a company of NEU-NERV Evangelions to attack a signals intelligence base belonging to the UN Army Division 1, Mechanized Cavalry Battalion 1, Shinji’s battalion, which will serve as a distraction while they send a covert death squad to execute Shinji’s closest.

Evangelion 500.00: Resolution
SPOILER: Show
Uma Rokubungi’s NEU-NERV has been in a violent guerrilla war with the UN Army Division 1, Mechanized Cavalry Battalion 1. A NEU-NERV mechanized cavalry company finds a signals intelligence base their enemies use. Still, the battalion arrives to defend the ground, killing all NEU-NERV personnel, including those that surrendered. Shinji’s staff officers, Rei and friend Kensuke return from a reconnaissance operation, informing Shinji that NEU-NERV’s leadership will gather at Alert, Nunavut, for a “major weapons test.” Due to the sheer number of anti-air, anti-personnel and anti-armour defences, Shinji plans to launch a high-altitude airborne assault using their Evangelions. Still, later that night, NEU-NERV dispatches a team of assailants to infiltrate the Pyramid Mountain Complex, killing Shinji’s cousin Hiro.

Shinji, accompanied by Asuka and Rei, briefly leaves to find the waypoint the assailants came through. While searching for information on the militia's movements, Shinji kills a NEU-NERV fighter in self-defence and finds the individual was caretaking a younger clone similar to the pilot of Evangelion Mark.09 in Evangelion 3.00: Climax, whom Rei befriends and later names Muttsu, in honour of “tentative name: Rei Ayanami.” Later on their journey, the trio find NEU-NERV militiamen who were also deemed defective and killed by their fellow soldiers and encounter a defect named Tetsuwan, who informs them that the assailants had been shadowing and stalking his forces in the Rocky Mountains for months. Joined by Tetsuwon, Shinji’s group finds where the assailants are hiding, but all three are captured and brought before a holographic projection of Uma with a warning before being released. Upon returning to the Pyramid Mountain Complex, Shinji orders that preparations for the assault be expedited before their operations are compromised completely.

During a meeting with Misato, his parents Yui and Gendo, Shinji requests their tactical and logistical support, respectively, while also lobbying the UN Forces General Staff to approve of his new timeline for the operation; they hesitantly agree to his plan but war him against being too reactive in his decision making. After extensive and secret preparations to stage an assault, a full flight of 12 Type-E Transport Aircraft carried three companies of Evangelion to undertake the airborne assault. Advance Guard-00, Main Guard-01, and Rear Guard-02 are the first to land, followed by the remaining units.

Upon landing, however, they immediately come under heavy fire but quickly dispose of the Mark.XX units due to being uncoordinated and caught off guard. Shinji and his forces manage to breach the defensive perimeter encircling and storming Alert, with Shinji intending to kill Uma, only to find he had been led into a trap with Uma planning to use Shinji and his unit to induce a worldwide geomagnetic storm. Uma tells Shinji that he envisions him as the precursor and leader of a new world order, explaining that he intends to destroy the remnants of the old world so that he can rebuild society to rebuild society in his image. He says that he lobbied for the Raising Project to breed an individual who could serve as the judge and leader of the human civilization he envisioned; hence Shinji being “he who shall break the seals of wrath, giving to all according to what they have done.” In a rage, Shinji beat Uma mercilessly, unwilling to continue living as a servant to anyone. However, as he is beating Uma, begins to hallucinate, finding himself beating a teenage Uma in high school. He follows him through moments of his early life, where he witnesses Uma’s and Gendo’s upbringing. Shinji realizes he is no different from his father or Uma, willing to do whatever they can to protect what little they have in the world. Realizing the weight of his actions, Shinji is snapped out of his trance, realizing his forces have been surrounded and encircled. Uma weakly tells Shinji that the “weapons test” is imminent and that he has limited time to act and “choose” before he falls unconscious.

Upon returning to the battlefield in Main Guard-01, Shinji finds Model-02y and Model-08a, piloted by Aska and Mari, respectively, reinforcing Shinji’s battalion as they are encircled. Meanwhile, Misato and her flight-deck crew on board a U4002-01 military aircraft provide air-to-ground and tactical support. Although the reinforcements, however, Shinji and Misato’s forces are numerically overwhelmed. At the same time, a fusion reactor underneath Alert begins to induce a massive geomagnetic storm, further complicating the situation.

As the Mechanized Cavalry Battalion 1 and Strategic Operation Section are slowly overtaken by Evangelion Mark.XX units, Shinji inverts the fusion core on his unit, allowing it to take on the enemy Evangelions. He orders everyone to retreat while he stays behind to fight the Evangelion Mark.XX units. He proceeds to take on waves of them, succeeding in destroying most of them before turning to destroy the fusion reactor. However, the ailment he carries, called the “Plague of the Eva,” starts to cause him to bleed as he conquers the fusion reactor internally. The fusion reactor explodes, sending Main Guard-01 flying with Shinji in it. Asuka and Rei dismount from their units and race to rescue him from the cockpit. They pull Shinji out, soon joined by Shinji’s staff officers, Misato, and Ritsuko. Shinji’s parents, Gendo and Yui, arrived as fast as they could.

Grievously injured, Shinji weakly smiles and thanks his staff officer for being with him for the past 15 years. He then thanks Misato and his parents for protecting him, apologizing for how he treated them in the past before “seemingly succumbing” to his injuries.
