Whenever Asuka is portrayed as an adult, she always reminds me of Misato. I don't know if it's because the protagonists of NGE are alike (episode 26's three main cases make this pretty clear). It could also be because of how they behave around Shinji and Kaji, respectively. Or it could just be their overall appearance. I don't know, but it works and I like it (Shikinami, in particular, would probably turn out to be a bit more serious than Misato, though).

Though you're right that the Rebuilds didn't have or take the time to establish the facade layer * insert the usual complaints about how Rebuild should totally have been a 7 part OVA series with cut CR material and the timeskip movie *

Except that in Shikinami's case, she didn't had the "fake extrovert" facade, if you remember in Ha she spent all her free time in school in her corner playing her Wonderswan and abrasively pushed back anyone who tried to talk to her (even kicking a boy's face when he tried to talk to her), only starting to get a little close to Shinji and Hikari just before everything went to hell, the contrary of Soryu in NGE who had an entire fanclub wooing her to her delight (because it temporarily soothed her sense of self-worth).
And with the revelation of her past and origin in Shin, we know the reason of this difference: since she was "build" and raised as a weapon her whole life, she very probably only grew up around NERV personnel, with enough normalcy to have her function in society, but still not enough to have her integrate, her time at Tokyo-3 was probably the first time in her life where she had a truly normal school life.

I think you nailed it. There's another intriguing similarity between them. Both strive to convey a "perfect image" to others, that derives from their true self. Misato thinks she needs to behave like a "good" and capable woman all the time, while Asuka believes she needs to be strong and independent to justify her own existence. In short, the two characters rely on social masks to communicate with others.
Most Evangelion characters are built using the same "narrative blocks". It is possible to find parallels between Asuka/Ritsuko and Shinji/Asuka. That said, the similarities between her and Misato are particularly strong.

It's impossible to deny that Soryu shares stronger similarities with Misato than Shikinami. This is mainly because these characters were simplified in NTE. The real good play here is that at first Shikinami's differences from Soryu in Ha looks like a consequence of the characters being streamlined in NTE, then Shin reveals Shikinami's past which cast her actions in Ha on a completely different light and explains her past behavior.

I agree for the parallels with EoE Misato at end of Q and in Shin, IIRC it was already noticed in the forum at the end of Q.

That's true. Shikinami's behavior comes from her background. It makes sense. She acts differently from Soryu because their lives were different. However, I'm inclined to believe that these changes were only made to work around NTE's limitations. It would be impossible to successfully bring Soryu to the tetralogy format. I mean, she's a character who takes advantage of NGE's runtime and scope. It's important for the audience to see her social mask slowly being shattered, among other things. That's why Khara decided to create something new while working on HA, I believe. Several layers of Asuka's drama were discarded or reworked. Her transition from NGE to NTE received a lot of attention from the staff (more than Misato's, to be honest).
Asuka ended up being so important in Shin that she's the center piece of the tetralogy's greatest plot twist (aside from the time-skip, maybe). We were all expecting Ayanami to be a clone and the movies weren't even trying to hide her true nature. Shikinami, though? Truly unexpected, to be honest. They were clearly going for it since the beginning.

That plot twist really didn’t hit me like they probably wanted it to. My only reaction was “huh, I guess that’s what they’re doing for her backstory.”

I mean, I’m biased. Asuka is my favorite character from NGE by far so I just find it difficult to relate to this new version of her that’s missing everything I liked about the original.

I'm not crying, it's just really rainy inside. I blame climate change.
