Eva has to only make 385 million more yen to equal Shin Godzilla as Anno's biggest film.
It's holding well so that should happen buuuuuuuut Tokyo is requesting another lockdown so Covid doesn't become a major factor over the upcoming holiday Golden Week so we'll have to see.

Oof, instead of limiting operational time to 8:00PM, movie theaters will be completely closed during the emergency period. That's gonna be a MAJOR blow to new releases like Detective Conan since it usually thrives in Golden Week.

Damn Detective Conan got rekt hard, the next movie will open in the summer and I'm sure there will be a bit of fatigue by then with the 2 movies being so close to each other. Shin overall didn't have it so bad.

I'm curious what this closure - all theaters closed from April 25 to May 11 with a possible extension to lockdown - does for the international release of the film. Arguments could be made this will either expedite getting the film out in other parts of the world OR slow things down.

Khara & the team were smart to get Eva out when they did. They had five weeks to soar without competition. Even without a pandemic mucking things up very few movies are lucky to have that.

Well going by the likes of Demon Slayer and Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel III we can expect absolutely no change in the usual pattern of release.

On a slightly positive note, the new Gundam film is having it's BD released the same day it comes out in theatres, which is something new to see...provided it doesn't get delayed again. Which now it probably will.

I imagine that the theatrical release will for sure be delayed now. Sadly, I can see them delaying the BD release too, but we will see.

As for Eva's release in West, probably doesn't have any effect one way or the other. But I've been wrong many times over the past year in this matter, so who knows.
I mean, predictability is the central attraction and the narrative hook that we've all come to expect from the Evangelion franchise. How come Anno can't realize this? Twice? - FreakyFilmFan4ever

Since the Blu-ray is an on-site exclusive instead of a regular release (meaning it's only sold on theaters), it's definitely getting delayed too. Doraemon also had a bad case of burnout last year with two films being released five months apart (New Nobita's Dinosaur on August, Stand By Me 2 on December) and both severely underperformed.

I expect this to change absolutely nothing one way or the other for international fans.

8 billion yen milestone crossed exactly on its 50th day of release! :penpen_bravo:

As yet another lockdown hits Tokyo and Osaka regions over the Golden Week and perhaps beyond, the final BO forecast is once again lowered from 9 to 8.5 billion yen, but it's still a smash hit all things considered.

On a brighter note, Shin Eva is coming back on IMAX and 4DX theaters in several areas not affected with the lockdown from Golden Week, seems like the demand for both premium formats are still high to the point of reviving them for extra holiday numbers considering Detective Conan and the new Rurouni Kenshin film are currently playing too.

This is cool as hell, even though it's because of circumstances relating to the pandemic.

As of close of day yesterday (in Japan), Evangelion 3.0+1.0 had made a total of 8.23 billion yen in Japan.
Shin Godzilla finished it's theatrical run in Japan with a total of 8.25 billion yen.

So after today Hideaki Anno will have a new highest grossing film.

The film is also doing remarkably well during the Golden Week holidays despite some areas still being in lockdown. It's selling four times as many tickets now as it did the week prior. It'll be a struggle but maybe 10 billion is a possibility.

With 8.27 billion yen, it has officially surpassed Shin Godzilla as the highest-grossing film in his career yet! :penpen_bravo:

The film also continues to perform well even during weekdays thanks to the revived IMAX/4DX screenings on Golden Week holidays. While 10 billion yen is possible (and I sincerely hope so), I think 9-9.5 billion yen is the safest bet for now.

However, back when they announced the film is leaving premium screens earlier in April, there was a considerable BO numbers jump as fans were coming back to see it, I'm sure the same will happen once they announced the date of the film leaving the big screen, anything is possible!

While it doesn’t show much of substance, the screenshot in that tweet is technically a spoiler, right?

Yes that is indeed considered a spoiler by the rules as it is from a trailer released after March 8.
