What does the "friend" functionality do?

The "foe" functionality acts as a mute (and block?) list, but what exactly does the "friend" functionality do?

I believe you can use it when filtering PMs.

Also, it can be used to highlight posts by friends (opposite of mute), but I think this depends on the theme - which I didn't know when I implemented our theme, so it may do nothing in our case!

For our first several years it didn't exist on this forum, not until the BBcode was updated.
