The robots in Rossum’s Universal Robots, the play that coined the word “robot,” weren’t even mechanical. Etymologically, “robot” connotes forced labor, and the timing of the word’s inception with industrialization and automation led to the term being conflated with mechanical objects. You could think of manmade creatures like Frankenstein as proto-robots, and Evangelion as a homecoming to the word’s original meaning.

I am not a native Japanese speaker. Was this just a passing comment or something in a context that would warrant the backlash? At the end of the day, it is a big spectacle of giant robots punching each other, among many other things.
