For those who don't know about the different kind of Wraiths, here's the end page of Volume 1 of the Wraith Arc that list them:
SPOILER: Show
Image

Interestingly, their power levels are named after the different Buddhist levels of enlightenment, that's why the more evolved they are and the less humanoid and more "abstract" they look.

And the story of the manga expends further on their powers: we though from the TV Series that they were just a bunch of cyber-old men with lasers, but they actually have some seriously vicious powers up their sleeves.

I'm glad they decided to develop the Wraiths a lot more as villains, especially since it seems that they'll be the main replacement for witches throughout the concept movie and whatever sequel we get after that.

Waiting for the next installment is suffering.

Meanwhile in Persistence land...  SPOILER: Show
The girl standing in the gloom is close to Sayaka's height, though older by a year. A wide sleeved monk's habit in field gray shrouds her body. Its hood overshadows icy eyes and short silver hair, ragged at the ends from being self-cut without the aid of a mirror. A leather belt with cartridge pouches rings her waist. The steel buckle bears an image of a soul gem and a motto, GÖTTIN MIT UNS.

“I'll wait here,” the stranger replies. She speaks not with the cliched haughtiness of Prussian nobility, which she is, but with a cold air of distrust.

Wait, does that mean that you use that theory that magical girls are actually ageless? Because Prussia as a kingdom ceased to exist at the end of WWI.

Well, I have a link of the five chapters so far translated in English, but I don't know if I can post them without breaking the rules, so better send me a PM if you want them.

But yes, the Wraiths get enormously expanded in that story (it better, with a name like "Wraith Arc"!), and while they don't have the mind-screwing characteristics of the Witches, they can be really cunning bastards.
As a bonus, it also expends on Homura's new powers (with a new one that we really don't expect) and why the Incubators decided to start their plan to observe the Law of Cycles even though Kyubey said at the end of the TV series that the Incubators don't believe Homura's story.

It's OK, I ended up tracking it down myself. It really does shed a dark light on the existence of magical girls in the new universe, since Wraiths are as bad as, if not worse than witches and the reward they yield also seems to fluctuate between the generous amount shown in the show and Grief Seed-levels.

Wraith Arc spoilers  SPOILER: Show
And then there's their ability to steal abilities from the previous universe like Time Manipulation, and their human copies....

I'm going to be good and not spoil it.

Re: Wraith Arc, don't take away too much from it. It's based on a scrapped pre-Rebellion storyline and odds are it won't be treated as canon by the next installment.

^Meh, I just like the idea that the world isn't all candy canes and butterflies after Madoka's wish. I do think that some parts of the Wraith Arc will linger for the next installment since

Wraith Arc/Concept Movie spoilers  SPOILER: Show
The Moksha Wraith (aka the big bad of the Wraith Arc) is seen fighting Oktavia in one of the concept movie camrip shots.

Well, even if there isn't the transformation into Witches, still the magical girls have to live a life of fighting, so few of them will live that long.
Also for the Wraith seen in the Concept Movie
Wraith Arc/Concept Movie spoilers  SPOILER: Show
that's not a Moksha, that's a Satori Wraith.

Now for the Wraiths' powers,
Wraith Arc spoilers  SPOILER: Show
personally I don't think that they can steal powers from another universe, but that Godoka simply sealed Homura's time powers (probably so the Incubators won't believe her when she claims that she comes from another timeline, hell Kyubey even notes that no one ever got time traveling powers, meaning that it was sealed from everyone in this new universe), and that the Wraith could access it when it stole Homura's powers, and so Homura will probably get it back when she'll kill that Wraith (she was shown with her black bow in Rebellion, meaning that somehow she took her powers back), which will also probably how the Incubators will realize that Homura might had been telling the truth and start their plan to control Godoka.

On a side-note, I'm the only one who think that Mami's face when Homura shows her her pipe-bombs to be pure gold?

Eva has resin kits of teenage girls wrapped in bandages/ribbons laying prone with their private parts exposed ready for some action :cringe: I have a bunch of modelling catalogues that display those kits in all their "glory", and always wonder whether those pictures would count as child pr0n.

Worst is that some people apparently bought and built those kits to then put their "stuff" on it and take pictures (there's a few of those that float around the web) :vomit: . Mostly of Rei of course.

I think I prefer the lingerie sets.

The BD version of the revised concept movie has escaped into the wild, and it is glorious.

And just to show that I haven't been totally lazy...  SPOILER: Show
Twelve years ago, she abandoned her humanity and consigned herself to a life of unending battle. Magic and misery became constant companions, twin burdens shouldered to protect Madoka from their crushing weight. Everything else fell by the wayside. She gave all to the war and lost sight of the peace that was meant to follow.

Now the magic dwells in both of them. The misery is something they both bear witness to. And Homura, who made today's arrangements to give Madoka respite from these things, has been defined by the same for so long that her only alternative is an empty pretense.

Not a full movie, but a short preview of what they're currently planning.

I really love the visual ideas of this concept movie, but it's SHAFT, so that was to be expected.
SPOILER: Show
The stone faces reminded me of Rahxephon. The ballet aspect of Tutu.

In the end I liked Rebellion a lot, despite it making me question it's existence (I mean, yeah... It get it. Madoka is a money pressing machine). So I'm looking forward to wherever they steer the franchise next. Whenever they will, it might not be good or necessary, but it'll at least be interesting. And if Madoka is enough of a brand to convince money givers to realize another installment, I'll be glad to see for which story the creators use the franchise as a vehicle.

How important to the continuity of the series are the two compilation movies?

I want to know whether I can safely skip them when buying Blurays...

They add a few scenes, cut a few scenes, and replace parts of the soundtrack with new music. I don't think you'll miss anything essential if you go straight from the TV series to Rebellion.

Edit: might as well mention a new chapter of The Persistence of Memory went up over the weekend.

I'm informed via Discord that today marks 10 years to the day that Madoka ended. Surprising to think it's been that long since this show aired!
