This keeps happening, so there is money in it. I still doubt khara is even considering it, but if the movie were to face another possible delay...

Theatrical + streaming still depends on theaters.

Different worlds. Different stories.
Can't really be compared.

Warner Brothers made this big move because they need to boost members on their HBO Max streaming service. It's the best of the new streaming services (imo) but is trailing Disney+ & Netflix by tens of millions of members for a couple reasons (namely lack of brand recognition) so this is a good way to really kick up their membership next year.

Khara doesn't own a streaming service.

And WB is also doing this now because the US is likely going to trail behind the rest of the world in Covid recovery because we're a mess full of selfish people.
Recovery in the US in 2021 is going to be very staggered. And only one movie has made over $50 million in the US since March.

Japan has a movie right now breaking box office records every week. Despite the risks there's currently a market there for going to theaters.

Delay is very slim..

Eva truly is a story that repeats.
This is a funny reversal of early in the year when some of us here were saying the movie was going to be delayed and others were saying "Never gonna happen."

The only thing I *could* see happen was, if Netflix would drop a big chunk of cash to get the streaming rights for all of NTE outside of Japan, starting at the moment Shin is out of Theaters in Japan.
If NGE was a big streaming hit for them, I could see Netflix doing that for them and perhaps Khara taking the deal, as the Japanese Theatrical run is in the clear and the money to be made oversees is not that big of a deal, considering the post COVID world we live in. Also, piracy will happen in Japan, of course, but we know that there's enough Eva fans who will buy the BD nevertheless.

^ THAT could very well be what happens. Theatrical in Japan in January. Streaming everywhere else in April, May or June.

And then maybe a year or two after that a GKids disc release of the four Rebuilds.

That scenario is a hundred times more likely than being delayed or skipping a Japanese theatrical release altogether.

You know, I'm, actually not sure who approached who with the Netflix deal for NGE. I don't know if Netflix approached Khara with streaming opportunities, or if Khara approached Netflix with Eva licenses. The fact that NGE on Netflix was a global release makes me think it was part of the international awareness Khara was trying to create for the Eva franchise, kinda like how they screened Avant 1 of Shin Eva in multiple countries. If that's the case, then I would think Khara started the negotiations with Netflixm, and not Netflix themselves.

But I could be wrong, and it may not matter in the end anyway. Regardless of how that transpired before, it can most likely happen again for Shin Eva. Also, it's not like a Netflix release would delay a possible Blu-ray release. Funimation's lack of DVD/Blu-ray production for the first two films has already thrown enough wrenches into old expectations.

All I want from GKids is rainbow credits for the English release of NTE. It's such a low bar to pass that I should even be worried about GKids missing it, and I'm still shocked that Funimation completely dropped the ball on that in the first place.

Hell yeah, man! Hell yeah!

I forget if this happened at a con I was actually attending, or if I heard it through the grapevine of con buddies, but I seem to remember a story about a Funimation Q&A panel where Mike McFarland was asked about why the rainbow was cut from the end credits of Evangelion 1.11 and Evangelion 2.22. (Eva Q wasn't yet released; possibly not even in Japan.)

Mike responded with "What rainbow credits?"

The rainbow credits made their way into Funi subsequent release of Eva Q after that Q&A panel.

Like, is it really too much to ask that English release producers watch through the whole movie before attempting to create a definitive localization of it? I know this is just end credits, but this actually disgusts me. Would their release of Weathering With You also have excised the rain drop animations from the end credits? (God, am I ever thankful for the GKids release for that film.) Just how much of the original film were we missing in Funi versions of Japanese films? This isn't the 80's anymore. There's no longer a need or desire to bastardize foreign films.

To be fair, yes.
But I'm probably more convinced than most here of how much money this could make. Especially with how obsessive, passionate and willing to spend money (Japanese) anime fans apparently are.

I already saw Japanese tweets in the vein of "Let's make Shin Eva a big success, let it make more money than Demon Slayer", I'm sure that'd happen with streaming to some extent.

If there were a delay I think it'd come from above. Closure of cinemas decided by government or something. I don't think ome will happen but wouldn't be surprised either.

Also Netflix idea sounds pretty cool, but I hope if the film is gonna come soon, it's not April. I'll be busy as shit.

I think April for Europe and the Americas is being upbeat. I think the eventual run or streaming in Western countries could be more of a Summer deal. End of June has been a big time for Eva - 2.0, when NGE went global on Netflix, end of June was usually when Khara made a Rebuild announcement in the Great Pause after 3.0, the original release of 3.0+1.0 - and is a similar timetable of how anime films reach international audiences pre-pandemic. But we’re in a new world so who knows.

On the bright side no matter what December 4, 2021 you’ll have seen the final film months ago! And undoubtably seen it multiple times. It’s just all about staying safe and positive through these next few months.

June would sound better already.

I'll try staying positive, but actually this
no matter what December 4, 2021 you’ll have seen the final film months ago!

might not happen, as much as I wanna believe it. :( Even a january release doesn't guarantee the bluray comes this year, even though 3.0's came so fast. And alternate options might or might not come to fruition.

I just hope I have the time the movie deserves when it is available to me.

I read up a little on safety in cinemas, and found this:

https://celluloidjunkie.com/2020/10/19/cj-analysis-the-number-of-covid-19-outbreaks-traced-to-cinemas-is-zero/

I still wouldn't go to a cinema, but maybe studies like this (or apparent lack of cinema-related outbreaks after tracking rather than a study) is why they feel safe releasing the film. Hopefully it all works out.

Nitpick : Gendo's line at the end of 2.0 is "just a little longer", not "just a little longer, Yui". And there's the suggestion that Gendo line was a reference to him wanting to set off Third Impact (which indeed happened in the intervening years) so Gendo didn't actually have to wait all that long! ;)

I've just read that Hideaki Anno has finished editing and other work on 3.0 + 1.0. I thought the pandemic is what caused the delay or was it a convenient excuse to announce that the film would be pushed back.
I watch and speculate.

That, yes. Anno is an absolute perfectionist; there's a reason the film took 10 years to make, and it's not because he was lazy. The film was ready to be released half a year ago, but Anno wasn't about to let that extra time go to waste, and rather used it to give some finishing touches instead, so it truly represents what his vision of Eva is
