Nobody complained about the first delay because the virus and it's consequences were new. They announced the new date when the world already knew what was going on with the virus so its a joke to announce a new date if you are not sure about it. I explained that, in short, in my previous commentary.

Don't make populism with my words, as if I meant "they must sacrifice whatever it takes to keep the release date of a movie" :irked:

Leaks very rarely happen in the Japanese Entertainment industry, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I’m not sure how willing Toho and Toei would be willing to do streaming on demand for Shin Eva. My gut says they never will (Toho has a lot of stock in their own theaters), but a second delay would also look bad for them in non-Japanese markets.

But seeing as how they really don’t care about non-Japanese markets...

Just as a question, how long do you guys think it will take to get a fansubbed cam bootleg of this movie? I know that Japan has really strict anti-piracy laws, but I'm sure someone will at least try to bootleg it. I obviously don't live in Japan, but I still want to experience this movie as quickly as possible.

Unlike Hollywood, Japan or most Asian countries' film indstry rarely rely on international market to make profit, domestic revenue is all that matters.

There were few exceptions like Your Name (let's just leave Ghibli out for the sake of fairness for now) but it had the benefits of strong buzz in Japan as well as being a one-off and SFW teen romance flick with Shinkai swag which are its selling points, as opposed to being the closing part of a post-apocalyptic mecha anime film tetralogy. It's much harder to sell to general audience.

No idea at this moment. But for 3.0's case a relatively (emphasize on this) watchable camrip came out around January 2013, I think, there were a few leaked clips just a few days after release but they aren't really good either.

So I should be expecting a decent camrip in March 2021, if the current release date is kept. I think I might actually bow out of this forum when the movie releases in Japan, and return as soon as I get an opportunity to see it.

Same here, I spoiled myself ASAP back when 3.0 released and waited until about July '13 (IIRC that's when it released on Blu-Reiay) to watch it.

I watched 3.0 on YT like a week after it came out. The camrip was split into 12 parts I believe, and I would refresh YT like 4 times a day cause things got nuked within hours of popping up on YT. Then a few months later in April 2013 the JP BD released and I imported that.

All right then, make that early February 2021. I know I won't be watching it on YouTube though, since they don't have any patience for this sort of stuff.

An idea just popped into my mind... Knowing Anno, everything is meta and chockfull of manifold meaning, but maybe Thrice upon a time also alludes to the fact that (once) upon a time the three Evangelion movies happened, alluding to the fact that it's been quite some time since they happened.

Huh, I hadn't thought of that. It would fit. Makes me sort of melancholic, since to me it really does feel like 3.0 happened in another lifetime almost (I was a teen then).

I’m liking how people here are talking about a camrip getting released like it’s part of a schedule.

It’ll happen when it happens.

I mean with phone AV quality the way it is someone could record the damn film opening night if someone could pull it off.

I selfishly hope there is no camrip at all. I won't watch the film till it is available in HD (the blu-ray), and it'll be quite the challenge to stay spoiler-free for months I imagine.
A camrip being out there would probably make it likelier to get spoiled (with 3.0 people would gif the camrip even).

I also don't think a camrip is the way to watch this (hence me being so bummed out that Avant1 was only made available to a majority of people this way).

I probably have to fundamentally change how I use the internet starting january 23rd either way.

Well, the main reason I want a camrip is just because I think it's stupid that the Japanese will be able to watch it for whole months before it's made available in any other country. With Japan's Blu-Ray release schedule being the way it is, and vaccines not being able to be shipped out before January, we're gonna have to be waiting a really long time.

And I think you'd be surprised at how much camera technology has advanced since 2013 when the last movie came out. I mean, that opening scene rip you mentioned looked almost Blu-Ray quality in some shots, and that was more than a year ago.

Two to three months isn't very long in the grand scheme of things. Spring Song came out in Japan mid-August and we just concluded US screenings mid-November; IIRC Mary And The Witch's Flower had a similar close schedule. Compare that to before with getting an anime movie screening stateside years after it released in Japanese theaters. Most western anime companies realize that's now unacceptable even pre-Covid.
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

Khara/Anno conceived NTE as a cinema experience first and foremost. And having seen, yes, I can confirm the movie is like 5 times better on a big screen. It's similar to something like 2001, or much less pretentious, Interstellar.

BusterMachine has a point tho, Khara should know about their oversees fans, and that they still treat a global release as something of a minor inconvenience after all this years, makes me really wanna question why I poured so much money into this franchise just to get the short stick once again. I'm not asking for a wide release, but at least make it available in a few select locations, ffs.

Also, true. nowadays everybody has a phone with which they can record in crisp HD with great sound, iPhones especially have become top-notch in recording quality and almost every third person has one. So if Khara once again keeps ignoring their oversees fans, I'll honestly start rooting for it to get leaked ASAP

Khara running the Avant in multiple nations and having everything on their website translated to English leads me to feel confident they are aware of their global fan base.

And if GKids just announced NGE rights it would be very likely conversations about the Rebuilds were had.

If we weren’t living in the pandemic hellhole we’re in I would say everyone on this forum would have a chance to see the film in a theater by April.

Now... depends on how things go the next few months.

But even with the current situation we’re in I wouldn’t be surprised if Final gets a solid international release worldwide in 2021.

Right now Khara is being no different than Ghibli, Makoto Shinkai, etc treat international releases. The important thing is get it to domestic audiences first and then the rest of the world .

Imo you all sound a bit like spoiled children.

It is already challenging enough to meet the January release date in Japan and there is still a big chance theaters will be closed by January, especially if the situation keeps going on the current trend:

Image

Regarding an international release, it's pretty much impossible right now. The first obstacle is the cost of the license: as we know the Eva license is fairly expensive and anime in theaters, apart a few exceptions, are relatively niche. In the current climate, with theaters closed everywhere or half empty where they are open, buying Shin's license (as of today November 29th) is really risky.

After this first obstacle, there is another big obstacle: the movie needs to dubbed for a theatrical release to make commercial sense. Translating, adapting, dubbing and mixing a movie require months of work and we need to remember that the movie isn't even finished yet. Even if they finalized everything tomorrow there wouldn't be enough time to launch the movie in January.

Lastly, any distributor also need to sign contracts with theaters, again, another big hurdle.

The only realistic way to skip all this issues was to negotiate deals for screenings at comicons, but good luck with any of them happening in the winter.

My optimistic/realistic guess is Shin somehow managing to open in Japan on schedule and the movie coming out in theaters in the west somewhere around spring depending on COVID and also the distributors' pipeline (for example here in Italy theaters are shut down but the distributor of Eva has already announced a theatrical release of NGE: The Feature Film and Demon Slayer "post-covid", so Shin would have to come third in line).

Patiente my fellow nerds, anger is the way of pulling a Shinji-kun :shinji_gar: I want to burn my eyeballs and ears watching Shin as much as everyone else, but we need to wait. :misato_bored:

Was I one of the ones who sounded spoiled? I hope not. With confirmation of actually successful vaccines for Covid in the final stages now I’m totally up for the movie being delayed another half year or even longer until it’s far safer to run movies in theaters. If everyone did the right thing and avoided unnecessary risks for the next six months and let vaccines start making the rounds - sadly this is for in first world countries at least regrettably, I hope people do the right things and poorer nations aren’t forced to wait long for vaccines - we’d all be in a much MUCH safer world.

Every time I see people praising that Demon Slayer movie breaking records my first thought is always “oh no... that’s a lot of people in closed environments”
