I only heard that there was a new Re-Take a few days ago, the last page with

punished Shinji
completely cracked me up! :hitthetable:
Since there seems to still have this whole multiversal mumbo-jumbo, I really want this character to meet Q!Asuka, that would be epic!

I wonder if manga!Shinji will continue to be the protagonist
SPOILER: Show
since all his friends died in a couple page, or if he was a decoy protagonist and the real one is punished Shinji. (and I really want to see the timeline from which he comes from)

Yeah, that's exactly the world "alternate AsuShin" are from (lots of little clues throughout the ReTake volumes). Ours (bitter Asuka with Shinji) come from the EoE timeline (e.g. the little girl returning from the LCL Sea as hope that humanity will come back).

I've heard there have been one or two more volume updates since last year (makes sense with the various doujin events), I guess this is a brand new series happening now.

I heard somewhere that the young girl could be young Misato or Shinji/Asuka's daughter from retake. The one who became godly who says I'll meet you again someday.

Does any have any idea if the new volume for Re-Take Kai has been released at Comiket or such? The first three ones showed up on Western sites and were even translated super fast.

“There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.” - Frank Herbert

The Third Impact is complete, the enemies of humanity have won, and the armageddon has engulfed the world. Or has it? Shinji awakens in the aftermath of fighting the twelfth Angel, and feels the twelfth hour creeping upon him. Believed to be gifted with a vision of future, he gets in the robot determined to fix the mistakes of his past to save our future before time, or his sanity runs out. All the while, things take a much different turn, and the forces of evil threaten the preservation of the human race. Is Shinji the key to the salvation of humanity? Will NERV be able to cancel the apocalypse? Or is it all utterly inevitable?

-Out of all the stories I’ve read, Re-Take is not only my favorite ending to Evangelion, but one of my all time favorite mangas. What makes this comic special is that it’s self aware that it’s an alternative ending as explained in the story.

-A unique thing about the comic, is that the narrative shifts from Shinji to Asuka, both of whom excel in character development and emotional growth, which is an unmatched milestone in fan service.

-This masterpiece of fan work will make any Evangelion fan exhilarated and breathless. If End of Evangelion has made you feel tumbling down, Re-Take will help you put yourself back together.

The arc comes full circle in EVANGELION RE-TAKE, now available. (For mature and adult audiences only!)

And for those who completed Re-Take, the story Re-Take: After is released. It is both a heart aching and heart warming extended epilogue in the aftermath of the acclaimed Doujinshi.

I'm pretty sure Re-Take doesn't need advertisements on an Eva forum, and especially not in a thread dedicated to it. As I told you by PM, if you're going to write ad copy for fun, at least say in your post that this is what you're doing, because you look like you've been possessed by a spam bot otherwise. You know what we do to spam bots here? We delete them.

Sorry for interrupting the conversation, but I will never understand why everyone likes Retake. It just feels like a blatant Asushin wish fulfillment fantasy for me. Shinji goes back in time to Episode 16, fixes everything with the power of contrived writing, instantly hooks up with Asuka, and makes Rei hang herself out of pure jealousy. Then Shinji and Asuka fuck like rabbits for the next 100 pages. It’s everything I hate about Eva fan fiction.

You're not wrong. While I'm one of the many people that like to recommend Retake (and Rommel's Genocide fanfic) to people who just watched Eva and feel like they have not had closure, I'll freely say it's not that good. It's not bad either, a solid 7-8. It has some great ideas (Ghost Asuka among them), hit or miss execution, okay art at first, and great art later (especially in After and in the All Ages bonus chapters), and its wish-fulfillment nature is both fully embraced and rejected, as Shinji gets everything he wants, has to drop it in favour of reality, *and* also gets his fairytale ending... in another timeline. Yeah.

Still, I'd recommend it any day over any of the "official" Evangelion spin-off material. Retake may not be perfect, but it's not 24/7 ecchi like SIRP or a horrible and inconsistent edgy AU like CA or DS, or a tired attempt at comedy like Piko-Piko. Angelic Days is an okay shoujo romance story, I'll give it that. I own a chapter myself, as I found it on a fruit shop once, in a rack by the entry next to some crosswords and porn mags. What most English-speaking Eva fans rarely understand is that Eva is quite popular and mainstream in the rest of West (to say nothing of Japan), as it was shown on public television many years earlier, when anime was already a more widespread and popular phenomenon also years in advance of the US, Canada and UK - worth mentioning that this was also the case in Australia, but that's too small and faraway of a market to make a big difference. Angelic Days is so popular and well-known in Brazil it's a classic girl's manga on its own.

You can also try some other darker fanfiction if that's your thing, like Scar Tissue, the aforementioned Genocide or Adam Kadmon's stuff.

To stay on thread, it was always Asuka and Misato for me.

I was probably a Shinji in my child and teenage hood. I was quiet and shy, but still had the desire of friendship and love. Always anxious about whether my deeds were helpful or abhorred by others. Even I started to cook sometimes in that age, which was and still is praised by my relatives.
Nowadays i'm more of an adult male Rei, though i'm a neatfreak. I don't express myself or my emotions to anyone except the people i'm intimate to. Most of the time my reaction is Rei's prominent blank stare. And i'm quite submissive as well.

I'm not sure, I'm probably Shinji becouse I'm depressed af tho I'm much older now. I was around 15 when I first saw Evangelion and I was much more similar to Shinji, but I'm 23 now and I feel my life just got worse since. I would like to see Shinji as a 23 years old to see what difficulties he have in his adult life

Same!

I have no problem with the wish fulfillment like that's what FF is for; It's the super contrived writing with no sense of structure whatsoever & that everyone pretends it's great. Like who would immediately assume that a dream is prophetic? Like set up something to have Shinji realize it was a vision. The narration is really dry "this happened, and then that happened" with no sense of being in any place or time.

Also yeah the super humiliating Rei bashing was super childish like it feels like an obvious middle finger reaction to the fact that to other people ship them. If you don't ship rs then just... don't ship it. Just have them be friends. But that's the least of it. The hanging or the "cant look at her without thinking of EoE madness" aspect could have been good tragedy or horror if it was well executing but it's that they made her super attention hungry in this deliberately shallow uncomprehending way that's the problem.

I guess it wouldn't bug me as much if ppl didn't hype it so much as "better than canon" or "should be canon" etc. To be fair one has got to commend the author for their artistic skill and the determination to carry through such a big project. Generally I believe that "Erotica with serious plot" is a very good thing.

I mean, Anno chose to make this relatively young protagonist his self-insert because he didn't feel he had his shit together even when he was older; (there was, I think, an explicit statement on thaz) That's certainly relatable back there

Went ahead and moved the tangent from the "which characters do you identify with" thread here

As for my personal take on retake - I absolutely despise it. Poorly written, inconsequential shipping garbage that butchers characters left, right and center while stroking its own ego about how great and deep it is despite taking a nuanced ending about accepting yourself and moving on and replacing it with "just wait for your perfect OTP saviour to show up and fix all your problems for you", and yet for some fucking reason, people continue to insist that it is the greatest thing ever. Sure, the art is good, but you can polish a turd all you want, it won't turn into anything else from it

I hated that as well as character bashing and ship bashing to me shows immaturity on the writers part, I confess when I read it the first time I thought this was the best thing ever but that was only because I had not read The 2nd Try and Ghosts which are far superior works on all levels.

I also feel the horror element in retake was a huge missed opportunity. Its put it in the adult version of the comic with the mass Evangelion's raping Asuka which comes off really poor taste and utter edge lord, when what made that scene terrible in EOE had nothing do with sexual violence it was the concept of them eating her alive and her being powerless to stop her own death.

It's fair to call it amateurish (because it is), but calling it "shipping garbage" is unfair IMO. The whole point of the story is that you can't just get a fairy tale happy ending, and that you have to face the people you've harmed and actually deal with them. There's a lot of good discussion in this very thread about it that might change some minds on the matter. See here, for example.

Also, remember that Re-Take is fairly old; it came out in 2006, I think. At the time it was one of the few fan-made stories out there that addressed the fact that Shinji and Asuka had a lot of work to do before they could move forward, and i think that's part of its enduring appeal. If you look at it in a modern context, alongside all of the work that's come since, it suffers a bit.

But EoE conveyed that message much better, without all the Asushin shipping bullshit and constant character bashing. That's why I get so frustrated whenever someone says that "ReTake fixes EoE" or "ReTake is better than canon," because the actual canon was able to convey the messages that ReTake attempted to convey without also trying to be a stupid porno. That alone makes EoE indisputably better than ReTake in my opinion.

Well, most Re-Take fans don't go that far. And you do know there's an All Ages version available, right? Most fans, including the author, consider the All Ages version the definitive version, since it cleans up a lot of the messiness in the original.

The general impression I was getting was that most fans of the fic think it's better than canon, although I may have been wrong. They certainly used very glowing words of praise to describe it, at least.

And the version I was reading was the All-Ages version, but I still didn't like it. And it started as a porno, and the All-Ages version still has traces of that stuff in it, so I'm gonna call it a porno.
