One thing I noticed in the trailer is that Unit 08 has the standard Eva armor design it had during the space sequence at the beginning of Q and didn't have the more "heavy" design that was used in the rest of the film. That could be for all kinds of reasons story-wise but I'd like to think Anno is going back to using regular designs and gives me hope we'll see Unit 01 make an appearance as well.
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

When AAA wunder is seen charging versus the "dark wunder", it has 4 halos instead the 2 seen when it first takes off in 3.0

I'm hoping when Unit 01 makes her returns she's a spooky mess.
That she was never repaired after her big moment at the end of 2.0 and that whatever has been done to make her the core of the Wunder involves lots of bandages and exposed horrors. Like a corpse coming to life.

Essentially I want this running around and screaming as it destroys things.

Regrettably I don't think that kind of imagery fits with the tone of the Rebuilds but those scary shots of Rei or a Rei like image in this and the last trailer do give me hope they'll go all the way in this final go at the series. Though I do think the most likely scenario is we get Classic Unit 01 in all her purple and green glory.

My guess is that Asuka suits up in their quarters but she also goes to schlick to Shinji, I mean, to see Shinji in his cell, as we can see in that other shot, where she seems to be standing outside of it. It looks like she's pensive. She'll go and call him "Hey, idiot" and they'll have a heart to heart. People are forgetting that Mari ships Asushin harder than any one of us, as she keeps telling both parts to talk to each other in 3.0. "You know Princess, we might not come back alive. Maybe you should tell him how you feel."

In all seriousness, it won't really be all that shippy, but Asuka certainly has unresolved feelings of *some* sort towards Shinji, and that feels like the ideal opportunity for her to to talk about it. People have already suggested that Mari is getting a death flag like Kaworu. Imagine if Shinji says something like "Tell me when you get back?"

I rotated the scene with the Mark.10 and made a gif. Warning: the gif is big.

The lower half of the body and the arms are painted like Unit 03, the torso like Unit 00/Mark.09.

The dark colouring might be more the SEELE version of the Mark.09 from the end of Q than Unit 03

I remember being disappointed Unit 00 didn't get it's blue-white colour scheme from the series after Operation Yashima, but in the longer term it's cooler having the yellow-white consistency between 00, 09 and the Mark 10 piloted by the Ayanami series.

Edit- this might sound silly but the line under the X on the Mark 10's face and the V shape in the left side of the X might mean it's actually Eva Mark XIV/14, numerically one more than the Mark 13 rather than 09?

Edit 2-picture posted earlier that show the 'I' and the 'V' that make me think it's actually Mark 14

That'd be something, eh? Realistically, we're talking about a Rei clone or if not that, then some long-distance controlling by Fuyutsuki. (It would be dope and also really strange if Fuyutsuki transferred his soul into Mark.10 in the same way Yui did with Unit-01 and Gendo is most likely intending to do with Unit-13, but that's not going to happen-it would create way too many questions. Though with Anno you never truly know...)
TheFriskyIan wrote:

I hadn't thought about that, to be honest. But whatever Unit Rei Q was piloting in 3.33 didn't look that huge in comparison to Mark.10. It's possible that the shot we saw in the trailer is just really quite great at showing the scale of a normal Eva, but I wouldn't put the idea of Mark.10 being larger than your traditional Eva Unit out of the head just yet. It's fun to think about, at the least.

I feel Shin Eva will probably a fairly straightforward structure

While this seems perfectly reasonable, and I'm sure Anno's sheer directing prowess will make it entertaining I do hope he shakes things up more than this.
You've also mentioned Q and EoE being pretty straight forward, which is correct. Q was just such a curveball it seemed more convoluted than it actually is (also Kaworu being the opposite of open and clear and what is basically the second part missing for 7+ years doesn't help) and EoE is so emotionally straining it hurts. I think people having trouble understanding Eva are very young and not used to any complexity or nuance in their media whatsoever, which is understandable, given the medium Evangelion is a part of.
View Original PostBlockio wrote:Nonono, you're absolutely right, I very much agree that narratively and in its message, Eva is pretty straightforward. This whole sentiment of "Eva is this cryptic monolith that mere mortals shouldn't even dare to try and understand" is something that has been bothering me since pretty much the beginning.

this, tbh

I know Khara sucks making trailers but does Anno think that EVA fans want the movie to be just an action? I wanted it to be cerebral Magnus opus. That would add something to the original. This doesn't seem to be heading that way.

Remember that Rebuild is first and foremost conceived as a spectacle for movie theaters. With lots of action and dense imagery.
I love Khara's trailers, especially the ones they did for Q. But I generally hate Hollywood Trailers which are cut to be as sappy and hokey as possible while basically retelling the whole movie.
View Original Postkuribo-04 wrote:I don't think action has to be devoid of meaning. In fact the first half of EoE is very action-heavy, and still full of depth. I would say the same for a lot of the action in Rebuild, especially in 3.0.
I also love the Rebuild trailers...they might even be my favourite trailers ever. But I guess it's a taste thing.

There's programmable LED stripes you could use! I personally am not really feeling the white, tho in concept I should be in love with the Rainbows... I do love the idea of the cut contrasting and mirroring Shinji's and Kaworu's descent in Q.

View Original PostTheFriskyIan wrote:I'd say the Mark 10 is actually the standard size of an Eva. 1.0 did a good job of portraying an Eva's size in comparison to people, but 2.0 & 3.0 doesn't really do much for size comparisons other than showing that the Wundar is in fact pretty damn big (enough for Unit 08 to run on its side and have plenty of open space). The Mark 10 only looks huge when comparing it to individual sized humans, next to another Eva it'll probably be roughly the same size.

Great point, I was like "wtf, Mark 10 looks huge", but you made me realize that Evas *are* in fact huge. This shot just makes it apparent again since its contrasted with humans.

We know nothing to care about so this is not only your opinion she's just there doing stuff because she wants to.. Not bad per se but people often "require" certain qualities to relate on a personal level with a fictional character..

Mari is not my favorite character (that would be Ritsuko), but her (I just wanna have fun with you), along with Kaworu (I just wanna be in love with you) are the characters I most closely relate to.

I'm not too sure about that. The "not used to complexity or nuance in their media" I agree with, but "very young" not so much. There's a sizable amount of middle-aged people who go in droves to watch the new instalments of Avengers, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter etc. franchises despite them having very little complexity or nuance and whatever they do have is by no means adequately comparable to what Eva has. What you said may be very well true in Japan, but really not in the West. There are still relatively old people who talk about Inception as if it's the most complex piece of cinema there ever is.

The real problem lies in popular culture generally not being very sophisticated and if you spend your childhood digesting/consuming such works, you're not going to be that used to actual sophistication/complexity/nuance/layers/etc. in artworks (perhaps not even an artistic sensibility) and then you look at works like Eva as insanely complex and difficult to understand. Not to say that thinking Eva is insanely complex is telling of you not being able to handle large levels of sophistication or that this is indicative of you being stupid or something else like that, it's just that if you're not used to thinking all that much when engaging with artworks you're not going to find Eva as understandable and straightforward than if you were watching, say, David Lynch films since you were 20. Not to mention that while Eva's structure and themes are rather straightforward, its way of telling its story is anything but.

Great teaser, in general.
I feel that 3.0 + 1.0 is going to be a lot more "open world" than 3.0, just like 2.0 was when compared to 1.0.
A pity that, apparently, most of the action will still take place in Japan. I really hoped Anno would show us the state that Antarctica is after 2I, for example.

Also Unit 08 got a tail.

Maybe I'm overthinking, but this scene gives me a lot of Gunbuster vibes: it looks like the two EVAs are going to the center of the Impact and are going to activate/detonate something inside (the "tail" of EVA08 could be a set of bombs?), and are going to eject desperately to save themselves, just like Noriko/Kazumi did inside the Gunbuster Machine # 3, fleeing as soon as they activated the Black Hole Bomb.

I definitely agree there, but I do still believe that far too many people make it out as something larger than it actually is, and in doing so miss the point of it entirely. I honestly can't count the amount of times I have seen statements to the effect of "Forget it bro, you're not meant to understand Evangelion", which is obviously garbage.

Anyway, back on topic; I really really love that shot of Mark.10. This is exactly the kind of thing that I wish more shows did, make their monolithic war machines actually appear as enormous as they are. Show them upclase and personal to things we have a proper scale for. I absolutely love Anno for including this scene.

Over the entirety of Evangelion since the first episode in 1995 I've always been amazed at how much information Anno & his team have been able to pack into every moment. Whether it's character, narrative or world building it's always at the forefront and the series, both NGE and Rebuild, has little to no superfluous fluff.

It's why I don't buy the narratives some people have tried to push these last few years about how Thrice Upon A Time will be a 150 minute long film because there's just so much material to be covered. I think another filmmaker would need that time because they approach things like
"Character Scene here, then after that is a 5 minute Exposition scene, then follow that up with a a fun little world building excursion here, then - " but this team has shown they're good at packing a lot in a short time.

Still feel if the movie does happen to go over 2 hours it will be by mere minutes.

Someone told me the room Asuka is outside of what might just be Asuka and Mari's quarters. Those strips on the wall seem to resemble it and some people think you can see the bunk bed (I'm not quite sure) and the walls also seem to be in the same place where Mari gives a wave in the second trailer. The plexiglass outside almost certainly indicates this is the same room Shinji is in the first trailer, specifically in that shot with Kaworu. Why Asuka is wearing her undamaged classic plugsuit is still a mystery.

So this leaves three possibilities:

1- Asuka is just going to their room, and it's her room and Mari's alone
. I don't see much of a reason for the movie to frame it that way if they just obviously show the insides of their room afterwards, with her changing plugsuit later in their room. What would be the point of that? She stares at her quarters like it means something, then goes in suits up? That's not how it works. The traile implies those are separate scenes. Shinji is almost certainly jailed somewhere either way.

2 - This is Shinji's cell, but, it just follows the same pattern as Asuka and Mari's room.
This is further reinforced by the other scenes of him in both trailers. The blueish lighting reinforces it too. If there even is a bunk bed he could just have one in his room, I suppose. This resembles Rei Q"s room in neo-Nerv in 3.0. At first glance, this is the most logical assumption, as had Wille now has had some more time to deal with the situation and could confirm it was actually Shinji, unlike what happened when he woke up in 3.0.

Asuka going to Shinji's room.
Image

Shinji in his room. This is rather obvious, the plexiglass wall looks exactly the same:
Image

Mari waving. The walls resemble both her quarters and Shinji's apparent cell, as well as Shinji's holding cell in 3.0 It seems that that's just how the internal walls are on the Wunder..
Image

Shinji's cell in 3.0:
Image

Finally, this is the Minna no Eva's video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kvz-cr5_Fjc&feature=youtu.be&t=136

The angle for this shot also doesn't seem to match with it being the room Asuka is walking towards, because the bunk bed also looks to be placed more to the center than in that other shot, where it's next up to the plexiglass. It can be "camera" placement, however. Assuming it even is a bunk bed in the other shot, I'm not quite sure. Or...

Image

3 - Shinji is in the same room as Asuka and Mari. This seems unlikely, but Wille didn't allocate him immediately in a dedicated cell in 3.0, and he was instead in some sort of clinic/holding cell, and now that Shinji is back they had to shove him in there.

Image

However, this brings me to the Minna no Eva video and the concept art, which actually mentions Asuka and Mari's room is supposed to isolate "dangerous people" (i.e. pilots) from the Wunder crew. This means that Asuka and Mari's room is already a cell, in a sense. Perhaps Wille doesn't have any more of those laying around, and puttting Shinji in the same one was the only option. Furthermore, the plexiglass wall thingy also identical to the shot with Shinji and Kaworu.

Nobody seemed to have asked where Rei goes in the Wunder, though. In UYCTM, it appears she might not make it all. If she does, she'd either be executed by Wille (lol probably not) or jailed as well. But would she be alone? Or in Shinji's cell too, together with him? That could explain him having a bunk bed there, anyway. Or together with Asuka, Mari and Shinji?

You know, you are totally right. There's people who have never learnt to engage with art beyond all-pervasive spectacle cinema and since Evangelion now is kinda trying to be exactly that might be the reason why we have so many people who have trouble understanding the show. Like, this is a huge franchise now.

The original series started off as inherently trashy, albeit uncannily well-crafted low-brow anime entertainment for Otaku (meaning mostly men failing to grow up) turnt into the quintessential all-influencing Sekai-no-Owari cultural hallmark that deeply resonated with a whole generation because of its seemingly effortless merging of disparate cultural riptides in an ever-fragmenting media landscape. It was lightning in a bottle, it was metamodern to the max and it explains why the ever-lasting discourse of Evangelion goes from "Waifu Wars" over nerdgasmic treatises over lore that puts other nerd-properties to shame, to mech aficionados, to film-geeks appreciating Anno's direction, to people just being wrapped up in the ravishingly secular designs and the meta of it.
What I'm trying to say is, Evangelion, the series, never had mainstream appeal per se, but appealed to many, many niches at the same time.
And then Anno decided that now, it's time for Evangelion to become a mainstream spectacle with NTE in order to reach the masses. He already made the perfect work for Otaku of all sorts, he already caught us, but with Rebuild he wants to talk to everybody. But it's still Anno and still Evangelion, so Evangelion now kind of sits in this very specific intersection between spectacle entertainment and sophisticated Avantgarde-auteurship with all the prior described meta baggage of Evangelion accompanying it.

Also, don't forget that you can put much more information into a 2D frame than into Live Action, because it's inherently more controlled and the viewer's brain has less superfluous stuff to compute.

I never really caught the mecha bug. I like a lot of mecha anime, but it's not because of the mechs, it's the stories and characters that surround them.
But even within mecha anime I far prefer something like the mechas of Zeta Gundam or something like that. The mechs in Evangelion are just okay for me.

It's just my personal preference.

It's like a mix of the unlucky, cursed Evas.

Also, unless that black plig suit Mari wears was recolored and is now the white one, she will wear three plug suits. Wow. I wonder if the black one might be the "space suit" (which was written on the wall in one of the shots of trailer 1)...Or maybe it is the white one. White does remind of astronauts.

Honestly, at this point I don't really care what the story does in this movie; it can't possibly be worse than what 3.0 did. All that matters to me, at least for now, is that we get some cool mech designs out of it. If nothing else, 3.0 certainly delivered on that front, with Mark 09's cape/jetpack combo, Unit 02's crazy-awesome saber-tooth tiger mode, and the just plain weird-looking Mark 04. If 3.0+1.0 can top that, I'll be satisfied.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.
