That is the right attitude.
But I have no idea what my life will be by then, so I don't wanna think about that timeframe lol. For now I'll be happy with actual trailers coming.

We are 98 days away from the premiere. Not to be pessimistic, but the movie was delayed 71 days before the release back in April.

sorry for not double checking the exact time frame, but it doesn't invalidate my point at all.

Wonder what the chance of an international release next year would be? A digital anime convention subtitled showing? Short of that I'm considering flying to Japan...

I wouldn't plan on that.

To prevent Covid-19 outbreaks on the US Japanese Embassy website states in bold: Travel for tourism and most other short-term purposes is still not permitted, and there is no indication that this will change in the short term.

There have been talks, just talks, of easing up on international travel/tourist restrictions in Japan for the Olympics games but that's not until July 2021.

So now that we have processed all of this being real:
How do we feel about the release date?

I do not think what they are doing is immoral, but at the same time it is neither of the two safest bets: releasing the film digitally or after COVID is "solved", whatever that means (vaccine I imagine).

I guess at this point we are getting used to living with the virus and life must go on. How different is sitting in the cinema from boarding a train (which I do)? I don't know. I will not watch at in the cinema anyway, even if it comes out nearby somehow, but I WILL buy the bluray the second it's up for pre-order.

So summing up, I feel like it should be pretty save at this point, but a part of me worries.
(I should add I obviously feel joy at the release date becuase I wanna see the film ASAP).

Then there is the issue of the film's success. No summer release, no Olympics, and a pandemic going on. Do you think this will truy affect the film's box office? Remember how we have discussed this isn't just one movie. This is an enormous thing for khara with how much time (and probably money) they have invested.

And unrelated: Man I really wanna see figures for white plug suit Asuka.

I think are pretty much gambling on the situation in Japan not worsening. Demon Slayer got a lucky window: theaters are open without social distancing for its opening weekend and it reportedly set new 1 day records in Japan, so there is a potential.

TOHO already had Pokèmon scheduled for December so that month was a no go, and November was probably too early if they are still animating scenes right now, so January was the earliest window.

I hope we have a stable 98 days in Japan.

I'll remain a little more optimistic with regards to the Blu-ray release date but I admit that it's likely wishful thinking.

I wouldn't say it's wishful thinking. A fast release is possible with a previous example being there. But a later release is just as possible I guess.

I just want to have time when the film comes out. Ideally a vaction.

I think it all depends on what precautions the movie theaters in Japan take to ensure patrons' safety. I would like to know what they do there compared to theaters in the US or any other country.

Me too, and I'm not really into figures like some people.

I can not take the agony of another delayed international release and then the DVD to come out. I will try to find any opportunity to see this as early as possibly (though I can't speak Japanese, I am hopeful Khara possibly a subtitled version since we have all waited so long).

I personally never understood the marketing strategy of The Olympics. I'm not saying there aren't anime fans among people who are training to play or people who wanted to go to the event. But I also don't think people who were exclusively going to go for the Olympics were also going to take time out to see the finale of a movie series they may or may not have watched or even heard of.

3.0 came out in Nov 2012 and the BD came out in April 2013 if my memory is correct. So it's fully possible the BD will be out by Aug/Sep '21.

When we watched Tenet they just kept one seat free between strangers. Keep in mind tho, that Japan has a very "relaxed" approach to COVID, me thinks the government might even be secretly happy that now the huge demographic bulge of Mega-Old people get flattened (:|

As I said, 3.0 had a remarkably quick turnover into home media, keep in mind that 2.22 almost took a year.

Let's also not forget that as long as the movie is in theaters, the movie will not release in home video. I remember the wait for your name. being endless. If Shin is really a huge success then we may have to wait a really long time.

I feel the same way.

You're right.
I guess maybe they were counting on the general excitement of all these events to help, but who knows. And maybe Eva characters were meant to be Olympics mascots (this might still happen).

If he timeframe were to be the same (5 months) it would be out by the end of june even. Really hoping for a summer release.

I'm sure Shin will be an enormous success, but I don't expect it to be as big as a mass-appeal giant like Your Name. But who knows. I hooe it's as succesful as possible.

Reminder that january release means we can guess at certain merch release too:

That book that was gonna "explain" Rebuild might come soon.
On release day there will be a (spoiler-heavy) companion book in cinemas probably (I'll try getting one, then not open it till I see the film).
And I guess soon after the film the soundtrack album will come.

No doubt evangelion will be a big hit in Japan. Like many franchises, the last film or long expected sequel, is always going to make a big impact when it comes out. Internationally, Netflix has attracted many anime lovers to watch the series; however, it is still quite an old anime that may have lost its momentum due to the delays, and most people who have not watched the previous films may not be interested. I imagine in different countries, eva 4 will have some limited screening with release dates at different times. Hope to watch it on repeat conveniently at some point in a darkened room with a bag of popcorn.

One thing to keep in mind with how Shin will do is that Eva is absolutely ENORMOUS in Japan. As in, "28th highest grossing franchise worldwide, most of that domestically" enormous.
Basically everyone in Japan at least knows what it is, the franchises that are more prolific can pretty much be counted on your hands. Hell will freeze over before Shin is going to do poorly.

Evangelion has mass appeal in Japan already, and both the long hiatus and the additional delay imposed by the pandemic have made people more eager than ever to watch 3.0 + 1.0. Whether or not it beats Kimi no na wa is irrelevant, it'll do Wunder-size well at the box office even if Anno makes it as lousy as Game of Thrones's ending!
