Jesus Christ, that anime film trilogy made me angry. I should go back and reevaluate it, but I'm not optimistic I'll like it any better. (I might hate it less, maybe, but I probably won't like it any better.)

Loving that Nick Adams action going on in the cast sheet for the new Godzilla anime.


Actually, a fair number of these characters look like animated versions of the actors in various Godzilla films. The woman on the left in the business suit is totally Satomi Ishihara's Kyoko Ann Patterson character from Shin Godzilla.

That anime trilogy was soooooooooooooo bad.

Obviously we have nothing to go on right now except a character sheet and a Godzilla sketch but this is already far more promising than those films because when a Godzilla ANIME was announced I wanted an ANIME and not a CG mess.

Also, unless a change has happened very GODZILLA VS KONG is still scheduled for May 21, 2021. Though of course that change at a moment's notice.

If it makes you feel better Beastars S1 is a fantastic anime (I have been meaning to anime review this over in the thread) both in story telling and how it uses character framing Orange really know how to use CGI well, as you watch it you forget the CGI is even there after episode 2. If they can pull it off in Godzilla it might end up as an excellent series.

I need to watch that Beastars show. I've only heard good things and the clips I've seen did make the CG look compelling.

I'm certainly not ANTI-CG. Any format, medium, etc can make great art it's just for the Godzilla Trilogy there was nothing the filmmakers did visually that I found visually appealing. All I remember is thinking the three movies were very dark green, brown and grey. And they turned Godzilla into a brown pile of immobile mush. Also the story was just.... ooof.

Curious to see what they'll do in this new Godzilla anime. I'm hoping they really take advantage of it being an animation and do things that might not work in live action.

I would really recommend Beastars, people think its just sexual zooptopia for adults but I'd argue the layers go much deeper than that plus the manga creator is not afraid to go very dark places but never uses these dark places just to be edgy or for shock value as she has a point to make.

I agree on the Godzilla trilogy, I hated the flat base colours and I didn't like their version of Godzilla at all, to me it wasn't artistically pleasing and it didn't stand out. In the Godzilla trilogy all this you might have been able to look the other way on, if the story was good but it's not it's an utter train wreck. I also feel GCI only works when it's not trying to be CGI like its painted like in Evangelion's rebuild or it's used to enhance the visuals like in Beastars.

I generally hate it on humans though to me I think people are better if their 2d just enhanced as CG1 gives them this plastic toy feel whereas it can work fine on monsters and mechs depending on who is creating it, though I'll be honest in the trilogy it doesn't work Godzilla looks boring and the mechs look like solid metal 80's action figures.

Not much to go on except that maybe the Godzilla & kaiju stuff will all be fully CG and the human scenes will be traditionally animated.

Major kudos to Toho for wheeling him back out to play in the Godzilla franchise for the first time since his debut in Godzilla vs Megalon. (I am aware of his appearances in video games a comics and TV special shorts, but those weren't flagship features as much as this show is!)

Also, it looks like we're getting some new monsters, and some new takes on old monsters! And I absolutely love the Akira Ifukube-style instrumentation and approach to small orchestral score without reusing any of his traditional Godzilla music. That's some finesse when it comes to approaching nostalgia with a fresh take on things!

I agree this looks a hundred times better, the GGI use feels way more natural and I love that they kept 2d people.

Not a fan at all. Simply nah.

In order for a monster with a look that bad and wrong to actually work, it needs to also be nightmarish in appearance. This has all of the bad and wrongness without the nightmarish aspect to it.

Probably in the next godzilla vs kong movie, they'll hint that godzilla and kong had hate sex during their fight and thus this abomination which already gave them the plot idea for another movie they'll come after this one. They think of the farthest future, we gotta give them that.

Interesting you say that as I viewed this as them taking the sex joke in KOM literally which was Titans only meet if they want to fight or have sex. Yet the films joke wasn't quite accurate as they didn't know before that point in the film about the companionship between Mothra and Godzilla which was one life form caring deeply for another despite not being the same species and seems emotionally grounded not sexually grounded.

So if they go for a hybrid in later films and if its not engined by Jonah then they've missed KOM point completely which is Titans do have emotional relationships they don't need to have sexual ones.

I watched the movie 2-3 times but still oblivious of such thing. Which part did they mention that? I do know about the fight part, but sex?

I think it's cute people think there are going to be future movies in this Monsterverse. This films cost sooooooo much and the returns are so small.

Not films, film. We assume Godzilla vs. Kong will be released because it’s already done — they finished filming it before KotM was even released, so there’s no sense in dropping it now. I don’t think anyone has any illusions about seeing more Legendary Godzilla flicks after this one, though.

^ Oh, there’s always some article out there trying to drum up more hype for a Monsterverse beyond GvK. I don’t think it’s gonna happen (especially after Covid), but that’s what parts of the internet are expecting.
