So what's the 03K about?
Also, on the top, there's Sin (a way to transliterate the word SHIN) Dpart on 2nd of October, 05:59:50:00 What's that figure about? Is that all rebuilds combined? It can't really be, but curiously enough combining the runtime of the first 3 movies amounts to 5 hours 27 minutes which could be written as 05:27:??(seconds):??(cs) so that wouldn't add up. Anybody got an idea?

Frames. There's 24 frames per second. It's an easier way to note than decimals of a second.

Look through the Making-of features and you'll see that notation (eg "1+16[040K]" = 1 second (24 frames) + 16 frames = 40 frames total for the cut)

But the 2-hour constraint is only on the theatrical version, the home video version can easily overcome them.
If Shin Evangelion is the last great final movie that Anno wants to make to end his path in the "Evangelion world", I think he has all the artistic interest to making a totally satisfying conclusion, for him and for the fans. Maybe parts A, B, etc of Evangelion 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 could be considered for references.
Assuming AVANT1 10 minutes, AVANT2 5-10 minutes, A 20-30 minutes, B 20-30 minutes, C 20-30 minutes, D 40 minutes, the movie could last from 115 to 150 minutes. Considering that Mononoke hime and Kaguya hime are long 135 min, I think Shin Evangelion could have a similar duration, if not for the theatrical version, at least for the home video version.

Hmm. I must take back some of my skepticism regarding long running time. 5ch nanJ-min are hardly experts when it comes to film/anime production, but the tone here in the reaction thread is so uniformly "wait is this going to be 2½ hours or what" in style I guess chances of it going over 2 hours are not nonexistent.

Still very unlikely in light of Khara Nigouki comment, however. If they have material for 2½ hours they can't realistically even aim at making it under 2 hour feature.

View Original PostZusuchan wrote:Xard, when it comes to Miyazaki, the only film of his that is substantially over the 2-hour mark is Princess Mononoke at 133 minutes and that was supposed to be Miyazaki's last film (dude's incapable of retirement)- it makes sense that no one would bat an eye. Everything else over the 2-hour mark doesn't go over 126 minutes, so it's not that big a difference and I don't imagine any big businessman particularly caring.

Yeah. I was thinking of Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away and 2013 movies.

Mononoke Hime 2h13min
Spirited Away 2h4min
Wind Rises 2h6min
The Tale of Princess Kaguya 2h17min

Consider how many anime films there are that fall just a little short of 2 hours compared to how few features there are that cross the mark even by no big deal 3-5 minutes. I'm not sure how screening blocks are split exactly in Japan, but I think it is clear even minimal increase above 120 minutes running time spells doom in terms of screening category.

Ghibli can do this because it is literally Ghibli we are talking about - and more pointedly Miyazaki, because the one Takahata film on this list bombed pretty bad in box office which together with its astronomical production cost must've been bad even for studio like Ghibli.

Say, you have a film that is 120 minutes. You will need to add to this: 10-15 minutes for pre-screening commercials and trailers. You will then also need to reserve certain amount of for cleaning before next screening in the same theatre can take place.

At minimum I think the screening bloc for 120 minute film has to be 2½ hours reservation. So going over 2 hours mark at all is prone to put the film in category of 150 minute long feature at minimum.

I need to check out how these blocs are organized in Japan (presuming that is public information) to say anything more certain than this, but I'm sure the businesses are really pesky about these running time things. In general, though, see this and this

Exhibitors still have a say in movie length, too. Longer films tend to mean fewer screenings per day, which means reduced profits. It also means long films get sub-optimal screening times during the day. Ideally, a film should be screened around 8 or 9 p.m. to afford people a chance to see it at a convenient hour. If a film is under two hours, it can also screen at 5:30 and 10:30. But if it’s creeping toward three hours, that means other showtimes begin much earlier or much later than moviegoers prefer. Not many people will opt for a three-hour epic that begins at 11 p.m.

As you can see, the schedule is pretty packed, with an average of just half an hour between screenings in any given screen. During this time the first audience leaves, the staff clean up and the new audience take their seats – a pretty speedy turnaround, especially for the larger screens.

This means that cinemas are very much at the mercy of filmmakers when it comes to how many screenings they can squeeze in each day. Multiplexes such as the Vue Westfield have a little more flexibility than sites with a small number of screens. The screening times of a single-screen site are pretty much dictated by the running time. The cinema programmer can choose the start time of one of the day’s screenings (let’s say, 6pm) but then all of the other screening times that day are inevitable (i.e. the earliest the next screening of a three-hour movie could begin is 9:45pm, once turnaround, commercials and trailers are taken into account).

This is at the heart of why cinemas don’t like long movies.

Using data on all UK cinema screenings last month, we can see that the most common start time for movies was exactly 8pm. This makes sense as it’s a good time for people socialising after work.

1.11 - 1h40m58s
2.22 - 1h52m09s
3.33 - 1h35m39s
=> - 5h08m06s

The movies so far are a bit shorter than 5h27m, and doing some math that would be

AVANT1+AVANT2+A+B+C = 51m44s
Hypotethical Shin total lenght = 92m6s

I would think that 05:59:50:00 is just a placeholder or something, 92m would be way too short.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting Khara to start talking about 3.0+1.0, but hey, that's better than 8 months of pure silence in regards to the film. I appreciate the crumbs of information Anno has blessed us with, even if it's not much to theorize over. Although, I still think the movie won't be out by atleast 2021.

In those cast messages Akio Otsuka, the voice of the old guy Takao on the Wunder and more importantly as Captain Nemo from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, reveals he was originally offered a role in NGE but couldn’t do it for health reasons at the time.

If I was a betting man I’d say that role was Gendo Ikari.
Interesting little tidbit.

05: 59: 50: 00 could mean anything. Counting the 4 movies is the first possibility, but we can think some theories.

The four numeric blocks could indicate the 4 parts (A-D) of the movie, but 5+59+50+41 = 155, and if we add 11 min of Avant1 we get 166 min, in my opinion it is an exaggeration.

Another possibility is that the 4 numerical blocks indicate the macro parts: introduction, first half, second half, epilogue (or extra minutes for the home video). In this sense Avant2 could last 5 min, the first half 59 min, the second half 50 min: total 114 min. Adding 11 min of Avant1 we get 125 min, a more reasonable and plausible result. However I wonder: if part C and part D make up the second half, does that mean that C only lasts 9 minutes? It seems strange. As I suggested in the previous post, parts A, B, C of the other Rebuild movies should be checked for average statistical references.

Another possibility that comes to my mind is that the count is a clue to the release date, just like the countdown in Avant1. 5 months, 59 days and 50 hours. In 5 months it's March 4th. Adding 59 days results in May 2nd. Finally, considering another 50 hours we get 5 May. But, what about of 00? Even this idea doesn't seem very significant to me.

Can you think of anything else? Come on, crazies hypothesis!

If I remember the idea that Q was missing a fourth section came from a misunderstanding of an interview with (?) Megumi Ogata. I think she said that the film only had an A.B and C part, but that some of the reaction to it was probably because people felt that there should have been more/another section to Q.

It's been suggested (but I don't know the source without searching) that some of the imagery in the short until You come to me comes from a discarded ending of Q. Also some of the story board images in the background of Shiro Sagisu's Peaceful Times petit film.

It was just an Hypotesis, with no evidence whatsoever.
I mean the Children walking in the Red Wasteland was already in 3.0, making the scene longer would had made it redundand.
But I'm sure that the UYCTM and SSPF material will be used in Avant 2.
Also, with Avant 1 and 2, this will be the longest introduction before the titles in the Rebuilds Saga.

It's actually from a quote from Shiro Sagisu in the booklet of the Outtakes of Evangelion CD.

The quote is reported in a Minna No Eva YouTube video.

In a nutshell: this song was to be used in Q and the recording dates back to 25 July 2011. What is UYCTM? It can be revealed that it was the content that was supposed to be in Q.

If you hit the CC button, an English translation will appear.

To me this is a strong hint solidifying the "Q had a D-part thesis, the storyboard of which have been turnt into Until You Come To Me" - thesis. (as stated in the video itself)
This makes Q a lot more structurally interesting, imo. I guess Anno just didn't get part D to "work" on time. Gosh, I'm really looking forward to the Complete Records Collection now. Curious to see if this will just remain as is and reappear in Shin, or if it will be kind of discarded and rewritten (kinda like the original 3.0. Jikai Yokoku at the ed of 2.0).
