There'll always be something that can be fixed/adjusted. Even with the 3.33 adjustments, Shinji's collar appearing during an explosion still made its way onto the home video release. The scene where Kaworu is approaching Shinji in the morning to start their piano playing could use some work, it doesn't look that great. There's also the scene where he's introducing himself to Shinji where there's a close up on his face, one of his eyes is off to the side slightly so he looks kind of silly there.

I would guess that while it was officially announced in mid-April that Thrice Upon A Time was being delayed due to COVID-19 the decision was likely made weeks earlier in late March. That's a full three months out from the original release date of June 27,2020 and the film, while nearing completion, would absolutely not be finished. When the decision to delay was made most likely all production on the film halted. Animators and crew likely went home, isolated, focused on their families and staying COVID-19 free and maybe Khara even set it up so some animators could work remotely from home if needed.

With the film halted and full production work unlikely to happen I have to imagine Anno & his team have been given the opportunity to do what rarely is allowed to happen when a film enters production with a set release date, they've been able to spend the spent the last couple months just going over what has already been completed and figure out what finessing needed to be done without the feat of an impending release date. Need a new shot here, a scene there, an effect here, etc etc.

Now that production is back on the team is able to adjust, correct and improve on the mostly complete film they had on their hands. On the positive this just means Thrice Upon A Time is going to be that much better a film.

Still positive we won't see this until June 2021 at the earliest though.

I personally think they are straight up rewriting the movie still, probably in response to COVID. It seems like something Anno would do to me.

I don't know, it seemed that the majority of the movie was already finished, and the dubbing was even over.
Yeah, Anno uses to add scenes when he can (and with this delay he had the chance), but I don't think he'll change too much. I mean, the core of the movie is there.

Yeah, the movie was ready to be released, and the decision to move it wasn't made until that much prior to the airing date; completely rewriting the movie requires a ton of new footage being created, so that would be downright impossible if they plan on releasing it before 2022

I didn't wrote "completely rewrote" the movie, just rewrote. They could be changing the ending for example, or specific scenes.

Oh yeah, that makes more sense. I took "straightup" as synonymous with "from ground up"; I can see where you're coming from, but I think that's a question without answer

Yeah, you're right actually. You could always keep adding, changing. But I imagine nothing huge will be left.

Still positive we won't see this until June 2021 at the earliest though.

Yeah, I have come to accept this. And if it comes sooner, hey, nice surprise. At this point I'm not even looking forward to the film itself, cause its release seems like this unreal thing at this point. I'll be excited to see a slightly more revealing trailer. Although tbh the release of any sort of trailer is also a question mark at the moment.

One day we will see this film and it'll be amazing.

I'm wondering if maybe the animator's comments indicate the movie isn't actually finished. We know Khara has inherited a good deal of Gainax's own production hell. What if, when Corona hit Japan in February, the movie wasn't nearly finished as we'd like to believe and it actually threw a huge wrench in its progress? What if we're actually much farther from a release date than we might think?

No company would tell us otherwise, for better or worse. I'm bringing this up because there is quite a lot of precedent in Evangelion for that. 3-4 months of the final production stages, when the June 27th release date was announced on December 30th. Gainax was run by people that lacked all business sense with the company constantly nearing bankruptcy, and although I know that Khara didn't inherit their executives proper (though it does keep the King Records partnership), it did face some extremely messy production cycles for 2.0 and in all likelihood 3.0 as well - we don't even have the information in that case because they don't wish to reveal it until after Shin is released. They kept remaking the script again and again - at least 16 rewrites - until they literally had zero time left to do anymore. What's to say this didn't start all over again? Hopefully it didn't happen, of course, but it's not that big of a stretch as it might seem.

Khara isn’t Gainax.

There is no need or gain to be made from conspiracy theories. They announced a 2020 back in 2018 and set a June 27,2020 release date half a year in advance. They would have had a film ready for end of June. They were working on music back at the start of this year and music is usually one of the final elements of production.

The film is likely not finished because once the delay was announced everything was put on hold. They probably had a 90 to 95% complete movie that would have been done by late June but it wasn’t finished when the delay was set in mid April Now they’re back to work and are finalizing the feature. There’s nothing more to it than that.

And for a feature film? 16 rewrites isn’t out of the ordinary.

^^ This is pretty much true.

I live in Japan and the way marketing works, they pretty much want everything already finished before they start campaigning and soaking everything cultural-related with Eva. This is why Western movies come out later in Japan. 1. Because there's no piracy and 2. Because the marketing works. So from Pre-COVID (Feb) I was starting to see signs of increased presence. They already paid for the release date. Then we start getting blasted in August. So I'm thinking to myself. Ah, they probably tried to push the release date back a month since the country opened back up in August. So I'm talking to my friend and she's also an Eva fan and saying she's been seeing all the marketing every where and speculated by the rhythm of the marketing that it will be coming out soon. People are just starting to get back to the theatre so it's a game of wait and see at this point. Also they might have some time to make some final changes.

So that's just my take on it. I'm an optimist. It's pretty much done. They're just waiting to get bigger capacity in theatres because they literally need the whole domestic box office population on a release to make a good profit.
Oh, the clock is ticking out

I did not know this. Thank you for that information. American productions are more focused on constantly releasing small bits of info over the course of a year, so we get trailers that feature footage that doesn't appear in the final film simply because the studios have gone ahead and made a trailer for a film that hasn't fully been realized or finalized yet.

Movies that require large box office returns are in a state of limbo in the United States. I'm gonna use US films as a proxy for discussing Shin Eva even though the two productions don't work well as a one-to-one comparison simply because I'm more familiar with that kind of production process.

Movies like Trolls World Tour or Bill & Ted Face the Music can be released to Video on Demand services and still see modest profits because those were not big-budget movies to begin with. (And one of them was a children's film, which almost guarantees that it'll make a profit in the US.) Tenet and Mulan haven't been doing too well with their respective mid-pandemic release methods because those movies were basically built from the ground up to make all of the money in theaters in the first two weeks of their release. (Yes, Chris Nolan, I want to "experience Tenet in IMAX theaters." Just not now, or anytime soon.) It'll be interesting to see which big budget movies in the US does really well in the box office and why that is. (I'll bet all of the pre-Covid produced blockbusters are gonna fail in the box office either way.) I'm sure Shin Eva doesn't quite have the monstrous production spending behind it that larger US films have, but, respective of Japan's population, it'll still require a similar audience-to-theater ratio for the film to be profitable. I'm thinking the Japanese government handled the Covid pandemic better than the US government? If there's one thing that all of this American-style partisan political infighting did, it was delay any real plan being formed so that way we could get back to work ASAP, make that money again, and get that economy back up and running. The way the US government has handled this pandemic makes me think that we won't see profitable big-budget films for the next 5 - 10 years. (I'd love to be wrong, though.) If the Japanese government handled the pandemic better than Americans did, then their expensive movies like Shin Eva might still have a chance at being profitable a lot sooner than ours.

Another consideration in setting a firm date is simply not knowing the future. At the start of the pandemic, the 25th Bond film was delayed, and they announced a new date in November. Well, guess what, they needn't have bothered, because they've now realised they have to put it off again, so it has a new new date of April next year. Who knows if that will be possible...

In unrelated news, today (in Japan, atleast) marks the official 25th annivesary of the first Evangelion episode being broadcasted to Japan, and essentially, the birth of Evangelion in Japan. Cheers to that, I guess.

Right now, the @evangelion_co account on Twitter is posting some commentary on the show's 25th anniversary done by the cast members.
