1. already some supremely powerful Shin Godzilla energy in here (if you haven't seen it fucking watch it)
2. The shot with the tank barrel directing your eye diagonally towards the exact spot where sachiel tosses up surf, and then the seagull just nopes the fuck out, kino
3. Gendo's subtle shit-eating "you uhhhh you sure about that my dude" expression when the JSDF mook gloats over dropping a
4. Already off the bat it's obvious that Gendo and our boy Fuyu (who I still maintain is Samuel Beckett's lost twin) have significantly more agency over the situation than they're letting on, as if the framing of them in close-up from a low-angle while we look down at their nameless JSDF colleagues from a distance wasn't a screamingly deliberate giveaway (we first see the latter in a similarly intimidating profile, but without a clear view of their faces - "yup, disregard that they're actually not important")
5. I love Gendo's silly little big-boy elevator lift with the tiny hand-rail that they made just for him
6. Fucking hell Fuyu is tall
7. After rewatching the Rebuilds, it's striking how subtly different Shinji is from here right from the get-go. OG Shinji (based on my memory of this show, might change as I go on) is characterized as precocious and generally more perceptive than he likes to let on, whereas Rebuild Shinji is far more aggressive in how he shuts the world out, and later on in 1.0 displays a level of upfront acidity towards Misato that you really can't imagine him doing here
8. JSDF mook doing Gendo's own pose at him, with the shots reversed - now Gendo is the one we look down on from a slight distance, yet him being front-and-center with his smug expression lets us know A. what these people think of him and B. he's the one really in charge. Cutting from a medium shot of mook guy to Gendo and then to a wide shot of the former descending to wherever the fuck in Nerv the desk elevator gets off, unf
9. Aoba's Japanese voice actor is Dio. Let that percolate for a second
10. Yes everyone ignore the giant oedipus robot's hand ominously reaching out for her son no this is extremely normal it's actually not a hand, we just keep weather balloons in there
11. Gendo is such a bond-villain turbodork that he just has to have a tiny observation deck at the top of the hangar literally covered in CRT monitors so he can scowl at his shitty son in full 360 degree panorama (also reinforcing our impression of him as a powerful source of authority, as he scowls down at the characters and us in the audience, surrounded by what would essentially function as a full-on surveillance panorama, also the little shit has the strongest tempered glass in the world protecting him from a fucking girder as he looks down with a shit-eating grin, further cementing the notion that this guy is in control)
12. Misato's horrified objection to Ritsuko proposing that they place this diminuitive fragile child into a combat scenario with no training comes off as the first genuine, no-bullshit reaction she gives to anybody in this whole episode (apart from trying to do a vehicular murder-suicide with Shinji because he called her immature)
13. powerful star trek technobabble energy
14. Already we're seeing the seeds of Misato and Ritsuko's falling out as the latter acts as a coldly pragmatic foil going "nah bruh just put the kid in his cybermom"
15. "Don't die, Shinji-kun" well who the fuck drove him all the way from bumfuck hakone
16. gendo's iconic little smirk. He knows he's about to have a fantastic evening.
17. maternal authority figures flanking Shinji in profile, centered in the frame in front of Unit-01. very nice, much foreshadowing
