There is enough material that could be adapted in two seasons, with each one having 12 episodes.

I realize that more seasons could be made, but the popularity seems to have dissipated. I wish they would do one more season (6 eps even) to sort of wrap up the loose threads from the series/movie. The way they left it just seems so unfinished.

Considering most of the loose ends are still untied in the light novels, KyoAni would have to make up their own solutions, which could potentially be very good or very bad.

Unless there is a new light novel volume in the making, don't expect any new anime material for Haruhi. Only thing i can see for the near future is a second season of Nagato Yuki-chan to cover the rest volumes now that he manga is ending.

There is lots of material that has yet to be adapted into anime form. The next anime adaptation won't even be enough to cover all of Haruhi.

Here is the list of what is animated:

Season 1:
The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part One through Six
The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
Mystérique Sign
Remote Island Syndrome Part One and Two
Live Alive
The Day of Sagittarius
Someday in the Rain (a mini comic that is a few pages long illustrated by the author at the end of one book, but it was stretched out into an entire episode for the anime)

Season 2:
Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody
Endless Eight Part One through Eight
The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya Part One through Five

Movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

--------------------------------------------------------------
Here is what they animated versus what is available:

Book 1: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - Fully adapted in season one

Book 2: The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya - Fully adapted in the second season

Book 3: The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
-The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Mysterique Sign
-Remote Island Syndrome
-Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody

All four mini stories are adapted in season one (3 of them) and season two (the 4th one)

Book 4: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - Fully adapted as the movie

Book 5: The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Endless Eight
-The Day of Sagittarius
-Snowy Mountain Syndrome

The first two short stories are adapted in season one and season two, but the third short story about the winter vacation is not in anime form. It is about the same length as remote island syndrome, so roughly two episodes of anime content

Book 6: The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Live Alive
-The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina
-Love at First Sight
-Where Did the Cat Go
-The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina

The first two are adapted, but the last three short stories have enough content to be made into an episode each, so three episodes. The stories are about Kyon's old friend on the football team who falls in love with Nagato, a short story with the return of the talking cat, and a side story about Mikuru and Kyon saving a boy from being hit by a car who is an important person to the future according to future Mikuru

Book 7: The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya - The continuation right after the movie, long enough for about six episodes (like the first book) or another movie

Book 8: The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya
-Editor in Chief Full Speed Ahead
-Wandering Shadow

Both are kinda lengthy short stories, I would say 3 episodes each. One is about actually becoming a literature club and the other is a follow up to that episode with the computer club president disappearing, this time it's a park mystery with some dogs

Book 9: The Dissociation of Haruhi Suzumiya - The second year of high school begins, Kyon meets an old friend and the plot splits into 2 separate timelines. This is a very long story and continues into the next novels

Book 10 + 11: The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya - In Japan these are separate books, but in North America it's just one book. As states previously, this book(s) is a direct continuation of Book 9. Honestly, I am not sure if a movie would be able to cover these three books. It needs a whole season of the anime just to cover this story

Book 12: Yet to be released...but the author said the story is not yet over

--------------------------------------------------------------
Now if you do the math, we get 29 episodes (under the assumption that a book is equivalent to 6 episodes, and a season is equivalent to 12 episodes):

Snowy Mountain Syndrome = 2
Love at First Sight = 1
Where Did the Cat Go =1
The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina =1
The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya = 6
Editor in Chief Full Speed Ahead = 3
Wandering Shadow = 3
The Dissociation of Haruhi Suzumiya = 6
The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya = 6 (this is being very generous, might be longer if they want to do it properly, since this is two books fused into one)

Just look at how many story important characters have never even been introduced in the anime! My point, we got barely half of the Haruhi story adapted.

In addition to Stan's point (nice post!), I don't think it's necessarily fair to say Hirano's wrecked her career. August of 2011 was certainly a bad month for her (for medical reasons as well as the scandal), but she signed with a new agency at the end of that month and has been acting pretty steadily ever since. She's also put out two albums since then and doing a bunch of VA work in video games, so she seems to be doing okay.

The real problem, at least IMO, seems to be that the light novels have stalled out and interest in the anime community seems to have petered out with them. A new series seems pretty unlikely, and I don't think that'd be any different even if Hirano hadn't gotten hit by a stupid scandal.

Nice work Stan!

As i said before, there is still plenty of material left to adapt. The reason we don't have a new Haruhi anime is because we don't have a new novel. When/If there will be a new novel then it's very possibly we will have a new anime season/movie/ova.

Our best chance now is a second and final season of The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan. The manga is ending and another season would be perfect to close up. If a second season won't happen it will be probably because of a character that appears later in the manga (and in the novels) that never appeared in any anime adapted material and they may think that a spin off anime is not the best way to introduce a character that plays a big role in the novels.

The Haruhi soundtrack is coming out this summer, and the promotion for it has her Voice Actress promise more Haruhi in 2016. Very vague, could be more merchandise, but considering 2016 is the shows 10th anniversary (yes, S1 is a decade old, I feel old!) maybe we'll get a treat!

Nooo not more nagato yuki chan, that show was made of mediocrity, there shouldnt have even been one season of that.If their going to make a haruhi spinoff I'd like to see something that actually has some sort of creativity behind it.

In case anyone is interested, Funimation will be releasing a 10th Anniversary Blu-ray box set including Seasons 1 and 2, the chibi series, and The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki. The film isn't included, but the box set will have an open slot for an eventual Blu-ray release of that, as well. You can also buy the original series and spin-off separately, but the chibi series will only be available in the box. It's going to be released in September.

The set looks great, I might need to sell my Japanese BD Box and get this one instead.

It's also very funny how they worded it, no movie was confirmed, they just said there is an empty spot for something else...
Haha, very nice foreshadowing.

But the film is the best part of the franchise, and The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki is the worst...

Wow, already 5 years went by since I said the above :D

Well here are some unexpected news, book 12 has been announced for November 25th, 2020! AND it is getting a simultaneous digital release in the West in English (with the print to follow shortly). In addition to that, the older novels are getting a re-print in the West.

The new novel will contain 3 short stories, two of which have previously been published in an artbook and magazine but not collected in a novel, and the last one being brand new never before released.

The last novel released in 2011 in Japan, which marks this the first new Haruhi novel in 9 years. Ironic how the news dropped on August 31st, the same day as when Kyon broke out of the endless eight time loop. Things are starting to look up.

Kind of had a double take moment for Kyon's seiyuu. "Wait, he's how old?" (39 ftr)

I forgot that's it's been more than a decade since the original series came out. -o-;
