I hate it when a comedy tries to go dramatic; I don’t care about the elections for the school council presidency and I don’t care about the tragic back-story of a side character. Try making me laugh instead.

And the whole "Shirogane figures it out" Lolwut? How could you know any of this? Why would you care to know any of this?

Am I to believe that these kids can somehow crack phone records, and then infer what happened? And they'll just do that because "WE have to know 100% what happened IN EVERY CASE."

Do they do this for every student who applies that looks like a delinquent?

A whisker Away

This is not as good as A Silent Voice, but if you want an anime that deals with depression but does not go in to it as deeply as Silent Voice this is for you.

SPOILER: Show
Its also the first Japanese film I've seen deal with divorce and its dark side (Which I've heard in Japan is kind of taboo sort of how it used to be in the 80's in Britan.) So it's kind of jarring in places when you see people questioning Miyo about her new mom and if she's feeding her right. Its made very clear her real mom ran out because she has mental health issues which need fixing or she married too young or that her dad failed to put on a rubber and also bears some blame because her parents look very young even her new mother looks mid 20's.

I wish they'd kind of focused more on the cat tree town element as that is the most interesting part of the movie and who the cat mask seller was as I don't think he was a cat to me he screamed yokai pretending he was a cat he's also such an evil snarky bastard you really cheer when all the human cats he betrayed kick his worthless ass and beat the shit out of him.

Also, both Miyo and Kento both have depression hers manifests its self by being overly happy while he inverts and is cold and shows indifference and though I get Miyo's problems and how lonely she is and desperate she is for love I can't condone her stalking in this as its really bad like on the same level as a male stalker...and though there are consequences and even her friends tell her to stop stalking its stops the film being as good as it could be and it plays to the trope love will fix it all which isn't true to real life as you need a therapist.

I also wish they'd made the kids the same age as the ones in A silent Voice like older teenagers rather than middle school because I kind of couldn't buy the leads getting together and it lasting since their both 11/12.

OreGairu Season 3, Ep1.

FINALLY HERE, like a miracle... Aaand they leave out Yukino's conversation with Haruno.

And Haruno walking Hiki back to the station.

They're going to have to flashback these moments, they set up way too much here.

SPOILER: Show
Love how the show connects the "parental freedom" given to Yukino, to Haruno saying "Do you even have a self?" I wasn't thinking of that line when I read this scene in the manga but they go perfectly together, adding another implication to the two's relationship.

Yukino has freedom, except for aiming at what she actually wants (her Dad's job), which is Haruno's territory. That's left her indecisive and ungrounded. But now she'll go for what she wants.

Equally, Hiki's unease and acceptance during Komachi's "bowing" scene is pretty well conveyed. The seeking of attention while also ribbing on each other is welcomed TTL sibling interaction. It's part of what this series does best.

Re-adapting the left out moment from Season 1/Cultural Festival where Hiki says "I love you!" to Kawa-something-san was adorable.

But I'am disturbed thinking that these last two are moments of "Not-best-girls-giving their-regards, exits-stage-left". Because it includes Komachi, and that is creepy Hikigya, you damn sis-con.

Komachi has a smoother face this season. Maybe it's from nodding off on her desk while studying?

It's been backlog and rewatch time for me while the stalled spring season roster reboots itself as the summer line-up, with nothing much of interest amongst the few new shows.

So, I ran through all three seasons of Overlord, which was amusing enough to hold my interest as guilty pleasure for D&Ders, and am now working through Fist of the Blue Sky - Regenesis, being a sequel to, rather than a reboot of, the autumn '06 Fist of the Blue Sky. For a show about larger than life manly martial artists having two-fisted adventures, the somewhat janky CG animation is tolerable.

And all this interspersed with rewatching Flying Witch and Toji no Miko, while leaving an increasing number of other titles stalled (almost all of which are from long ago and so already complete), meaning to get back to sometime.

Deca-Dance

Humans are the NPCs / People of the Land for a video game played by Aliens that looks a lot like Mortal Engines.

One of the humans who reminds me of Finn for no particular reason is wondering why they can't be out there killing the MoBs like the Players instead of clean up duty.

It just so happens that every so often, one of the humans displays troubling behaviors that the Devs interprets as "bugs" and tasks one of the players to take care of them. Then to recover their gene-seed for the Call Forward.

This is that player alien BMO's story about why he decides not to kill this particular human. And not let himself starve to death.

Japan Sinks

Well, I'm done with this. I doubt I'll see a worse disaster than this this season. It started with an excellent episode, which I really believed announced good things and then proceeded to sink (heh) with such force that it went into the category of so bad it's good in a matter of two episodes, recovering slightly near the end, but never returning to the quality of the first episode.
About the message of this anime, it is quite obvious, and even if for some reason the audience did not understand it, they basically say it directly in these last episodes.
SPOILER: Show
Things change and that's okay, don't be a nationalistic prick and youtubers are literal gods

This anime has a lot of baffling decisions, but making a character that is essentially an anime Pewdiepie is one of the most ridiculous. I'm not going to spoil what happens, because it really is quite incredible, but lets just say that your mind will be baffled by the YOUTUBER of all things being the smartest character.

The animation was comically bad, the music repetitive, the backgrounds weak. I say without reservation that this must be the worst anime I saw from this studio.
Despite this, it was quite funny to see this roller coaster of stupidity derail and kill my brain, so:

Yeah.... I had high hopes for Japan Sinks: 2020 and the first episode truly is phenomenal and pretty much an excellent showpiece for how to elegantly build tension, introduce characters, drama and pay off on spectacle. All with an excellent color palette. I was ready for a masterpiece when that first episode ended.

Then the whole thing quickly went downhill. It felt like Saru had their A-team of writers and animators focus all their attention on the premiere episode and the rest of the series was made up by like a C team. There's a whole lengthy arch with a cult that was just the worst.

There are some small moments that work in the back half but yeah, it's a loss.

I honestly had not made the connection that the one guy was essentially Pewdiepie and that makes it worse.

Rent-A-Girlfriend episode 1

It was a fun time to be alive watching Kazuya the MC walk a fine line between endearing to despicable as well as the main harem babe Chizuru pull off a nice personality akin to Naru from Love Hina, from the way she talks to Kazuya when her true colors come out right down to her college hairstyle and clothing. Also, the fact that Kazuya's parents come off as domineering to him yet are scared stiff of the authoritarian grandma is another reason to check this gem out.

I’ve been watching NGE on Netflix, along with JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures and Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans.

I’ve been a fan JoJo since watching part 1 on Toonami. And on the internet, I’ve seen tons of JoJo memes. My favorite series would be part 3, Stardust Crusaders. The final battle between Jotaro and Dio is just epic, especially with the ever famous steam roller scene.

And Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans is another good series I saw on Toonami, so it was good to see it after a while. I sometimes wonder what the cast of NGE would be like in the Gundam universe. But that’s a bit of different stories.

Ah wait yes I was thanks for clarication. ^_^

I was probably mixing them up as they both had awful controversy's surrounding them but Pewdiepie's was about racist jokes and leaning to the alt right, where as Logan's was disrespecting cultures outright. Both are not people I'd want to emulate in an anime though, for these reasons.

Rent-a-Girlfriend Ep. 3

This show is trash to some degree, but I'm enjoying it because every few moments I want to smother the MC and grind his face into the pavement.

That whiny, horny, entitled 20-something mindset I never occupied, because I was a Hachiman. And since Oregiaru S3 is also going on, and they release new episodes at nearly the same time, the contrast is interesting for me to watch.

One faps or thinks about fapping while staring at the legs of his ex, the other treats girls like if they were his little sister. We shall see who the biggest loser is.

The female lead is no saint, but it feels like a constant "bestowing of favors" on her part to show him emotional guidance, and context through which to judge his feelings. Doesn't even charge him extra for it. She's like Reigen from Mob Psycho 100; giving their customers not exactly what they were asking for, but certainly what they needed.

SPOILER: Show
And just like Kazuya, I choose to judge positively the scene where she offers emotional support as just her being vulnerable, and not simply a hook to keep wringing the money out of him.

Would you argue that Rent-a-Girlfriend is in a way an homage to Love Hina? Pardon my naivete but I have only seen episode 1 of Rent-a-Girlfriend and my Love Hina knowledge comes from viewing the Again OVA.

I'm not well-watched on this genre, so this could be true and I'm just in dark. I also watched Love Hina 15-16 years ago.

Most of my thoughts:
SPOILER: Show
Keitaro in Love Hina is a ronin (and spends most of the series like that if I recall correctly), while Kazuya is in college from the start.

The childhood connection between Keitaro and Haru as well as "who is the special someone I made that promise to...?" were big plot points in Love Hina. Kazuya has no such connection, at best there is a tangential thing between his and Chizuru's grandmothers, and that was settled in the same episode it was brought up.

The other girls in R-a-G don't sound very similar to the long tropy zoo we get in Love Hina.

Chizuru is same age as Kazu and goes to school with him, whereas Naru was 3 years younger than Keitaro.
Chizuru is trying to be an actor which works into why she does Rental Girlfriend work. Wasn't Naru trying to be a lawyer?

But I think what you're getting at is that Naru is bookish and Tsundere, and would hide her looks from guys. A tactic Chizuru also employs for a slightly different reason (to hide her identity from customers).

The look they both go with is twin-braids with glasses. Could that be a Love Hina reference? Possibly.

I've been watching Japan Sinks too, and what I thought was interesting about it was that the main characters are of mixed Japanese/Filipino descent. Given how ethnically homogenous Japan is, this is both unusual and refreshing for an anime.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

Goblin Slayer: Goblin’s Crown-
30 minutes are spent at the start recapping material you’ve already seen (same animation, no new scenes); followed by an ordinary episode, except roughly twice the regular length. It’s just more of the same old Goblin Slayer; which is what I expected, and wanted, yet didn't satisfy me.

Bare-bones plot with no twists, no character growth or new, interesting characters introduced. At some point a regal-looking Goblin showed up near the end, but its “Goblin Crown” was never a plot point, making me ponder the significance of the feature’s subtitle.
Nothing noteworthy regarding action scenes, the animation quality was identical to the rest of the show and the title character is still rendered with stiff, conspicuous CG, which was unfortunate. Heaven forefend at little extra sparkle be put into your movie.

I had to chuckle at the shoe-horned cameo by the buxom redhead at the end, she had no business being in the guild building and the story never required her presence, but hey- this is the Goblin Slayer movie, right? Got to sneak in an appearance by… wait, what’s her name?... “Cow Girl”? That’s actually her name? Blimey…
Come to think of it- very few names are given in this world. Most characters are only identified by their race or vocation. What are they, Naknadans?

This is the worst kind of “movie” you can put together for a TV show.

Non Non Biyori Movie: Vacation-
Short recap followed by the regular NNB fluff, only twice the regular length.
Same characters, little change or growth, same quality as the TV show… so it was pretty much perfect.
Why was this so much more satisfying than Goblin Slayer? The absence of sexual assault certainly helped; but giving the viewer a tiny, emotional hook made all the difference: How will Natsumi’s holiday-friendship develop and end?

Pure comfort.

Currently watching:
  • Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out- Occasionally funny and occasionally sweet. “Put that ass away” is my favourite line of the year so far.
  • Rent-a-Girlfriend- Just keep lying, lying makes everything better.
  • OreGairu / My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU: 3rd Season- It feels like exercise, watching this. You just can't relax. Every other line of dialog can potentially break someone.
  • Monster Girl-Doctor- Not impressed with the premise, setting, characters, or even the aesthetic of the show after 2 episodes, but I seem to be drawn to silly monster-girl shows like these regardless.
  • Interviews with Monster-Girls- See? Except this one is good. (Rewatch)

Having spun it out until the Spring season resumed, I finally finished Fist of the Blue Sky : Regenesis, which was a decent enough hokey martial arts fest, with new ultimate techniques being handed out almost every episode. On the down side, you do have to simply ignore the sudden retcon of the maguffin after the mid-point timeskip, not worry too much about the chronology, and sigh deeply when the scene cuts from some tense action to the comic relief villains left over from the previous series. And why is it that the mid-season change of OP/ED is always for the worse?

Which is a good point to segue into Railgun T, which, having paused at the end of one arc, now resumes with another, with a similar change of furniture, but otherwise being the mixture as before, which will at least give me something on-going to watch for the rest of the season (not like there's anything else that appeals).
