...but I think it is reductive to call them cash grabs...

I implore you to go watch the "making offs" in which they talk to the staff. If you consider that Japanese people tend to be more reserved with their opinion, you can see that they were very unpleased with what was going on with the sequels.

I also disagree strongly about the animation being cheaply put together. I think both sequels are well animated, and I'd even argue Progressive is worth watching for its animation alone, if one is a big sakuga fan.

No, no, no. There are some great cuts, but overall the animation is miles away from the original. I consider the original to boast one of the most consistent showcases of genuinely breathtakingly brilliant cut of animation I know of. Progressive if functional, at best. If you're interested here's a YouTube video that captures my feelings pretty well (there is a well made breakdown on animation in the latter half)

robersora, I find it interesting that you compared these sequels to Diebuster, because, while I think it's a good anime, it's a terrible sequel, and doesn't even reach the feet of the Hideaki Anno masterpiece. I guess we have the opposite opinion here.

Diebuster caught the spirit of the original - a love letter to Mecha rooted in sensibilities of the time it was made in. It's a very loose sequel that ties into the original very cleverly, in my opinion.

I'll give the making offs a look, but I'll just say that being unpleased doesn't mean that there isn't passion in the sequels. Again, it probably would have been better if they weren't sequels, but some producers having green lit the project with the intention of making money doesn't mean the animators and everyone else just went trough the motions when making these works.

I agree that the original is better animated. What I disagree is calling Progressive "functional, at best". That criticism could be given to Alternative, perhaps, but Progressive is only functional if you compare it to the very best animated anime. Otherwise, it is clearly high above average.

The only part of Diebuster that to me feels connected to the original is the ending.
Otherwise, the mood is so different it might as well be a completely original anime. I don't think it justifies it's existence as a sequel. It's too loose for me. Would that much have been lost by just calling it Diewhatever and changing the ending, thus cutting its connection to the original?

I'm not trying to change your opinion on Progressive. Going by what you wrote, you clearly don't like it, and I understand some of your reasons. All I'm trying to do is show that I did like it, and that there are others that can like it, including fans of the original.

That's true, I'm sure Bahi JD was very passionate about his parts for example. But the sentiment I got from the making off was "Baka Gaijin, You can't just make a sequel to FLCL"

Well, most Anime is trash. But this is the sequel to FLCL, so of course I'm not gonna compare it to trash. But this is a matter of perspective, I guess.

The whole premise of Diebuster hinges on the fact, that humanity sealed Warp Technology and imprisoned themselves into our Solar System, to avoid getting fucked by the huge aliens who live in the depths of the universe, that terrorized humanity in Gunbuster. Then over Millenia losing knowledge about it, having Topless occur which triggers the self-defense system of the Solar System. It's Anime d'jour, but To me this is a much more interesting way to create an addition to a story which ending involved a time skip of +10 000 years. At least it's better than "Haruko's wacky hijinks but this time with a girl"

That's ok, I just struggle to accept you giving this an 8/10

The animation is really good from my perspective, but I do watch about 10-15 anime every season, so you can imagine that in comparison to most of these(nearly all, really) Progressive is better looking. As you said, it's about perspective.

It's just a number. I also struggle with you not liking Shin Sekai Yori, but this is ultimately all subjective. There are people that somehow don't like Evangelion, and I'll certainly never understand that.

Did anyone else get a frankly offensive & passive aggressive private message from a member who rarely posts in this forum telling them to "Stop talking about dubs" or was it just me? Because I sure got one for posting an opinion in this topic thread over two years ago.

I admit, I'm not crazy about dubs myself (though the French dub of Porco Rosso is the only way to watch that film) but it's not exactly a topic I regularly bring up in discussion nor do I say things like they shouldn't exist or that people who enjoy them are "doing it wrong". They're just not for me.

I also revisited the two FLCL sequels a few months ago when I bought the Blu-ray set and I like them. They're super messy and the team clearly didn't have the time the original FLCL team did but they're solid watches. I wouldn't be against a FLCL 4.

No, I haven't. I've expressed my dislike of dubs in this forum more than once, but I don't recall anything like that.

Lol. It was very weird to be told to stop talking about something I really never talk about. I mean if it comes up in conversation and I have something I want to share I won't not post. It's a forum for discussion. Like, I'd get it being an issue if all I ever did was talk about dubs being bad nonstop but I literally haven't thought about the FLCL dub since 2018 and aside from maybe a post or two when the new Netflix dub came out last summer I can't recall bringing up the issue again.

Oh well. Was just curious.

Thanks!
