NGE Blu-ray (UK)

Buried in the middle of this AnimeNewsNetwork story is the announcement that the company Anime Limited (All the Anime) is going to release Neon Genesis Evangelion, Evangelion Death (True)2 and The End of Evangelion on Blu-ray in the UK at some point in 2021.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-05-30/anime-limited-to-also-offer-b-the-beginning-anime-on-blu-ray-in-u.s/.160099

No further details like what kind of dub they’ll have and is it UK exclusive but it’s a surprising development considering Netflix’s rights to Eva at the moment. Maybe their exclusivity deal for English markets was for two years which would make a Summer 2021 release likely.

Either way, hopefully a US Blu-ray release will quickly follow. I imagine it would.

(Having posted this I think it might fit more appropriately in the Everything Else Evangelion board... is there a way to move it? Thank you.)

This is very nice to see. I imagine it's almost certain they'll be using the Netflix/Khara dub though.

"UK exclusive" is a bit of a misnomer, seeing all of their releases can also be bought in mainland Europe...

But well, the source is American, and they still seem to have some kind of issue with understanding that the UK is not some kind of floating magical island that's disconnected from the rest of the continent.

This is such weird news and unexpected news. I'm definitely going to try to get myself one of these.

I suppose I'll need to get a region B player.

Aside from region coding, there aren't any major concerns with importing blu-rays like there were in the past with NTSC/PAL DVDs, right?

I'm very interested in this release. Just needs to be a reasonable price and I'll be all over it.

I accidently got the UK version of Chariots of Fire a few years ago and I was able to play it fine, though when I first put the disk in my machine, I went to the special features first as I too wasn't sure it would play. It went straight to the main feature. I hope this helps a little.

Anime Limited is known for running high quality limited editions, but they usually provide cheaper version too.

Also guys, Anime Matsuri, they streaming convention is running until today evening and you can buy a sick Evangelion Hoodie only today! Just a little heads up!

No, nothing like that any more, thank goodness! As for the region coding, who knows? Many more Blurays are not region coded than DVDs - and specifically, the Khara DVD box of Eva is region coded, but the Bluray box isn't.

You mean Cloud Matsuri, which as far as I know has no connection to Anime Matsuri in Houston. Also, the Evangelion hoodie in question is not a convention or timed exclusive. You can get it from Atsuko at your leisure. I'm not familiar with them, but they claim to produce officially licensed goods.

I wonder if Thrice Upon A Time being delayed due to Covid-19 is a cause for this happening.

Aside from merchandise, helping out as freelance on a few other projects and the deal they signed with Netflix in 2018 for NGE to be on the streaming service the studio hasn't had many new sources of income. Summer 2020 was supposed to be their big moment with 3.0+1.0 most likely being the biggest movie of the year in Japan AND a source for so many (SO MANY) merchandise deals. Now all that is on hold due to Covid-19 for who knows how long until it's safe to reopen theaters and Khara feels it's the right moment to release the film. The film could still be a 2020 release or it could be held off until 2021. Only a handful of people behind the scenes really know right now.

I would figure if Khara wanted to partially make up for an unexpected delay/loss in money they've got the full rights to NGE and in light of the current situation might be willing to be less stringent with their (clearly) very high price and demands.
Hopefully they're making home-video release deals with every market that would like one and it can be a good benefit for everyone.
If a US release isn't announced soon (I think there will be one) I'll definitely be buying this UK release in 2021.

Was super excited when I first heard the news, but I just hope whatever company releases this Set in the U.S., we won't get that annoying "replacing the Kanji tel-ops with English text" that Funimation butchered Shin Godzilla (seriously the reason I didn't purchase the U.S. Bluray) and the Eva Rebuilds with....I mean, wouldn't subtitling text take far less time, too? :misatogeh:

Anyway, this NGE bluray, whenever it gets Stateside, will absolutely be a Day 1 Preorder for me :boingy: , and I'm not one to preorder anything. (Heck, FF7 Remake was the only time I Day 1 preordered a game, haha. Always support your old time favorites!)

Thank goodness I got myself a 4k Region Free Blu-ray player in the nick of time. Looks like this will be the third time I purchase the Eva series again. :hahaha:

If you have a region free Blu-ray player with Worldwide Voltage and a Internal Pal/NTSC Conversion, you're all set. The site I linked is where I got mine.

I think there's more factors than this.
Anime Limited is very much focused on limited-run high quality, high priced releases of Anime, their brand is much more of a prestige thing, as opposed to Funimation who basically sell most of their physical discs in very cheap packaging and are very preoccupied with quantity.
Also, Anno might have been soured to do business with Funi after the debacle that was the first theatrical run of 3.33. Then there's the fact about positioning your brand. Perception of public changes a lot when you're part of Netflix who are all about "high-quality-cable-like-entertainment" as opposed to Funimation which stands much more for "cheap disposable low quality Anime bullshit for children and teenagers". Look at how Evangelion merchandise has changed - they are going much more for a "prestige normie appeal" nowadays.

So I think it might very well be likely that the "unreasonable high price demand" is the Japanese way of saying "NO" to being a part of an Otaku Plattform who plays their artwork in front of a roaring, uncultured crowd of teenagers who have never learnt to engage with art.

I was under the impression that NTSC/PAL was a thing of the past with the advent of the HD standard?

It is. My post to The Eva Monkey was confusing, sorry. I meant to write that it's simply much better to buy a Region Free Blu-ray player that has neat features like NTSC/PAL coverter as well as (which I didn't mention in my previous post) being DVD region free that way you can watch ANYTHING from ANYWHERE around the world.

Edit: Wrong company  :

Just don't expect much in terms of bonuses, even with the limited editions. The Limited editions are slightly more expensive than the regular ones and have a limited run (but no numbering or certificates or the like).

For their Gundam releases the limited edition and the regular edition is basically the same concerning the discs, except that the limited edition includes a bonus item (first half of a Gundam series: collectors box, second half: "artbook" - I put quotes around it because the quality of the artbook ain't that high at all).

Most anime Blurays from Europe are region B. The region free one I own (Bubblegum Crisis) is ironically from a American company.

Welll that depends. I'm by no means an expert on which company distributes what, but Gundam shows almost all have a 500 bucks limited edition thing that comes with way more garbage than you'd ever reasonably expect; I don't fully expect that to happen for Eva, but I wouldn't be surprised either if something that is the only limited edition we're getting

That sounds like the UK equivalent to Nozomi Entertainment in the US. Their release of several Gundam shows and of Utena followed a similar business model. Honestly, I had always hoped Nozomi would get the US license for NGE over Funimation, but I’ve pretty much given up on that dream.
