The movie that's now being streamed on Netflix is effectively an indie movie not one of the biggest theatrical events in Japanese cinema. This small movie of Colorido just profits immensely from the media exposure, and if Netflix gives them ~100 000$ for distribution they are in the green and don't have to care about worldwide distribution themselves.

There you go, I revert back to my stance that the chances of Evangelion doing this is zero.

The chances of Shin Eva having a streaming world premiere are more than extremely unlikely, but I though I’d at least bring up the stupid AMC flex just to hash it out in the forum in the context of Eva’s delayed release.

I'm sorry if there is any reply directed at me that I'm ignoring right now. I'm pretty busy, but I'll come back to the topic. I just wanted to share this post because I had the strangest feeling reading it. I didn't think I'd ever read other people have the same opinion on the cinema thing, or a similar opinion. And top if it it's coincidence I saw it.

I don't know if I agree with all of what's said or if I'd come to the same conclusions, but maybe this is relevant?

https://bogleech.tumblr.com/post/616749800666300416/bogleech-are-they-sure-they-meant-to-write-the

Edit: OK I read the rest of the topic, I had to.
Very different opinions on this. And honestly I can see the arguments for it possibly happening or it being unlikely. Maybe the one positive in all this is that uncertain times makes us reconsider how we do things and why we do them how we do them, regardless of what the outcomes is. If something changes, I guess that would make people like me sorta happy. If it stays the same, I guess that means it's juat how it should be regardless of circumstances.

Actual edit: Sorry about the double post. I wanted to edit the prior post but accidentally quoted it. And the delete button doesn't appear for this one.
merged the posts -robersora

Another edit: Has quarantine finally destroyed my ability to perceive reality as it actually is, or did AMC's Aron really give a super villain speech?

At the rate this is going, it seems everything will go (mostly) back to normal by the end of July or so. Still surprised they opened up the cinemas so fast. I don't even know when they will open here in Portugal.

Theaters in Tokyo did officially close and still are for the immediate future. But I think some provinces across the country that weren't heavily affected remained open in some capacity. The April 2020 box office in Japan was -96% under what it was in April 2019 but that's still not zero. (Who was this 3.7% who looked around at the world and said "I'll risk it"?)

I hope Japan can pull it off and come through this first wave relatively okay. There are countries proving it can be done. And the positives of wearing masks cannot be overstated with some of the science saying the population wearing masks outside the house can cut new cases down by up to, if not more, than 80%.

I still think reopening theaters before there's some kind of effective antiviral against Covid-19 is risky (the science is promising and I hope by the end of the summer the world will have several proven medicines in mass production that can lessen the effect of the virus to really lessen the CFR) since prolonged exposure to an asymptomatic person in a closed environment - like a restaurant or movie theater - increases risk exponentially and it only takes a few or even one especially contagious cluster to set back progress.

Hope everyone is staying safe.

I changed the +96% to the intended -96% - robersora

Maybe Japan is really better and this a possibility. I think the months of quarantine took their toll on me. I have this constant feeling of "Why don't we make absolutely sure and continue as is so the effort wasn't for nothing?" It's crazy how my opinions have varied over these months.
But Japan isn't Spain, and I'm no expert.

So bringing this back to Eva. What could this mean? Rereleasing films like Shin Godzilla seems like an experiment/way to make back some money that was lost. But actual new releases? Is Eva at all possible soon?
I still have no idea what the future is for this movie.

Well only around 100 theaters reopened in Japan. A quick Google search says Japan in 2019 had 3,583 total cinema screens across the country. I don't know how many auditoriums these roughly 100 theaters had or even if these theaters had all auditoriums running at full capacity or were just a skeleton operation with one or two auditoriums running a handful of shows a day but I would guess more than 90% to 95% of auditoriums in Japan are still dark and it will take months for them to get back to almost normal business. China tried to reopen theaters in April but had to quickly shutter them again when it led to a few clusters and are planning to attempt reopening next month (June) so I think theaters reopening anywhere is going to be a touch and go process.

Toho & Khara likely won't even consider scheduling a release date for Thrice Upon A Time until theaters are back up & running in Tokyo since that likely accounts for the majority of their business. If these 100 theaters are able to stay open that's a very positive sign and could lead to more theaters opening and so on.

But for now it's still very much wait and see like all things right now. Really things are out of Toho & Khara's hands if they're being responsible and following guidelines from health officials. A late 2020 release could be feasible but I wouldn't expect to hear much over the next two or so months.

Its just not economically viable to release 3+1 in today's climate. atm Japan has covid-19 numbers... Confirmed: 16,385 Deaths: 777
btw the face mask culture Japan has; originated from the 1918 spanish flu pandemic... in jp it was called sumo disease; because it was traced back to a Sumo match.

I wonder if Khara already had contractual obligations to cinemas... If the case, then an online distributed film on a streaming service would be impossible. I personally highly doubt any Japanese based corporation would do something so initiative.

I would like to point out that theaters were booked seat to seat for the last Heaven's Feel movie and the only reason people didn't go is because the theaters shut down; people in Japan were definitely willing to risk it for a movie that wasn't going to make anywhere near a splash as Eva.

I would not under estimate the popularity of Fate in Japan. Evangelion would probably outdraw it, but I don't think it's as wide of a margin as you suggest.

Fate's box office is much more dependent on the really hardcore Otaku, which is a big niche, but very insular... Evangelion meanwhile is ingrained enough into the mainstream consciousness it kinda transcendent that crowd a little bit -> there were a lot of normies mingled in-between the Otaku even when Q was streamed.

All about Japan's covid policy is that they postponed the 2020 Olympics to 2021, if the government is willing to go that far then its likely that they will limit movie theaters.

according to this article https://variety.com/2020/film/asia/japan-cinemas-movie-theaters-reopening-1234605215/ Japan started reopening theaters cautiously in may 11th
On May 11 the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that it was arranging to lift the state of emergency for the 34 prefectures least affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The remaining 13, including Tokyo and Osaka, are still under emergency advisories, which include theater closures, until the end of the month.

I obviously would still be for a digital release. If it's a cinema release, I don't care anymore when it comes out. I would even go as far as saying that if they insist on a cinema release I hope it doesn't happen anytime soon. I don't think I want any news stories discovering Eva lead to new infections. This virus has done enough damage and Eva shouldn't be tainted by something like that. Hope they (Toho) know what they are doing.

I probably wouldn't be able to see the film till 2021 or who knows, maybe 2022, and I don't have an iota of an idea of what my life will be like at that point. So specific dates in that time frame wouldn't mean too much to me yet. I just hope when I can finally see it I will have the time the film deserves to watch it, analyze it, dissect it, etc.

2020 would have been pretty ideal to watch it for me, but the release year of Eva sadly coincided with one of the worst years of our lives. A lesson learned here for me is to expect the unexpected, even with the things you are most excited for.

Btw Spain is much better but I'll still be careful. You won't see me many places I otherwise would have been. I think any country should be careful regardless of improvements.

Yeah, I'd also say that it's better safe than sorry in that regard.
As one movie theater put it - "Cinema closed until real life doesn't feel like a movie. Stay safe, be kind"
I'd rather wait another two years than have it cause another wave; besides, I think that the movie will be much more enjoyable if you don't have to worry if you've caught the plague while seeing it.

EDIT: And that marks my 1000th post on this forum. Interesting feeling, and feels weirdly fitting to have it on this topic of all places

Yeah, this captures it.

And waiting two years would just seem crazy, that's why I'd be for a digital release. But on the other hand, this year eclipses that as far as crazy goes. I'd accept it even if it would be sad.

Considering how 2020 is going, I'll consider it an absolute win if I manage to be alive when the movie is released.
