I would be beyond shocked if Khara, after Thrice Upon A Time has gone through its theatrical run and maybe even had an initial home video release, doesn't put out some kind of Super Duper Deluxe Boxset of the Four Films that would include new special features, goodies, and maybe even one last final pass on all the films to fix tiny errors or even add a new scene or line or two.

Yeah, same. Something like that will definitely be coming - the only question is if it will be available for a reasonable price, or only in the form of one of those ridiculous 50.000 yen special collector's edition packs, like a certain other big and popular mecha franchise likes to do

If they do, I would love Funimation to release those 4K discs. But 4K anime in the US is almost unheard of.

That's true. Any true super duper release would be Japanese specific unless some company wanted to go the extra distance. Most anime doesn't really benefit from 4K so it's not necessarily something that needs to be done but the later Rebuild Eva films would likely benefit.

By the way, is there any anime available in the US on 4K? I know AKIRA has been confirmed for a 4K release sometime in 2020 but I can't think of any others. Is that the first?

It depends on your definition of anime, but the Chinese CGI movie Nezha got a 4K Blu-ray release in the States courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment. That’s the only one that I can think of.

I don't know if the release date stuck but if it has then it's coming out in Japan on Friday. There was a planned IMAX exclusive theatrical re-release set for Japan in April with an international IMAX run to follow but I'm pretty certain that never happened for obvious CoronaReasons. Hopefully they'll reschedule and run the film when it is safe to do so. Would love to see the movie on a giant screen.

A US release was announced last summer for "Early 2020". No updates since but should still happen.

So, how big does the screen need to be for one to even notice the difference between HD and 4K? Would Jo, Ha and Q even profit from those? I feel like one shot of the 8th Angel in particular was always borderline suspension breaking for me... Same with the Wunder. (Though when I was watching it in Cinemas I was so in awe by it's otherworldly surrealist beauty I didn't mind it so much - but upon multiple rewatches one tends to see the seams in cloth, you know= Wouldn't added resolution make the jank integrated CG even more obvious?

Probably a screen size of 55 to 65 inches?

I myself don't think the films would benefit much from an upgrade to 4K since pretty much no animation is done at that level of detail. A lot of titles would have to be upscaled and that can introduce more issues. It's not my field but I think while Akira, Studio Ghibli titles and maybe a few other older hand drawn titles shot on film might get a boost from 4K, for the most part I feel Blu-ray is an ideal format for anime in general. NGE + EOE should likely never try to go past Blu UNLESS if they wanted to keep the Episodes at 1080p and fit more on a disc without sacrificing quality. They could put the entirety of NGE, Death & EOE with the same AV quality in a boxset and use fewer discs than they would have to on BD.

robersora wrote:Would Jo, Ha and Q even profit from those?

Uncertain. They'd likely have to upscale the older films, they could be making Thrice with 4K in mind, but if Khara really works at it anything is possible. And if they ever were willing to go the extra distance and do some touch up work on the older CG elements in the earlier films for a future home video re-release - those CG extras in 2.0 could be improved - I don't know if anyone would complain.

Anywho, it's cool Khara put the three films up on Youtube for free. I can't think of many studios willing to do that.

So, here’s the funny thing about 4K movies that had an entirely digital production workflow: They’re all resolution upscales. Even the ones shot in 4K. Or, at least the big expensive CGI-heavy films are all upscales. It takes 8 - 48 hours to render a single frame in 1080p computer animation. Even when computers got faster at rendering, artists just kept giving them more details to render, keeping render times consistently and obnoxiously long. No one is going to lengthen that render time by doing a 4K render of Thanos’ face, so they do a 1080p render and upscale it to 4K. And, honestly, from about 9 feet away from the screen (which is about how far away the average person sits away from their TV) very few people can tell the difference anyway.

HOWEVER, 4K Blu-rays have a wider color space than regular Blu-rays, and many films were produced in wider color spaces to begin with, so there’s still a benefit to be had there. Computer coloring in anime would especially benefit from the wider selection of colors in 4K media, as gradients often tend to look “blocky” or “stepped” in even Blu-ray color spaces. Many films are produced with 12-bit colors, and then downscaled to an 8-bit color resolution for Blu-ray. I believe 4K Blu-ray will give you about a 10-bit color resolution, which means the gradient colors in anime would appear smoother in 4K than in the 8-bit colors of a regular Blu-ray.

So, if the Rebuilds were produced in 12-bit colors, then there will be an improvement in the picture for a 4K release over the 8-bit colors of Blu-Ray. If not, then Khara needed to do some trickier manual upscaling to get the illusion of a wider color space.

Did they alter the goofy faces in 2.0 for the Versions on Youtube or has it been like that since the Blu-ray’s?

I popped in the a Funimation 2.22 Blu-ray, and it appears as though this change is reflected in the initial home video release as well. I remember seeing in the “Groundworks” book for the film (which pictures all of the movie’s animation key frames in sequential order) that there were some changes made to their expressions after the theatrical release.

So, that change isn’t exclusive to the YouTube/4K? version of the film. The home video version was always like that.

Interesting. I never caught that one. Aside from the scenes added to the Bluray the only other 2.0 changes I noticed was they altered some of Shinji's expressions when Unit 01 is pummeling the 10th Angel and they toned down Misato's "oh Kaji so dreamy" face at the end of the scene between them in the NERV cafeteria.

I don't frequent the Wiki but is there a place where all the changes in the Rebuilds from theatrical to home video are collected?

I know I'm rather late but it would be nice if we got a release of the theatrical X.0 cuts at some point just for preservation sake. I wouldn't think Khara would have too much of a problem with it since the NGE BD box has three different versions of Death.

Ta-da! All of the cuts that were changed are listed there, though it’s difficult to tell exactly what about them have changed since nobody has a consumer print of the theatrical release to which to compare to their home video version.

One of the more drastic changes that stuck out to me was the audio mixing for the film’s “Give Me Wings” segment. The original theatrical release had all of the sound effects of Impact starting, while the home video release removed almost all of those sound effects, keeping only the music and the dialogue. Funimation includes the original theatrical version of that segment only as a special feature on the disc, while the movie itself contains the home video version with only music and dialogue in the scene.

I can't recall where this is from. It seems to fit between Q and Until You Come to Me, but I can't remember anywhere it actually appears:

Image

I ask because it appears (animated, not just a still) in the trailer at the start of 1.11 and 2.22 on the web.

That's a completely new shot created for Shin Eva. But it could be reminding you of lots of similar material we've had the past years: the Shin Eva poster, the storyboards that appeared in that Shiro Sagisu music video from 2013 (the one that played different versions of the "Next Episode Theme"), Until You Come To Me, etc.

That trailer is the same that released in july btw, they just took away the release date at the end. It's officially trailer 2.

SPOILER: Show
I printed that shot out and have it hanging on my wall since july...

It's specifically shot 10 of scene 2.

Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"

Thanks - in that trailer it doesn't appear to be animated, but it's a shorter cut there than in this new appearance.

It's 100% animated in Trailer 2 (complete with Shinji doing an Eva-01 walk), but you might need to force YouTube to play it at 1080 if you actually want to see anything.
