Thank you, Kuribo-04.

No problem, have been frustrated with these things myself for some time now.

That Avatar themed car really is weird, but kinda cool too. I saw the concept art but didn't hear about the car.

About the Civic countdown. On twitter, the Eva accounts teased a commercial for the car, so I guess this is what the countdown is for. I see three possibilities (and we are finding out soon):
1-Only the commercial comes out.
2-The commercial is accompanied by a trailer of the film, either the same day or the same week, to use the extra attention this might generate.
3-It's a commercial for the car that includes new footage for Shin Eva. That would be kinda weird and maybe a little anticlimatic, but not the first time footage for films is glimpsed in promo commercials like this.

Writing this post, I had a real sense of normalcy and anticipation, almost forgot about the situation we are in..

Only the Asuka and Rei Civic teasers came out, and interestingly they seem to be holding on to the Shinji one till april.
No Shin anything so far.

Shiro Sagisu doesn’t say anything Eva specific but it was the most recent thing he was working on and I don’t think he announced whether he finished or not. His newest Tweet seems to say “We can’t make music” because of Coronavirus OR that recent works will have to be home recorded piece by piece and then spliced together in the edit which would sound very different. I don’t know, on phone and Google Translate was no help.

So yep.

Useless Google Translate: [i]It has been impossible for large groups of orchestras to perform and sing since the end of World War II. The world changed instantly.
Home recording and overdubbing will probably be the mainstream for the time being, but will the artists who move the masses express this time and worldview! ?

This tweet (terrible Google Translation aside) sure makes it sound like Shiro Sagisu & his team was not finished with the score for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 when lockdown rules on public gatherings was put in place. If the film sticks with its June 27th release date (it won’t) Sagisu might have to reuse old tracks of music which is not ideal.

Weak Google Translation: Actors and filming are conspicuous, but in fact, post production is a movie that takes a long time with human tactics. There is a limit in teleworking ... Therefore, many Hollywood works are now in a state of being broken down.
If live orchestral performances are not possible during the post-production music recordings, then the only option is to drive in, make a minimal arrangement, and play past sound sources.

Sounds bad if Eva is actually affected. But nothing that can't be fixed in the bluray release.

The movie will be delayed indefinitely before the end of the month I suspect.

Yep. The exponential growth of the virus has been terrifying these past two weeks and the necessary measures are being taken now.

TOHO just announced the 2020 Detective Conan and Crayon Shin-Chan films which were both set to open late April are being delayed to unspecified dates due to Covid-19. It's important to note unlike the delay of the 2020 Doraemonmovie, Toho did not schedule new release dates for the films. They are TBD. Just a little over a month ago when Toho moved the Doraemon movie off its March 6 they shifted it to the optimistic date of August 7th. That optimism is off the table for now.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-04-03/2020-detective-conan-crayon-shin-chan-films-delayed/.158262

And some live action comedy Grand Blue Dreaming just abandoned its May 29th release for an unspecified date due to Covid-19.

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2020-04-03/live-action-grand-blue-dreaming-film-delayed/.158267

The film will have to be delayed. Most likely indefinitely. But, on the bright side the film will still be released at some point and we will likely appreciate it all the more after getting through this crisis. The question just becomes will things be optimistic enough for the film to be moved to late November or December release in 2020 - one reason the novel virus is so destructive is that we have no set treatment but we should start hearing the first results from ongoing medicinal trails this month and if any really successful ones are found that could really lessen the virus CFR and severe symptoms percentage and my hope is countries can start putting those in place this summer and beyond - OR do they just say fuck it and move the film to Summer 2021 like the Olympics did?

Reminder that Doraemon had no set date either for some time after being delayed.

I still don't see a delay as unavoidable, just as a possibility. And I think they'll keep going forward as planned until june, and then they'll adapt if necessary.

After 21 days of quarantine we seem to have hit the peak of the curve in Spain, and now authorities are warning that we won't instantly return to a normal life after the quarantine, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel I guess. China flattened its curve after about 55 days IIRC.

If the movie does get delayed I don't think it'll be too long after june, especially not 2021. I think that would be silly. It would be competing with Miyazaki's film, don't think that would be good for either film. And the film just has to come out at some point. I have Evangelion on the biggest pedestal you could possibly imagine, but even I think it would be healthy for khara to finally realease the film and do new projects. I have a feeling the studio is full of talent ready to direct stuff.

Secretly hoping this finally changes the antiquated film industry and getting direct VOD releases becomes the norm. How silly is it that quarantine has the same effect on film that the plague had on theater in Shakespeare's time: something you actually had to perform on a stage with people present.

I think a decision will be made in May, don't think they will be eager to delay this so they won't if they don't have to. Whatever direction this is heading in mid May will determine what happens to the June 27 date.

There's not much suggesting this will get better soon, but time will tell.

I just hope that an indefinitely delay in Japan just means, they'll be able to pull of a simultaneous world wide release. Having the movie pushed back to December 2020 at the earliest would basically mean we get to see it in 2021... with 2022 being more likely. 10 years after the release of Q.

Movies in general are in a difficult position. 200-400 people in a closed room sit shoulder by shoulder for 2 hours is not really idea with a worldwide pandemic infection lurking. And I'm sure fear of COVID-19 will impact the commercial success of all the movies coming out before the virus is completely defeated, presumably at some point next year.

There is also a backlog of blockbuster movies forming. I doubt they would send the movie in theaters against Detective Conan, or possibly One Piece and My Hero Academia. Releases will have to be spread over months.

It's a tricky situation, but world safety is more important than Eva so I don't care that much honestly. We have waited years, we'll wait some more.

I don't think the delay will change anything in this regard. I still expect the movie to debut first in Japan.

I sadly don't think either a worldwide release would happen. Q's bluray came out 5 months after the release in cinemas. Maybe add some months to that because Toho. When the bd is out I'm watching the movie.

That it has taken so long is all the more reason that it shouldn't take even longer. Khara wants to progress I'm sure, Anno wants the movie out I'm sure, and we most definitely want to see the movie. Never have I seen a better example of why the cinema model sucks ass, and I actually no joke just had a one hour rant irl about why it sucks.

Imagine if videogames like Animal Crossing were being delayed because you had to go to some public space to play them. Or imagine the same for books. Or TV shows. Or music albums. In a world that made sense, movies would be making more money now since everyone is at home and needs entertainment. Cinemas should be an alternative, not something holding films hostage.

Imagine seeing Shin Eva at a place where you might have to deal with loud people, couldn't rewind if you didn't catch something and couldn't pause if you had to go to the toilet or wanted to go for something to drink.

I am willing to pay well over 100€ to own this movie digitally. Tbh I'd pay any sum. Right from khara itself. No intermediate companies getting a cut of the money. An ideal world. One can dream.

Yep. I just did a comparison of Japanese attendance on BoxOfficeMojo and for the past two + months attendance has been dropping at a rate of over 15% a week. For the past six weeks Japanese theaters are doing roughly 25% of what they did at the same time last year. Sure, some of that can be accredited to what releases are playing in theaters but not 75%. Whenever Toho/Toei/Khara/Whoever chose the June 27,2020 release date - it was decided on loooong before the late December announcement. They could have had the date in mind all the way back in 2018 before the first teaser appeared in theaters on Mirai - that date was decoded as the best date for the film to make a hit with audiences. That's not the case anymore.

It will be similar to what is happening in the Hollywood film market and in theatrical markets around the globe. Schedules will be rearranged, movies that were supposed to come out this summer will take later dates in the Fall and Winter and the movies originally scheduled for later in the year will move to 2021, etc. Some of the smaller titles will go to streaming and others will just be shifted a full calendar year but the movies will all be available at some point.

As for an international release? Despite COVID-19 shuttering everything, once theaters return so will the robust theatrical market for Japanese anime that came with it. Thanks to companies like GKids, Funimation, Fathom, etc most obscure anime films get a theatrical showing of some kind. One of the last movies I saw in theaters was Masaaki Yuasaa's Ride Your Wave and the last ticket i purchased was for Children of the Sea (obviously that showing is not happening now). In 2012 neither of those would have bene given a real run. Now they are. When Eva does hit Japanese theaters I imagine a global run would soon follow. I don't think it would be as fast as the turnaround of the last Dragonball or My Hero Academia films (in the US it was 1 month between Japan and US release for Dragonball, two months for MHA) but it wouldn't be that far off.

kuribo-04 wrote:Cinemas should be an alternative, not something holding films hostage.

As a professional filmmaker I take offense to this.
We all hope our films have the opportunity to play on the biggest screen possible to an attentive audience.
That's sadly not the case.
99% of movies made already don't get theatrical releases and do end up going straight to VOD. The 1% that do get a proper theatrical run are made specifically for that venue. They have extensive marketing campaigns to tell you to go the theaters, etc. The filmmakers ideally would have everyone see it in a theater. If Anno wanted these to be made for TV he would have done so. And there most certainly are young filmmakers who 3.0+1.0 is their first professional gig and they want nothing more than to see their work and name in the credits on the big screen. I know I felt that when it happened.
The filmmakers want their film to play in a theater. Perhaps now more so than ever. And it will one day. Just probably not when originally promised. Not because the filmmakers ran into problems but because of a global crisis.
But, when this passes - and it will - for a glorious few weeks any filmmaker who helped make the movie happen will be able to go buy a ticket and sit in a theater with strangers - maybe not a lot at first but theaters will fill up eventually - to watch their work.
Then, after a few short months of playing in theaters the finished movie will be readily available on disc or through streaming for THE REST OF ALL TIME.

If Khara ultimately decides to release the movie directly to streaming that is their prerogative as the authors of the film and I will 100% support it.

BUT Cinemas are not holding films hostage.

There are literally a million works of art readily available right now. If movies were food this would be like willingly starving to death because the one thing you want isn't on the menu.

People are dying.

Four of my friends are in the NYC hospital system right now and a rather young coworker of mine died three days ago. We think one of them likely got infected working on a film set for a movie that might have a theatrical run and if the movie is ever finished thats where they hope to see it. On the big screen. And I hope they can pull through and I don't get sick and I can one day see it with them.

First
Four of my friends are in the NYC hospital system right now and a rather young coworker of mine died three days ago.

I truly feel sorry for this and hope your friends get better.

But I'm living in Madrid and as you can probably imagine the situation isn't pretty here. So I'm well aware of what is going on and the damage it is doing to my country and the whole world.

At no point have I questioned the importance of this and I don't think I implied it anywhere. All I'm saying is due to the current situation this movie we are all eagerly anticipating might not come out, and it's the fault of the cinema model. And then I extended that complaint to the cinemasin general, not just in this situation. I respect that someone might want to see their work on the big screen, or in 48fps, or in 3D. But I can still criticize all of those things.

I'm a film student, so I'm really not someone looking in from the outside. Videogames started in the arcades. Then they moved to home consoles, which looked worse, but were more convenient. It's the logical evolution of entertainment.

I get the excitement of a premiere. I worked for three months on a short film last year, did about 40 pages of storyboards for it, co-directed, etc. and then couldn't attend its showing at a cinema. I kinda felt like crying. So I understand that appeal. Premieres can stay. Cinemas should exist as an option. But not as the only one. I hate cinemas and have had bad experiences at them (actual anxiety attacks, but that's beside the point, those common flaws I mentioned earlier are more than enough), and I hate that it's the only option to enjoy one of the hobbies that brings me the most joy.

They already are an alternative; you pay more (per view) to see it at a cinema, or you wait a few months (paying with time) and see it later. Cinemas aren't the only way to watch movies.

View Original Postkuribo-04 wrote:Imagine seeing Shin Eva at a place where you might have to deal with loud people, couldn't rewind if you didn't catch something and couldn't pause if you had to go to the toilet or wanted to go for something to drink.

In Japanese theaters, loud people are a non-issue. The theaters are dead silent and most stay until the very end of the credits out of respect. The toilet thing should be preparedness on your part; I inherited a weak bladder and am a distance runner (I drink a lot of fluids) and I managed to sit through Endgame (3hrs) without needing a pee break.

I don't disagree with this, but convenience shouldn't be the golden metric for how entertainment is crafted. Distribution channels have always influenced art (music streaming is changing how songs are structured, like radio and the phonograph before it); I wouldn't want movies to always be made with streaming Netflix on a 5" phone as the end goal.

My friends in Japan are pretty unanimously upset at how half-baked the government is handling the situation, and I suspect it will only get worse in the coming weeks. The delaying of a movie premiere is probably low on their list of priorities.

The delaying of a movie premiere is probably low on their list of priorities.

Same here. Since, again, I'm in one of the regions most affected by this, a country that was still trying to recuperate from the 2008 financial crisis and that is going to absolute shit now.

I don't think that means I can't talk about hoping the film this very forum is dedicated to comes out ASAP if possible, and I don't think anything will change my mind about cinemas and the current distribution model being shit. It's an informed opinion. We live in 2020 and yet a film like Eva will take months after its premiere to be seen in other countries. Likely in BDs of lower quality (in Spain). Or you buy the Japanese bluray and rip the film...but that's not legal. If you're lucky, you'll be able to see the film after months without having run into spoilers that everyone will be talking about on the internet (and don't tell me it's easy to avoid, I know major twists of the Promare movie, which I have actively tried to not see or know anything about, and that's just one example).

I can add an infinte list of things to this, like all the times cinema employees have been fucking assholes, something I don't have to deal with at home. The only thing I would save from all this is going out with friends to see a film CAN be nice.
It's not anyone's fault, It's just a model everyone's afraid to break out from.
That's my final word on that.

While people in Japanese cinemas are silent to an almost eerie extend, from my experience Austrian cinemas aren't that rowdy as well. Is it true what I hear from American screening? People yelling, clapping and screaming? I guess it's a difference in culture; Japanese see the movie theatre as a place in which one should act in respectful silence, kinda like in a religious place, while Americans view it more like a sports arena?

I agree with Kuribo, that it's annoying that Japanese movies in particular tend to treat global releases like an afterthought. It would be cool, if the powers that be would consider the foreign market before it is released in Japan, so that we don't have to wait for more than half a year, to be able to see it in cinemas, if at all. Especially for a movie that's made for the big screen and has been in production for so long that should be possible, imo.

So we are clear that I'm not an ass here, despite how embittered I'm about 3.0 and that I care little how FINAL ends better than EoE, I do take it serious whats happening around the world now and how my sisters and mother feel about it, who live seperate from me and my friends who come a long way to visit me each week if they can.

My older sister who lives with her friend and is married with him for 2 years, is a nurse too and is in a higher position in her job. I hope for her to be safe.

My younger sister who becomes 15 next month lives in a Youth Welfare Institution for five years now, because of what happened with my mother. Me and my older sister do stay in contact with them and visit each other if we can.

My mother ended up in Jail because of how a man, who was with her in a relationship for a while, used her and was violent to her. One day they were drunk hard and were fighting each other and my mother, out of fear he would hurt her, accidentally killed him.

Me though in the first years since then I had to fight against my guilt and self loathing for how little I could do to what happened to my mother and younger sister and had it hard to allow myself to be happy and being loved again, because I felt that I should earn this back and prove again that I'm worth it.

I should know already that I don't have to feel this way anymore, that I can deal with hardships and I feel only little bad about it, so I can be focused and do whats necessary to over come it. I'm a hardened men now who cares for other people and is capable to live with hard choices.

Yeah that's a hard and personal info dump for you all, but this means I can deal with this pandemic and should be able to help myself.

I can live with FINAL being delayed, when it stays certain that it will be released after the pandemic.
I carry out things right to the end. No. Matter. What.
