Also, on the Eva Extra app khara has been releasing the Rebuild films and most of the Eva works from the Animator Expo for for free. This week (the third) was Q (although people paying for the app had all films available the whole time). Seems like it's leading up to something. Not necessarily, but seems like it. Maybe we'll know soon what the plans are.

Any thoughts on what the best strategy would be? I think there is no issue with continuing as planned and delaying if there is no other way, right? With three months to go, I think delaying it now seems premature. This isn't the Olympics. It's a film made in a studio. And when they want/can it's just sending it to cinemas. The Olympics had lots of outdoors activities even before the event itself.

I'm hearing the numbers were inaccurate and they weren't doing much testing, which is changing only now that the Olympics have been postponed.
I'm no expert on the matter though.

Well, the Times graph shows the numbers of deaths due to Covid-19, not how many people are currently sick with Covid-19. (As far as I know, Japan's reported number fudging was based on how many living people they've tested for Covid-19, not based on how many people they've reported died from it.) The fact that Japan has so few deaths is actually pretty good, but I'm not sure what's attributing to that. Delaying the Olympics was necessary because it would have mingled people from around the globe, and that can only do terrible things to those numbers in Japan.

That all having been said, if it is true that Japan was even fudging the numbers for Covid-19 deaths, it was probably doing that to increase their chances to still hold the Olympics in 2020. (Which is an odd goal, seeing as how you don't want people from all over the world traveling. Americans can't get tested for it unless you sick and over 80 years/thousand in the bank.)

Like I said before, Shin Eva won't get delayed unless the government shuts it down. Toho owns many of the theaters it'll be playing in, and it has an invested interest in making sure as many people as possible see all of their movies (films animated by Khara included). Anno cannot control when the movie gets released at this point, only Toho/Toei can.

∆ Yeah but how many people will go once the fear starts? If goverment said right now in Spain "well, back to normal" I'm sure there'd still be a long adjustment period in which people feared going places like a cinema. If Japan keeps not doing shit, that's what the situation will be. And it can't be stressed enough: more people will die.

I expect Japan to go into quaratine in the next few days. Those numbers, that was Spain like two weeks ago, and look at us now.

A Shin Eva release will depend on when the quarantine ends, which depends on when it starts. Another thing that depends on that is how many lives are saved...

I guess it will be delayed.
Here in Italy the situation is tragic to say the least, and it started out of the blue.
Just my two cents.

That article is a couple days old and represents why I was optimistic originally. Now Abe is warning of a prolonged battle that could see cases multiply by 30 in two weeks.

My optimism is vanishing at this point, but still three months to go.

The nastiest thing about this virus is that it has such long incubation times and the disease process varies hugely from no symptoms at all to death by Pneumonia.
With a situation this volatile I wouldn't be sure that the movie will actually come out until the day it hits cinemas and even then, showings might be aborted prematurely.

FYI Japan is experiencing exponential growth in the last 4 days. Pretty interesting how the virus decided to wait for the Olympics to be postponed to spread.

Realistically I can't see how production won't be disrupted by this, the movie industry is in a worldwide crisis already with a huge list of movies delayed and productions stopped. And even if the production isn't disrupted, will June be distant enough from the outbreak for people to go into packed theaters all around Japan with no risks? I don't think so, and I don't think theaters should re-open at all this year.

Not totally related, but there are some interesting developments in the US

^ I wouldn’t trust anything Grace Randolph says. She has no connections in the film industry and often makes up shit for attention - mostly #ReleaseTheSnyderCut bullshit because certain people eat that up - and is genuinely hated amongst the film community for spreading lies and disinformation. Her whole schtick - besides being very alt-righty at times - is to make up wild accusations based on what everyone is saying and then overblown her “insight” if an iota of that comes true no matter how tangential to her claims. And because modern film journalism is so scattered and made up of people running sites that need attention and can’t verify things you’ll have a hundred ComicBookMovieNews site or whatever write articles With catchy headlines for easy clicks and use her unsourced tweet as the verification. It’s gross but it’s a strong business plan.

She’s a clickbait troll.

She’s also straight up racist. I never watched the film but her main criticism of Disney+’s Lady and the Tramp remake was that they hired Tessa Thompson to voice Lady and now the story was ruined for being “too ethnic”. Like I’m sure the movie wasn’t good but casting a black woman to voice an animal was not the reason.

Could Disney release these $200 million+ costing films to streaming? I mean anything is possible. Would they lose hundreds of millions of dollars? Yeah. But the likeliest thing is they’ll just wait. theaters will open again at some point and those theaters will need movies to play. Disney - and all studios - can’t produce or shoot anything new right now so if they start releasing their big finished films on streaming now that’s just throwing away Spent revenue AND leaving them in the position of having nothing ready to release to theaters for months if not a year after things open up again.
It also doesn’t help that Disney+ isn’t even aviabilale in 10 countries yet.

I think the likeliest thing we’ll see most things with a few exceptions get shifted a year Like how Fast and Furious 9 did. The big Summer films of 2020 go to Summer 2021 and the movies that were supposed to come out next year go to 2022.

And yeah, with the exceptional growth Japan has been having the need to lock down soon.

I never watched the film, so I don't know jack shit about it, but I am so fscking progressive, that my blind assertions are true for granted, because I can condemn anyone who opposes me as racist and this settles the argument?

Not telling that racism is cool - it's a plain idiocy in my opinion - but you've developed a funny culture of debate out there, beyond the puddle. Keep it going and your grandchildren will have to learn Chinese bugrunes to get any decent job.

Back on topic - I can wait. I'm only afraid that the Japanese, as usual, will have trouble with losing the face, and so any necessary decisions at the country level will be taken too late. But I don't trace the news from The Archipelago on a regular basis, so I can hope I'm wrong and making fool of myself now. There is always hope, right?

lmao, I wouldn't phrase it that harshly, but rings so true. Internet "debate" of Americans is often times straight up bewildering. Often it seems like they aren't even discussion a topic, but rather say things to satisfy their respective bubble, demonizing everyone who dares to stray from their chosen mantra, in a never-ending quest of garnering clout (I guess).
Like calling someone racist, for being critical of blatantly pandering media machineries who wouldn't give a shit about inclusion if it wasn't in vogue, while obliviously segregating the populace by "race" in election results and determining terminology people are allowed to use certain words.

While the idea of shifting all of the 2020 releases to streaming seems cool, I doubt it'll happen -
However, let's entertain that idea for a moment; sure Disney would now have the infrastructure to pull off such a feat with Disney+, but it would fuck with theaters hard, probably dealing a fatal blow to the whole cinema industry. Just think of the media backlash and social media shit storm that would rain over them! So while I doubt Disney would commit to something as radical as that, I can imagine, though, a test run of some sorts - releasing one movie as a streaming event on Disney+ - it would also be a huge marketing push for their new platform.

But Shin Evangelion? I could see Khara teaming up with dwango once again, if they were in control of the release. But they don't. They gave that away to huge unwieldy companies Toho and Tohei. Neither of them own a platform, so they would need to "rent" it out to another service like Netflix, see no chance that they give up control over one of their biggest releases, especially considering how perpetually conservative Japanese companies tend to be.

Ehhh I agree with Gendo's Papa. Regardless of why companies like Disney do what they do, a lot of their critics wear their questionable ideals on their sleeves. "Why is there a black stormotrooper?" was pretty fucking stupid and ugly and it got worse from there. Also this
Keep it going and your grandchildren will have to learn Chinese bugrunes to get any decent job.

seems oddly alarming over nothing.

Anyway, back on topic, coming from someone in a "risk zone", Spain is totally planning to get back to normalcy once the virus is under control. Some of the methods I see suggested here, like no cinemas the rest of the year, will have to be taken if necessary, but let's see if they are actually necessary. The worst thing right now is how uncertain the future is.

I've said it before I think, but I hate how movies are still tied to cinemas. It isn't an option but the only way to watch a film for months. Imagine if you had to go to a public (sort of uncomfortable in many cases) place to play the latest videogamea, read books or watch TV shows. I would gladly destroy my wallet to get Eva digitally.

I don't know guys, let's see what happens. Right now I want at the very least a trailer. After some investigation, the first major trailer for 2.0, also a june 27 film, came out at the end of march/beginning of april.
So maybe we are really close.

I got triggered. My bad.

I got, because there are people in my country, somewhat influential, who attempt to copy the American progressiveness as-is, without trace of hesitation or reflection on how it could possibly work in the Polish native cultural context. Like, they were desperately trying to find some equivalent of the word nigger in Polish language - even though we never had the need to include such invective into our vocabulary, as we were never Black slaves owners. At the same time, the same people find nothing wrong in using the invectives derived from the nobility's scorn towards their serfs. Even though most of them are of serf ancestry. (sigh)

On the Japanese corporate state of mind... I was pondering lately on that scene you all call "the boobs jiggle" - except that by me those are not "boobs", but "baloons" (see: "Married with children", this show became quite popular here). And you wouldn't believe the conclusion. The Japanese culture of power and authority is strange: it makes those people incredibly resistant and vulnerable at the same time. They can defy the enemy in spite of total destruction and still do nothing when the fate itself gives them a chance to win the war. Or at least achieve a stalemate. Yuve, yuve yu.

Maybe I didn't properly explain and for that I apologize. Not here to pick fights.
Her criticism was not based off seeing the film and feeling the filmmakers did something odd or forced with the original story. Her criticism was simply casting Tessa Thompson (and Benedict Wong in a smaller voice role) to voice an animal character was wrong because it was (her words) "racebending". When the cast was announced she did a whole lengthy video about how having non-white actors voice photorealistic dogs was wrong because the original 1950s voice actors were white- she was okay with the casting of Justin Theroux to voice the Tramp - and that they were "ruining a classic". She deleted the video when called out on this and tried to say her words were taken out of context but there was nothing TO take out of context. She also said the actress Kelly Marie Tran deserved all the death threats & hate she received for playing the character Rose in the Star Wars movies cause no one wants "someone like her" in a Star Wars movie.

Anywho,

I might have missed it, but I don't think anyone on here mentioned the tie-in Evangelion is doing with Honda Civic (cause of course they are). There's a website up with a lovely Eva countdown clock that is under 24 hours now -
https://www.honda.co.jp/CIVICEVA/
They'll be announcing some new kind of Honda Civic Hatchback which I'm sure it will come in Evangelion colors like a Unit 02 Red & what not BUT there could be something 3.0+1.0 related released as well. Could be.
Crazier things have happened. In January, James Cameron shared the first official production artwork for AVATAR II when they showcased the very VERY Odd Mercedes-Benz AVTR concept car.
It's... a weird car.

Actually there were 48 hours left on the Hounda site. But I don't think they'll show something Shin releated, it would be just... Weird, even for Khara's standards.
