It's that time again, when retrospectives happen, and get posted to the amusement of the masses. I haven't seen anything yet equivalent to the Japanator listing from the '00s, but Funimation have been posting their poll, which in most places looks back all of six months. I'm sure we can do better than that.

The problem I'm seeing with this is that, along with being a very subjective matter, not everyone has seen all the anime that has came out in the past decade. For example, Attack on Titan is, or at least was, extremely popular, but I have never seen it. At the same time, there are some anime that I have seen and loved, but it fell off other people's radar. So, would there be any ground rules concerning this?

I instantly thought Kill la Kill as an example, and then realized it's closer to the start of the decade than the end, and I now feel old.

Edit:
An actual top 10 (a lot of stuff I haven't seen though)
Eva 3.0
Kill la Kill
Wind Rises
Kizumonogatari 1
Kizumonogatari 3
Princess Kaguya
Owarimonogatari Part 1
Monogatari Second Season
Hanamonogatari
Luluco
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Your list has great stuff in it. I still have to watch some stuff to confirm, but this would be my list off the top of my head (no particular order)

Space Dandy
Kill la Kill (might possibly be replaced by Promare)
Madoka Magica
Mawaru Penguindrum (might be replaced by Sarazanmai)
Shirobako/Girlish Number (I consider them to be two sides of the same coin)
Made in Abyss
HunterXHunter
Eccentric Family
Mob Psycho 100 (still need to watch Season Two)
Little Witch Academia

Hot contestor when watched
March comes in like a Lion

Movies
Disappearance of Haruhi
Kizumonogatari
Evangelion 3.0
The Wind Rises
Cencoroll

Honorable Mentions:
Psycho Pass (S1), Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Occultic; Nine, Gatchaman Crowds (both Seasons), Ping Pong, The Night is Short, walk on Girl, Once Punch Man (S2 killed it for me)

I really like Madoka and Little Witch Academia. Most of the rest I haven't seen yet. :/

The problem is I'm sure a company that releases anime doesn't want you saying another company's release is the anime of the decade or even worse ... one you would have to download fansubs for! Off the top of my head I'd put two of the Crayon Shin-Chan films that came out over the last decade into my top 10 which both have no western release. I'd also put Devilman Crybaby and Planet With on a top 10 and Funimation doesn't have the rights to those either. The two Shin Chan films are Robot Dad and Dream World if anyone is curious.

I second this. Am I just supposed to give a list of 2010 favourites?

Anyway, not a single one of you mentioned Shin Sekai Yori or Space Battleship Yamato 2199 or Rakugo, and yet, you all mentioned Kill la Kill. Disgusting.

I'm displeased with all 2 people that wrote a list before me. You should feel ashamed of yourselves.

Seriously though, I need to think a bit about this. Shouldn't we also do a best comedy or best mecha of the 2010's as well? Just so we don't make a simple favourite list.

A whole decade must cover a good third of all the anime I've seen, so it doesn't feel focussed at all. Anyway, I have favourites for different moods, so writing them down would be rather a waste of time (unless I'm in the mood, which I'm not today).

I'm not running a poll, but there are several out there if that's what you want (even if Funi have finished theirs). As ten years ago, we can mock the plebeian tastes shown in other less enlightened fora and display our own superior selection.

Speaking of which, one of the /a/ polls last I snapshotted it

10 Shingeki no Kyojin
9 Kill La Kill
8 Mawaru Penguindrum
7 K-On!!
6 Ping Pong The Animation
5 Steins;Gate
4 Sword Art Online
3 Hunter x Hunter (2011)
2 Violet Evergarden
1 Puella Magi Madoka★Magica

which is mostly series I either never felt inclined to seek out or tried and dropped (Penguindrum being the only one I watched all through).

The 2010s weren't as impressive for me as the 2000s -- last time my 9s and 10s made up a top 20, this time my 8s and 9s (no 10s) make a top 10 (in alphabetical order)

Chihayafuru
Danberu nan kilo moteru*
Flying Witch
Gifu Dodo
Kemono Friends
Magnificent KOTOBUKI
Mushishi S2*
Sengoku Collection
Sora no Woto
YuYuYu

* = not anime of that respective year, with bubbling under, AOTY choices that didn't quite make the cut Fafner Exodus and SSSS Gridman.

That leaves a possible upset in the form of the still incomplete Fafner Beyond. There may be other backlog items that will make a retrospective change to the lists, but that hasn't happened yet for the 2000s, despite backlog raiding.

OK, so after going out for dinner I feel a bit more mellow. Here's a list - but if I were to make it tomorrow I don't know how many entries would stay the same. Order is roughly chronological:

Mawaru Penguindrum
Madoka Magica
Monogatari series - if that's too broad, then the Kizumonogatari films can stand for the whole.
Kyōsōgiga
Your Lie in April
Noragami
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Banana Fish
Dororo (2019)
Fruits Basket (2019)

The last two are remakes, but greatly superior to their precursors.

Honourable mentions include: Anohana, No.6, Katanagatari, Pupa, Kiznaiver, SSSS Gridman, Kono oto Tomare!, Uchōten Kazoku, Given.

Things I enjoy, but didn't make my shortlist include: The Piano Forest, My Hero Academia, Little Witch Academia, Kill la Kill, Sarazanmai, MSG IBO.

I genuinely have no idea which shows I enjoyed came out this decade (:|

Two of my all time favorites did come out this decade, but beyond that no clue - Gundam Iron-blooded Orphans and Highschool DxD.

also Darling in the FranXX will always hold a place in my heart even after it became the trainwreck it turned into

More good stuff (and good rubbish) I enjoyed that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet includes-
Food Wars / Shokugeki no Soma - Multiple seasons of sexy food tasting.
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers - Bait and switch masterclass
Erased - Yes, even with the clunky ending.
Teekyu - Endless screwball insanity.
Bunny Drop / Usagi Drop - I'm fairly certain the story ends with the toon, right?
Monster Musume - Harem comedy done wrong, the right way.

Lots of extra, special love goes to my favourite CGDCT and two comedies of the decade: Encouragement of Climb, Seitokai Yakuindomo and Working!!:

All three had multiple seasons and plenty of content to keep me smiling for 10 years.

Just realised three of my 3x3 shows were from this decade. Nice.

I enjoyed both Erased and Bunny Drop (and I bought Bunny Drop on DVD) - but although I'd recommend them as worth watching, I didn't feel either was really in the "best of" league. Others I'd place at the same level as those two are Kids on the Slope (which I also bought) and Orange (bought the manga).

Okay, starting with movies:

-The Wind Rises
-The Monogatari movies
-In this corner of the world
-Wolf Children

And my favourite movie of the decade is Kaguya Hime.

And for series

-Asobi Asobase
-Chio-chan no Tsuugakuro (these two are my favourite comedies of the decade)

-Shin Sekai Yori
-Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (my favourite sci-fi)

-Gundam Unicorn
-SSSS Gridman( favourite mecha, Gridman counts, right?)

-Death Parade
-Rakugo Shinjuu
-Devilman Crybaby
-Lupin Part V
-Mahoujin Guruguru

I'll stick with what I said a few years ago and say Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is probably the best anime of the decade.

I feel like I'm too biased for more recent anime. A lot of stuff I really like needs a re watch.

A couple of people have mentioned Princess Kaguya, but I have to say it left me cold. The film that I preferred from around the same time was A Silent Voice - though I suppose that living with a deaf partner predisposed me towards it.

It's pleasing to see that there's a great divergence in tastes here. It also means that it would have been futile to try making this any sort of poll, as there's very little consensus (even on post format :D ). Having hardly watched any movies in recent years myself (only The Wind Rises, and Kaguya-hime) I'd not rated them separately, and they didn't make the cut for top ten places.

Strictly, it's tokusatsu, but that's close enough to be included under the broad umbrella by tradition.

While I intellectually support this content, some of the choices triggered me, lmao.

For instance, I think Shin Sekai Yori has interesting ideas, but the execution overall makes it a train wreck... Kinda like Ergo Proxy, but worse.

Thinking back though, I really enjoyed Koe no Katachi, despite it's melodramatic tone, the high production values and the strong script made it digestible. But there's just a tad too much wallowing in tragedy and misery overall nevertheless - not to speak about the very weird depiction of the bullying of a deaf girl like it was some children's shenanigans.
A Silent Voice would have really benefited from some tone adjustment - a little more down to earth overall and maybe not framing bullying as a comedic part of childhood.

Also, Orange might be the most aggravating series I've ever finished, I gave it a 1/10. It's like Koe no Katachi but without any merit whatsoever. Tragedy porn par excellence. I kinda hate watched it like I did with Darling in the Franxx (which I would rate a solid 4 tho in hindsight)

I've been thinking of my top 10 for the decade. I'm sure this will change when I go home and think of stuff closer to the start of the decade but this is just my opinion for now.

1. SSSS.Gridman
2. Crayon Shin-Chan - Assault on the Dream World
3. Devilman Crybaby
4. Crayon Shin-Chan - Robo Dad Strikes Back
5. Princess Jellyfish
6. Samurai Flamenco
7. Planet With
8. Gundam Build Fighters (The Original)
9. Ping Pong The Animation
10. Lupin III - Jigen's Gravestone

There's lots of great anime from the past decade and a lot I haven't seen I would love to! I'm seeing Mob Psycho 100 top a lot of lists as well as Rakugo Shinju, Yamato 2199, Shirobako and others and I plan on watching them eventually. I feel like this is kind of mean but a notable absentee for me would be Madoka. Madoka was a very enjoyable series but I thought Kamen Rider Gaim, by the same writer, explored the themes in a much deeper and more personal way. I've seen all of these multiple times and think of them frequently though. So even if I cried the first time I watched Your Name since I haven't watched it again or thought of it a lot after I couldn't put it on the list compared to these others.
