How much further is it ahead/different? I'd like to pick it up, but would hate to have largely a repeat of the series and only get very little new stuff when im caught up. Is it updating regularly?

The story takes a different route from the show while still keeping some central elements to it, so it's hard to say how far it is - currently happening is a mix of the events of Ep 12ish and Ep 22ish, so it's definitely building up to something big there.
As for the updates - they don't follow a schedule, but new chapters come out rather frequently, with the release date of every new chapter being announced at the end of the last one. Next one is due in just under two weeks if memory serves

While the broadest brush description of the manga would be the same as about the first cour of the anime, there are many differences in detail (e.g. a role swap for Goro and Ichigo in episode 9; a completely different take on how Kokoro's partner swap happened). It's not just that, they also pulled the behind-the-scenes arc with 01 and Dr. Franxx forward to start at the same time as the 02 breakdown arc. Personally I feel like this is a much better choice, as the resolution of the character conflict is thereby pushed back by the immediate threat, avoiding some of the issues the later episodes had that erose from the now lack of character conflict between the S13 kids.
It's also in my opinion a much cleaner and more meaningful way of introducing the Klaxo Queen and makes it feel much less like an afterthought to artificially lengthen the runtime.

Ooh, okay, that makes much more sense, thanks for clarifying ^^. Also I absolutely agree on the varying quality bit - especially some of the older chapters are painfully obviously machine translations, and don't look like they've even been proofread. Even my bare minimum moonspeak skills are enough to spot that some of the phrases are just Japanese figures of speech translated 1:1

We're still at the Gran Crevasse battle, i.e. sort-of at episode 15, so with only 3 chapters left, one would hope that this means there's no real room for fitting in much of the remaining episodes. My guess would be adults all die, kids survive and breed.

I'm not 100% sure about the "the kids all survive" part. I could very much imagine them killing off one or two of them to be trademark different from the anime

Then again, I can see just about every combination of S13 kids being killed off kinda happening
EDIT: Apart from 016/002 not sharing a fate. I don't think the manga will have one of them live, and the other die - that would make for an interesting plotline in other stories, but with the overall tone and the little amount of chapters left, I don't see that happening

And I was so looking forward to being able to tell people that they should watch the show until Ep 15, then read the manga because that didn't fuck up the ending. Well, so much for that.

Now that the chapter is out in English and I've gone ahead and read it, things aren't actually looking as bleak as it might seem. There's still a chance that VIRM is just a "hey that thing happened way back when" and the final fight will just be against the Klaxo baby.

APE has gone full Seele again, but on all other fronts, things seem like they might actually turn out fine. Dr Franxx has a much more worthy demise, addressing the children and "those that once were children" to apologize for causing all of this and condemning everyone who allowed things to come this far
But by far the most interesting difference is that this time around, the Klaxo princess is in the Star entity, so I'd even go as far as say that the chances for space travel bs are close to zero now
