I've DEFINITELY noticed how it does get better. I'm at episode 21 as of writing and it's probably one of the better dubs I've definitely watched (again, not saying much since the only other anime dub I've watched are the FMA 2003 and Brotherhood dubs.) I really enjoy the actors that were chosen for the roles, Shinji's dub actor in the ADV dub, in my opinion, is WAAAAY better than the Netflix one, the Netflix one sounds a little too...girly? I guess? It makes some kind of thematic sense since Shinji is both masculine and immasculine (at least in my eyes, and I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled) in various ways, so I guess the voice is appropriate, but it's not my cup of tea.

Yeah, I change the things I'm interested in on a dime. Seriously, one day I'll be playing SMT, the next day it's VRChat, then it's just whatever I'm feeling like playing at that point. "Oh wow, you're uhhh...something that's for sure." -Anyone who meets me for the first time basically.

I think that's something one has to be careful when adapting Eva - Shinji as a character plays with the uber masculine usual shounen protagonist, he tries to become that but generally fails. However, that doesn't man he is necessarily feminine so much as un-masculine. We have several female characters in the show, namely Asuka and Misato, who act "manly", if you take that as being determined, action-oriented, and in Misato's case more calm and rational than Shinji. But those qualities are never presented as being masculine (or being overemotional as being something feminine), but instead as simply mature.

So, what I gather is that he's androgynous, high in both masculine and feminine qualities without either side over-topping the other at any particular moment. I remember hearing something of this sort from GoatJesus's Shinji Ikari Character Analysis, and I thought it was a very good point about the character because do see him as a not so manly, but not completely feminine boy. I personally like him for having mixes of both, because teenagers will exert different behaviors throughout puberty (though I've rather noticed it more through myself rather than other people, and I don't think I'm the best example to go off of.)
But yes, characters who try to act manly are punished in the show, which is why we never see really ANY of the characters (regardless of gender) go completely all out. When Shinji tries to take on Leliel in episode 16, Shinji and his pride of Misato calling him "number one" gets him punished by being sucked into the shadows by the angel and only saves himself due to synchronizing with his Mother inside of Eva-01. Shinji is NEVER seen doing this type of behavior again, most likely (at least to me) because he learned his lesson, he needs to work with other people and not try to everything on is own (rather reflective of reclusive, shut-in nature I'll say.)
I think I went a little overboard, you know what I mean. I agree here.

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
I remember seeing images from NGE pop up in various places on the internet in the late 90s. At that time, I had watched the Secret of Blue Water already and totally loved it. While I had no idea that NGE was basically the spiritual successor to that, I immediately connected to the visual style and made a mental note to check out NGE sometime. Well, about 10 years went by and I never saw it, but I never forgot about it, either. Then around 2009 I felt sick one day and decided to stay in bed all day and finally check out that anime that looked so interesting. I was immediately hooked and binge-watched all episodes that day! End of Eva followed shortly after and luckily by that time, Rebuild of Evangelion was a thing! Now I'm patiently waiting for the final installment, looking forward to see what crazyness Anno has in store for us!

Caught it on TV fifteen years ago or so. I was already heavily into anime, but little did I know that I was about to watch the greatest one. Eh, those were the times.

I was one of the white guys in a primarily Japanese dorm cluster at the University of Washington circa 2000. My new friends were eager to blow my mind with the two coolest things they knew about: Dance Dance Revolution and Evangelion.
Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
I actually watched eva back in September this year. I was so unfathomably bored with playing video games that I just started watching anime out of curiosity. I started with Anno's other show Gunbuster and then wound up watching Evangelion straight after.

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
i first heard about it when netflix released it, i'd heard of it a couple times before after it was featured in the "Mother's Basement" video what's in an intro. honestly it's changed my life ^_^
Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
So... I knew it existed ever since I was a kid (already watching too much anime so I was bound to know. also because it's THE Eva), but never got around to watching it until a few years ago. Even then I think I only watched the first few episodesー Still cursing myself for not getting into it earlier.
I was already spoiled to death about most plot points by then (including Rebuild) but I ended up giving it a proper viewing last year, and the rest is history :') worth it. And in a way, maybe the timing is good because on a personal note, I don't think I would've resonated with it so much if I did watch it way earlier.

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
It's a long story but it's also short. Here's the story
About a month ago I was watching some science fiction on the Television. I decided to see what else was on, so I went the channel that has anime on it and saw the series available to watch, so as I was bored I decided to watch it. After that the tiny stream turned into a monsoon and then I fell in "love" with a certain red haired girl, and that's what opened the flood gates.

I finished 2 days ago and have been in a deep depression since
I wish things would just work for Shinji and Asuka. They need each other, even if they won't admit it.

Are you me?!?
In your case, many people find reading some of the more well-known fan stuff like Re-Take helps a lot, emotionally. The spin-offs like Angelic Days also have that Asuka/Shinji slant but they're not very... good.

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
Well they do sort of admit it during the very last scene. The "episode" is called "I Need You" after all.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
To each their own, but I generally advise against reading Retake when the impression of the show is still fresh in your mind. It butchers a lot of characters, and I am pretty sure if I had read that right after finishing the show, it would have created enough bad associations that I probably wouldn't be here.

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

Yes, my mind is all warped and mangled!
In my case I actually read Orchestrating the Silence first, at the time. Overall I think Evangelion Genocide is the crowning achievement of Eva fics. But it is a pretty long and somewhat heavy read, but so is Ghosts of Evangelion. I think OtS might be better for you at first, it's fairly short and succinct.

Re: How did you first get into Evangelion?
Well that's technically not wrong, but using that scene as the selling point for the show (or any scene like that as the selling point of any show that isn't literal porn) sounds like some seriously skewed priorities to me

I find out about it after going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole when I was 12. I wasn't really interested with it at first until I found it was about giant monstrous biomechs. I read the articles on Wikipedia for it, barely understood any of it but I was hooked anyway. Few years later I finally watched the series and I felt really connected to it.
