So, how do you guys feel about Disney casting a black girl to play Ariel? I don't mind it as long as she's talented but a part of me wishes that they had chosen a red haired girl to play Ariel. Also, I'd love it if they got Wayne Brady to voice Sebastian. I'd love to hear him sing Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl.

I cannot be bothered to put forth the effort to opine upon any more Disney remakes, except maybe the Mulan one, and that's only because I want to compare that to the Chinese live-action movie. Like, I get that the casting is "Woke," and the negative reactions are "Broke," but Disney is getting ungodly amounts of word-of-mouth as a result, so it'll probably work out for them in the end, financially speaking.

If I watch any other Disney live-action remake, it'll probably be the 1994 Disney live-action remake of the Jungle Book, starring adult sexy Mowgli with abs.

I wonder if Disney would actually recast the role of Ariel to please the fans? I highly doubt it though.

Wouldn't that just be Tarzan, though?

The Little Mermaid was (alongside The Lion King) my favorite movie as a little child - I don't mind the casting choice. I'm wondering, if they're gonna dye her hair red for the movie? I just hope it isn't as devoid of color The Lion King Live Action seems to be.

Zero issues with the casting of Halle Bailey*. She seems charming, talented and will probably do great in the role.

I do have major issues with Disney's lazy process of remaking their classic renaissance films for an easy Billion but that's another story.

Probably won't see the film but I will laugh if they go again with photorealistic creatures because while a lion or a bear can be cute most marine life are absolutely terrifying. A photorealistic crab in a tight close up on a giant IMAX movie screen "signing" about life under the sea is a horrifying & hilarious image.

*She has a name. Not "black girl".

I haven't seen any of these live action Disney remakes and let's be honest the only one that has any chance of being good is Mulan if they make it an over the top Wuxia film but disney would be way too cowardly to do that.

Though I'm not gonna comment on the argument I did read somewhere that all of Triton's daughters are meant to represent the seven seas on earth and Ariel is the red sea so this to makes the skin colour change accurate in my view and I'm hoping the movie will do the same for the other daughters skin colours will follow through the theme. Oh and I really hope they cut of the scene where Triton trashes her stuff as that was very abusive and its what put me off the oringal movie.

The absolute cinematic masterpiece coming out in two days says otherwise.

On-topic: Knowing the inner-workings of the company, while an explanation based on the corresponding sea does work; the company I work for (while I do love with all my heart) truly doesn't give a shit about being "accurate" and are literally only doing this as a social stunt for brownie points. If that isn't the case then they sure as shit are feeding me lie after lie in all their mandatory training videos saying as much when they talk about their company goals.

^ See, that’s a nice thought and all, and I couldn’t agree more, but all it does for me is make me even more upset that I cannot be bothered to care about one more Disney remake. If anything, I’m simply gonna get mad that something that could mean so much to so many people is just gonna end up falling as flat as the literally foolish gay stuff Beauty & the Beast. (LeFou? “The Fool.” Fucking really?)

This is a live action remake that I'm looking forward but I don't like how Disney decided to blackwash Ariel just to make a fucking political statement. -_- I'm by no means racist, I now have a black sister-in-law who's very nice. I get that Halle Bailey is talented and all and that she even got Jodi Benson's blessing to play Ariel, but part of me wishes that they'd recast Ariel but I highly doubt it'll happen. Having Ariel be black would be like if they did a live action Princess and the Frog and they made Tiana white. Then again, the movie Black Panther made a racist joke about white people and no one batted an eye. But, then again the 007 codename is going to a black girl in the new James Bond movie and Thor is gonna be a female too. Yay diversity! Lol I bet the part in Under the Sea about the blackfish is gonna get changed. In the original sequence a fish that looks like it's wearing blackface appears on screen for a split second. I'm still gonna see the movie regardless, but I'm gonna hold my tongue on how I feel about black Ariel til they release a trailer. Personally I'd rather see a live action Tangled or Frozen instead. Or I'd rather wanna see Disney adapt the The Princess and the Pea and Rumpelstiltskin as animated films. Anyhow, my rant is over. It felt good to get that out of my system.

I won't bother to see it either. I just like a good shutdown of nerds complaining that someone made a kids movie out of their jerkoff material.

Why is the current trend in movies and TV these days to blackwash redheaded characters? :/

From what I remember, redheaded Ariel wasn't original to the Hans Christian Anderson tale either. They forced their perceived "diversity" into that story by making Ariel a redhead in that film too. (And it was weird that this was considered diversity, but whatever.) Seeing as how dark-skinned Ariel isn't original to the original Hans Christian Anderson tale either, I care about this change just as much as I did the original change, which is to say I have no real feelings about it one way or the other.

If anything, I can almost guarantee you that the 90's animated film will be a whole lot more memorable than the live-action remake, so redheads got that going for them. 10 years from now nobody will really care one way or the other about most of these live-action Disney remakes, so I don't see a lot of cause for alarm or celebration either way.

Watch The Lure instead. That movie is everything I ever wanted in a live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid.

So I watched The Little Mermaid live earlier this month and here my thoughts on it. All it was them showing the movie but having celebrities doing the singing parts. I wish it was more of a musical instead. I didn't really care for the rapper Shaggy as Sebastian. He didn't even have a Jamaican accent and when you think of Sebastian he's supposed to be a Jamaican crab. I wish that they had made him wear a crab suit. Queen Latifah did a good job as Ursula and John Stamos was hilarious as Chef Louis. John Stamos even flubbed one of his lines saying Prince Albert instead of Prince Eric. XD They were also some singing bits that weren't in the original movie but I suspect that they were from the original broadway run of The Little Mermaid. Also, I could've sworn that they got Wayne Brady to play the live action version of Grimm in Fathoms Below, but I'm not 100% sure if it was him or not so feel to correct me if I'm wrong. All in all it was fun to watch.
