Yeah. You read right. This is for everything that doesn't have anything to do with Eva.

I must admit, I don't really know how to start this. Usually with this sort of thread (which I've been doing for a couple of years now), I tend to give some kind of brief summary about the year and how it's been, but I don't think I'm qualified to do that for 2018. I've been very much out of the loop for a lot of things that have been going on this year; sometimes by circumstances, other times by choice; so I'd rather not try to echo the general consensus (the only opinion I've heard is that it was a long year, and I thought it went rather quickly).

However, I still want to do a thread where you talk about good things that happened to you, your family and friends, in the media you enjoy, or anything else. It's always nice to remind yourself of good things, and to remember that they exist in any situation. Like with last year, I will request that you don't be snarky about it; if you have nothing good to say, then don't reply.

With that in mind, I'll start with a smattering of various things that happened to me:

-Just today, I got a PS2 second-hand from the local CeX. My last PS2 kicked the bucket in early 2017, and I'm so glad to finally have the chance to play through a whole smattering of games I've missed playing, along with any new ones I might come across. Even better is that I've finally managed to pick up a copy of Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, a game I've been craving to find and play ever since I first played a demo of it back in 2008 (yes, seriously). It was an early-PS2 game that didn't sell very well, so I'm not exaggerating when I say that tonight was the first time I'd ever seen a physical copy of it. I'll need to play more before I can say anything, but it makes me so goddamn happy to finally be able to play it.

-I was able to organize a collaborative Christmas album with various people on the internet, called A Present from Us to You. (And to anyone visiting that thread, I do plan on updating it to give a link to this album and some extra info. I'm sorry about that, but I've been tired the last couple of days.) It's really cool that I managed to pull something like that off, and that the people who joined in were able to contribute with some great songs (and a freakin' music video with Muppet-style puppets!). Hopefully, I'll try to organize something like that again for next year, because it was a lot of fun and I'd love to improve on a couple of my own mistakes.

-I've continued writing reviews for Hardcore Gaming 101 under the accidental pseudonym of Apollo Chungus (and before you ask, I went under that name long before the Big Chungus meme came into being). Among other things, I got the chance to write a positive review for (the fairly underrated) Sonic 3D Blast: Flickies' Island, and I've written reviews for nearly every Sonic game released for the Master System/Game Gear (they're not up yet, but hopefully will be in the new year). However, an unexpected surprise was getting one of my reviews published in one of the website's books. Yep, with my review for Bio Senshi Dan being included as a part of the NES Cult Classics book, I'm now technically a published writer. That's insane to think something I've written has been printed to read in an actual book, but it's also incredible at the same time!

-I've completed the first year of my Music course in a local college. I now know how to read and write sheet music at a Grade 4 level, I can play piano at an elementary level, and one particular achievement was getting seriously involved in the production of a stage play. I co-wrote the play, served as the lighting person, helped the sound person for playing certain sound cues/effects, composed a couple of generic music tracks for a party scene, acted as an off-screen voice, and gathered various props that we needed. I hadn't expected to do so much, and it did get quite stressful every now and again, but I was able to pull it off and I'm happy to have learnt various things I might not have thought I'd want to know.

-This won't be such a big block of text, but I drew four frames for a rotoscoped sequence in the insane but endearing Platypus Duck Reanimate (1:43 to 1:49) run by the similarly crazy but awesome World Animation Discord community. I got to learn how to use Paint.net and it was just really fun to influence some of the sillier things featured in the short.

-On that note, I joined a new online community in the World Animation Discord this year. I made a few new acquaintances, bumped into folks I knew from other forums who I hadn't talked to in ages, and had a mix of interesting discussions and silly jokes with all kinds of people. I sometimes got carried away with those jokes, but being able to feel like part of a new community was something that I felt I needed on days when I got somewhat lonely or overwhelmed by stuff, and I really appreciate every member of that community for making me smile with a fascinating observation, a surprising recommendation, or even just an amusingly weird video/image they stumbled across.

---

Maybe I'll write about more good things later on (cuz there was plenty that happened, but I kinda forgot while writing this post and it's plenty long as is). For now, I'll leave the rest to y'all. I hope you're doing well, and that whatever goes on, you'll have a better 2019. Thank you for reading, and Happy New Year!

For me, it's been a relaxing year of NEETdom, where I've managed to check off a whole bunch of unglamorous ToDo-list items around the house that I'd been living with/working around (scrubbing the bathroom floor, properly unclogging the kitchen sink, upgrading the central heating controller to one with an RF thermostat), keeping the garden well weeded, expanded the range of furthest points from home in a day's cycling (even though each sixty-odd mile ride still fitted within a 20-mile radius of home, country lanes being what they are), and writing more and more useful code than I'd managed for the last few years at work -- from a vanity project with its first MVP release on New Year's Day, it's gone from nothing to almost 200 stars ("likes") on GitHub and over 55,000 NuGet downloads of the main package alone.

I prefer the latter. It's a nice excuse to say "I got it from the Cex shop".

Started playing "VR Chat" this year, which has been an interesting and positive experience. Besides allowing me- a British man living in Poland- to converse with other English-speakers on a regular basis again, it also helped me become a more confident speaker and judging by people's reactions- it turns out I'm not too bad at karaoke either.

This may be mean spirited- but on the career side of things an annoying co-worker of mine left the company this year, which not only gave me great schadenfreude but had the added benefit of cementing my position as the most reliable person in my department.

I've largely stopped playing World of Tanks and completely stopped spending money on it, which both frees up quite a bit of extra cash and enables me to actually play other games now that I'm not playing that endless grindfest. I'm seriously considering uninstalling now, because the game just isn't fun anymore and the devs are dragging it down with their "new direction". Plus, there's now an offline tank game on PS4 (GuP Dream Tank Match) to play instead, and it is ironically now more historically accurate than WoT.

I got a Nintendo Switch this fall due to all the great games coming out for it. I still think it's a needlessly complex and underpowered system for the price, and the inability to charge the joycons without directly connecting them to the tablet is a serious design flaw, but at least the games are fun and it's getting a lot of third-party support.

Although Sony now has a new policy of censoring all ecchi games and VNs coming out on the PS4, The Nintendo Switch of all consoles is getting the uncensored versions of many of them (still no AO content like PC, but it's a hell of a lot better than the PS4 versions).

Console developers appear to finally be doing something I've been wanting for years, according to rumors: releasing a standard and a high-end version of their console at the same time. Microsoft is apparently doing this with Project Scarlet (their next XBox), hopefully Sony and Nintendo will do this as well.

I've started working on the basic lore for that new IP I came up with a few months ago. It's pretty fun, I should be done with the lore and ready to start writing the first book by the end of 2019.

As much as I'd love to indulge my perverse sense of humour and call it the Cex shop, it would get rather confusing since there's an actual sex shop in town (near the bus station of all places!). I just pronounce it by calling out the letters, so "See Eee Ex". It's not the most phonetically pleasing name, but it does the job well enough.

- Dad has been abnormally nice the last few weeks minus some tiny insults in the last 3 days towards my mom. :um:

- Finished HBO's Chernobyl and it's probably my 2nd favorite TV show ever.

- Aunts finally holding down a good job after years and years of not being able to do so. Sadly she is going to have to move soon because her landlord died but the Job should remain. I just hope the place she moves will allow Dogs (she just got one a few weeks back and is really happy with it)

- Watched a bunch of TV shows in April. Like 44 episodes. 11 with my mom (west wing).

- My dog isn't falling virtually at all this year. For a few months last year she was falling/slipping on our wood floor several times a day, it started completely out of nowhere.

Something that's different from last year: I live in the northern armpit of the EU, but even here a steady trickle of electric vehicles has started to appear: Kias, Hyundais, Toyota hybrids, Nissan vans, BMW i3s, and yes, some Teslas as well. It's heartening to see, considering how few models are still available at the moment.

It's stupid in terms of "little things", but I'm honestly relieved we got proper news about FFVIIR's release date (I'll happily preorder all the Deluxe Editions, but I hope it's a 3 part game series at most) and Eva on Netflix. Despite all the fan bitching, both series are important to me so I couldn't be happier ^_^ Besides, RL has such stresses lately that it's nice I can focus on something in my downtime to mentally chill out.

I signed up for my final college classes recently, have two trips planned to LA (to see The Cure) and Rhode Island (to see family/friends). I just bought the BD set of Space Runaway Ideon too, which I haven't watched in full. Very stoked for that.

I started going back to school to get my MBA. It's really tough but I'm glad I'm doing it! Plus I've always felt like I was making poor use of my time and not bettering myself now but going to work, school and then the gym I think everyone agrees I'm actually being productive!

That's great; I really need to get back into the gym-life myself; I've gained some pounds...
2019 was a great year, career-wise but my personal life suffered a lot because of it. I just recently used my time to catch up with some friends though, so everything will be fine, I guess.

New year (new decade!) new things to be positive about :D

It's on the nerdy scale, but: getting FFVII Remake in March alongside Shin Eva in June: I've waited years for both, so I'm incredibly excited how both stories will end up (for good and bad) ^_^

I've been keeping up with the gym and classes! Something silly I would do at the gym is look up the official weight of anime characters and see if I could bench press them. I'm going to need to start doubling up on some of the lighter ones since I'm surpassing even the bigger ones at this point, hee hee.

Today CPA Canada (Chartered Professional Accountants) published the results of the CFE, which is the giant 3-day final exam for people to obtain their designation/license - and I passed!!! This was my 2nd attempt (out of 3 total per lifetime) and the last year was full of depression, intense heart pain due to anxiety, and complete lack of self confidence in myself. I even had suicidal thoughts if I failed it again. But I'm now even more confident in my hard work, it truly pays off to be dedicated, persistent, and have faith. Anyone can do what they want, just set goals for yourself and always work towards them. Now excuse me, I shall proceed to do backflips since today is the happiest day of my life in the last few years!

Woah Congratulations!!!! The whole reason I'm going back to school to get my Masters is to get my CPA too! (I didn't graduate with enough credits to meet the requirements despite getting my bachelors) I know it's super tough and I'm really scared too but thanks for giving me some nice inspiration as well! It helps I can take a CPA review course for an elective to get my Master's hee hee
