Well, don't forget the special features. Those might make it long enough.

In addition, the special features for Rebuild ought to be a LOT better than what they were for D&R and EoE... a director's commentary by Hideaki Anno would be great.

But by the time all 4 movies have been translated and dubbed, HD-DVD/Blu-Ray should be a lot more common than they are now. Although it would also depend on the format that whoever gets the license receives the movies in.

I fail to see how special features can replace actual content of a movie...

The subtitle for this message is "Hopes and Expectations That Shall Go Forever Unfulfilled."

With HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, one of the big draws, as far as special features goes, is a commentary track that places side-by-side with the film visually and audibly. So when you're watching Titanic you can watch James Cameron's smug look and listen to him ramble on about whatever. In a perfect world, they would apply this kind of technology to anime releases as well, what I mean to say is, a domestic HD/Blu release of Rebuild that could play the film as well as leave a lower portion of the screen black, a la letterboxing, to have subtitles for a native language commentary while retaining the superior quality of the animation.

Another great aspect to use (read: abuse) this ability would be to have a split screen type presentation where at certain points, you could highlight and choose things on screen to display information about it in the unused area, such as highlighting and clicking Misato would give a bio about her "on the fly" and choosing certain things would reveal their symbolism, what the abbreviation stands for, etc.

It would also be really interesting for certain scenes that are, more or less, updated versions of the originals and play them side-by-side, like watching the buildings "grow" in the original 1996 Eva compared to watching them in Rebuild to see just how far technology (and budget costs) have come.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree! Movies like Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet are already being released on Blu-ray in Japan and Evangelion is much, much more popular than those two! Gainax have also released their own Wings of Honneamise on Blu-ray too, so it's pretty much a given that Eva will show on Blu-ray - maybe even from day one of it's release on physical media!

As for HD-DVD, I wouldn't bet on it! Blu-ray is trouncing HD-DVD in Japan at the moment.

Regardless, trends in Japan won't affect the media it's released on in America, that's up to the market trend in the States and the decision of the domestic publisher.

I think it will. It's usually the case that Japanese publishers want to keep as much rights to the movie as they can, and they are notoriously traditional, so I can't see them allowing their product on HD-DVD when it won't sell in Japan on that media.

I dunno... Team Ninja sold themselves to Microsoft a few days ago. The Japanese love the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden game series, but now those will only ever appear on Xbox 360. It's not an accepted format in Japan. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the publisher has some pull on the format of release. It doesn't matter how much Michael Bay wants Transformers to release on both HD and Blu-Ray, the domestic publisher makes the final call, right? Films release on VCD in other countries where the format is almost non-existant in America.

Not trying to sound like a jerk or anything. Mainly just trying to stop myself from getting bummed out (read: buying a Blu-Ray Player) since I only go HD-DVD.

Personally I would bet it's going to be put on HD-DVD. Apparently the porn industry isn't being welcomed by the Blu-Ray people so all porn is going to be cumming out on the HD-DVD format. This may sound like a joke post but you would be surprised how prominent a player the porn industry was in the old VHS/Beta wars. Plus Universal, Warner, Paramount, HBO, New Line Cinema are mainly going with HD-DVD and both Disney and Fox are waivering on their Blu-Ray only desicions already.

For the US release, Honneamise, which is Bandai Visual's US anime company (don't ask me what that makes Bandai entertainment, I don't know) have released the movie on BOTH HD-DVD/DVD format, and Blu-Ray/DVD format.

this is not entirely unique to hd-dvd or blu-ray. I have the extended version of the Lord of the Rings movies, each movie is about three and a half hours long, with at least 5 different audio tracks. Granted this is on 2 dvd's, with nearly 2 hours of video on each.
God, Apparently you all have been discussing Q since November. Catching up on the discussion is harrowing.

Video commentary playing alongside a feature? That's pretty impressive for a DVD release. I didn't even think it could be done without losing crazy amounts of quality.

The ultimate Japanese/US release version of Eva will have this or else it's made of fail! Mwahahaha!

All the stuff included in that 2007 Japanese release, all 4 Rebuild movies, all 13 volumes of the Manga, AND S2 Works, Vocal Soundtracks like Decade, Rebuild OSTs, Every single version of Fly Me to the Moon ever used all on ONE CD, as well as life-size nude blow-up dolls of Misato, Rei and Asuka along with Shinji, Kaworu and Kaji (all the dolls talk and come with the "Gainax Bounce" ;)) for the fapboys and girls, and of course posters of Anno and Sadamoto you can beat up on when stressed.

Oh! Oh! And the case is covered in pure gold and silver, and it's jewel-encrusted with diamonds!

Of course, it'll be released on regular DVD, Blu-ray, HD and whatever else is around nowadays.

And it's Super Duper Limited Edition that costs....One Million Dollars!

Oh, and the year after that, the EXACT same thing would be released, except this time it'd include every single Eva video game ever released, too! ^_^
